The Best Classes to Take at Hogwarts

Posted by Shara

Hogwarts offers an impressive course list. Here’s a quick guide to what we think are the most impressive of the selection!

1. Transfiguration - In this class taught by Professor McGonagall, students learn how to transform or change the appearance of just about anything. One of Harry, Ron and Hermione’s first exams was to change a mouse into a matchbox! While it seems a bit difficult --- most students find it tricky at first --- it could prove very useful later, and so much fun!

2. Charms - We think this could be argued to be one of the most important classes at Hogwarts. How many times had Hermione, Harry and Ron used a simple charm to get them out of a little pickle? In this class, Professor Flitwick teaches his students varying types of charms and spells. Unlike something like Potions or History of Magic, this class requires a lot of wand-waving and practice, something that helps pass the time. And who could forget the swish and flick charm, Winggardium Leviosa?  Wouldn’t that be useful to know?

3. Care of Magical Creatures - Who wouldn’t want the chance to fly on a hippogriff? This class, mostly taught by Hagrid, allows students to meet and learn how to care for all kinds of intriguing (and sometimes scary) creatures in the wizarding world. Just make sure you follow directions! You don’t want to end up under Madam Pomfrey’s care in the Hospital Wing.

4. Flying Lessons - As first years, all Hogwarts students are required to learn the basics of a broomstick with Professor Hooch. Most students are already semi-proficient, but for those of us muggleborns without broomsticks at home, this could be the best class ever.

5. Defense Against the Dark Arts - This class, taught by an assortment of teachers, helps students learn protections against the Dark Arts. You may be better off staying far away from this class depending on what teacher you have, but it's important to learn to defend yourself when there are dark wizards lurking about! Plus, if you have Professor Lupin, you might even have fun!
