Teen Board: Problems of a Teenage Bookworm

By Kate F.

Have you ever felt like other people don’t understand your passion for reading? I know I have! Here are some of the most common problems I come across while reading.

1. You’re at an amazing, suspenseful part in one of your favorite books when someone interrupts you because you have to do chores, go to class, do homework etc.

This happens to me all the time! The worst time this has ever happened to me, however, was when I was reading THE ELITE by Keira Cass. I was at such a suspenseful part (I actually thought someone was going to get shot on the next page) when I had to go to school. Not only that, but at my school, no electronic devices are allowed, even e-readers. I had to wait a whole six hours to get my book back and start reading. Thankfully, no one got shot, but I think it is safe to say that that was one of the most suspenseful days of my life.

2. You’re comfortably reading inside when your parents tell you that you need to go outside and be active.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for physical activity. Just not when I’m reading. My normal response is to go outside and soak up some Vitamin D while reading…but sometimes even that fails. I’ve got no tips on how to get out of this one. Sorry guys!

3. You’re friends think you’re slightly crazy due to your obsession with books.

Let’s face it, this happens to almost every teenage bookworm. You’re super excited about this book you’ve just read…but none of your friends seem to care. I experience this all the time, but no worries! There’s always that one friend who has read and enjoyed the same book as you! You just have to find that person. For me, that person is my sister.

4. You get to the end of a brilliant novel….and realize you have to wait a whole year for the sequel.

I believe this is a problem all bookworms encounter, no matter what age. I found this especially true when finishing Lauren Oliver’s PANDEMONIUM (now that ending was just cruel!). Sadly, there’s simply nothing to do about this issue. While you’re waiting for this sequel, find another book you love. It’s also a good idea to see if that author has any plans to publish a short novella before the sequels release date (A DAWN MOST WICKED anybody?).

I hope some of these help you conquer your bookworm problems! What other problems do you come across regarding books/reading. Let us know in the comments below!
