Teen Board Blog: Classic Retellings

By Kate F.

Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of young adult books that are based off of classic tales. I love these types of books for so many different reasons, but the biggest reason is that many of the authors who write these books choose to add a dark, sinister twist to these old classics. Not only does this add some excitement to these books, it is also bound to thrill teen readers across the country! Below are examples of some of the books I love…and ones I think you’ll love too!

THE MADMAN'S DAUGHTER by Megan Shepherd was just released in January and already both teen and adult readers have been fawning over this book on Goodreads. THE MADMAN'S DAUGHTER was inspired by THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU by H.G. Wells, but I doubt H.G. Wells’s classic had as great of a romance as Megan Shepherd has created! This book also has a gruesome side, as well. After reading this novel, I’m interested in reading H.G. Wells’s version!

SPLINTERED, the much-anticipated novel by A.G. Howard, is a new take on the classic ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND by Lewis Carroll. But the Wonderland in SPLINTERED is far darker than the one found in the original story! Combined with a killer romance and a unique protagonist, this story will immediately capture your imagination.

SCARLET is the second novel in The Lunar Chronicles series. The first book, CINDER, begins with the tale of Cinderella, but Cinder is not like the fair-haired, flawless girl all of us know. In Marissa Meyer’s version, Cinder is both a mechanic and a cyborg! In SCARLET, Cinder’s story is continued but another character is introduced, as well. Unlike the classic Little Red Riding Hood, Scarlet is fierce and determined. Both heroines are complex characters, and I actually found myself preferring them over the originals.

I’ve told you my opinion on these books, what’s yours? Let me know if you like or dislike the retelling of classic stories and why.
