Harry and his friends use a lot of different spells throughout the series. Which are the most useful? Below are some of the trio’s favorite spells to use, along with their definitions.
Accio: The Summoning Charm. Harry uses it to summon his broom in the Triwizard Tournament.
Alohomora: Want to open a locked door? Use this spell to enter any room.
Lumos: Whenever Harry, Hermione, or Ron need some light, they use Lumos to light up their wands like flashlights.
Expecto Patronum: It’s definitely important to master this spell if you’ve got pesky dementors lurking around --- evil creatures who feed on human happiness, spread despair and, if they kiss you, will suck out your soul. Done correctly, the spell takes the form of an animal and defends you from the dementors. Harry’s patronus is a stag.
Expelliarmus: Used to disarm an opponent. This spell causes a wand to go flying out of a person’s hand.
Nox: When it’s time to turn the light off, Nox is the word to use.
Petrificus Totalus: This spell temporarily binds a victim’s body. Hermione uses it against Neville when he catches them sneaking out of the common room at night.
Reparo: Need something fixed? Use this spell to repair what’s been broken.
Riddikulus: If you’ve got a Boggart in your closet, use Riddikulus to to change its shape from your deepest fear into something funny. For example, Neville's boggart is Professor Snape, so when he casts Riddikulus, the boggart suddenly looks like Snape dressed in Neville's grandmother's clothes.
Silencio: Do you have a sibling who never stops talking? Use this spell to silence them immediately.
Stupefy: This spell knocks an enemy unconscious. It’s one of Harry’s go-to combat spells.
Wingardium Leviosa: The levitating spell. Ron uses this on the club of a mountain troll, then accidentally clonks the troll on the head with it.
