Teen Board: Trying a Different Genre

By Kate F.

For those of you who don’t know me, I am a huge fan of any novel that has action, adventure and/or fantasy. Those three genres are always what determines what books I buy and read. Now it has occurred to me that maybe I should venture out and try some different genres. Maybe I’d like the different genre just as much as I like the action/adventure/fantasy novels. However, I’ve always pushed that thought aside. I’ve read some novels out of my normal genre…and I never truly enjoyed them. I love the thrill of adventure and action, the whimsical feel of reading a fantasy novel.  To be quite honest, I’ve never read another novel that had such thrill, until last night, that is.

Last night I picked up ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS by Stephanie Perkins and I couldn’t put it down! I’ve never read a realistic fiction novel I love as much as I did this one. I was immediately charmed by Etienne, and found I could easily relate to Anna. Even though this novel did not have the same traits as the novels I normally love did, it still gave me a thrill while reading. I realized that instead of action adventure and fantasy, this novel had brilliant characters, hilarious dialogue and a quick pace.

Overall, the moral of my story is not to write off a genre because you read one book that you didn’t like. That’s what I did, and now I’m regretting it! If you normally only read realistic fiction, try some action for a change. If you love mysteries, pick up an adventure novel. Or, if you’re like me and tend to read fantasy novels, find a realistic fiction novel that sounds appealing (I personally think you should read ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS). Even if you don’t love the novel, you’ll have tried a new genre!
