Meet Kathie Moore, Mother of Author Rachel Hawkins

Posted by Anonymous

Did you read to your daughter as a child? What did you read?

I read to her all the time! When she was about a year old, she had a book called MY PUPPY that we must have read to her 20 times a day.  Other than that, she always really loved fairy tales, so we read a lot of those, too!

Five or six. Before that, she used to take books and pretend to read them, making up stories to go with the pictures. I guess I should've known then that she'd be a writer someday!

Did your child have a favorite series/author growing up?

She was crazy for Roald Dahl books, and I'm pretty sure she read all the Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley High books!

Did you have any book or reading rituals in your house? (Examples would be: Going to the library or bookstore together, talking about the books you have read, sharing books, storytime)

We enrolled her in the library's summer reading program ever year, and we always made trips to the bookstore. Books were a big part of our house!

When did you know your daughter was going to be a writer?

I think I've always known! She's been making up stories pretty much her whole life!

Can you remember your daughter writing as a child?

Oh, yes! In fact, I still have several of her first stories! She wrote a "book" in kindergarten called SKYTWISTER that has a place of honor on my bookshelf!

Do you read advance copies of your daughter’s work?

I did for HEX HALL, but she hasn't let me read the second one yet, which just seems very unfair!

Do you have a favorite of your daughter’s books?

So far, HEX HALL is the only one I've read (well, except for SKYTWISTER!) Hard to choose between those two! :)

What kinds of books do you enjoy reading?

I've always liked mysteries and romantic suspense.

What authors, besides your daughter’s books, do you read?

I used to love Anne Rice, and I enjoy Sandra Brown and Nora Roberts. I also just finished Irene Latham's LEAVING GEE’S BEND, which I thought was great!

Rachel Hawkins is the author of the Young Adult bestseller HEX HALL, which is in stores now.
