Readers’ Thoughts on Khaled Hosseini’s Classics

In anticipation of publication of AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED by Khaled Hosseini (pub date: May 21, 2013) we asked readers to share their comments about his first two books THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. Here is what they had to say.

Christine from Lawton, OK
Khaled Hosseini covers 33 years of turbulence through uprisings in Afghanistan in A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS.  He follows the lives of two women - Mariam and Laila - and shows how they are affected by war and the customs of Afghanistan. The language is so vivid that one can actually picture in their mind as to what is happening in the story. The emotions that are evoked range from gut-wrenching to heartache to pure joy as the reader sees the intertwining of the lives of these two women in their struggle to survive during these years. At times their story brought me to tears.  I highly recommend this book as a "must read." The author makes one feel like they are actually there and living the moments in the lives of Mariam and Laila.

Peggy from Merrick, NY
THE KITE RUNNER was an immersion in the culture that was riveting to the end.  And I had hoped for a sequel for years.

A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was even more emotionally thought-provoking to our female reading group. We discussed what freedoms most of us take for granted, even our personal freedom to be ourselves. I am looking forward to the new book. I have great expectations of this author!

Christine from Elverta, CA
THE KITE RUNNER easily is one of the best books I've ever read. Not only is it beautifully written, but the tale is an important one. Five stars! Looking forward to AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED!

Krystyna from Milton, MA
I read THE KITE RUNNER when it was first published.  I could not put the book down as I was so captivated by the story.  Hosseini leaves the reader with such vivid pictures of his land. This was such a well-written book and I am looking forward to reading AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED.

Barbara from Egg Harbor Township, NJ
I thoroughly enjoyed both THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS.  Having had the opportunity to have lived in a Muslim country, they validated some of my experiences and observations about the people, culture, and way of life that is different from life in America and the freedoms we take for granted. I also appreciated the fact that the basic desires for love, respect, understanding, and security transcend time and cultures.

Emily from Edmond, OK
I loved both books. I found them both eye opening to Afghan culture and life. I look forward to reading Hosseini's next book.

Mary Sue from Tucson, AZ
Loved both of them!

James from Goleta, CA
Monumental novels!

Diane from Cedar Rapids, IA
Moving tale that stays with you long after you have finished it.

Betty from Warner Robins, GA
THE KITE RUNNER was a wonderfully descriptive story of the friendship of two boys. It was sensitive and heart-breaking. Hard to believe this was written by a man. For a debut novel, I wondered how he could ever beat it. Along came A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS with the story of two women and their horrible lives in Afghanistan. How this author was able to understand the thoughts and feelings of the women was just amazing. The second book outdid the first! I loved them both! I have been watching for the release of a third book and am so excited that it is almost here.

Rhonda from Riverside, CA
I loved both books. The writing was beautiful, no matter how sad or harsh the story, the words kept me turning the pages.

Ilene from Naperville, IL
Two great books, with really likable characters, that takes us into a country I knew little about.

Libby from Lake Ariel, PA
I thoroughly enjoyed both earlier books and am looking forward to this new book.  We reviewed both books at our local reading club and most of us agreed that while both were highly enjoyable, THE KITE RUNNER won out as the better of the two.

Deborah from Apple Valley, MN
Really enjoyed the story in THE KITE RUNNER.

Diana from Staten Island, FL
Both of these books were wonderful. They emphasized a culture that was not widely known to most Americans. The characters were very well drawn and made us care about them deeply.

Amanda from Langley, WA
I read both and what a wakeup call that was! I always shied away from Middle Eastern settings in books, but these were recommended, and were excellent! I felt humbled and so extremely fortunate to have grown up in a country where women are valued, and freedom is taken for granted. Khaled Hosseini has definitely opened my eyes about the other side of the world, and I'm forever a fan of his.

Wendy from Potomac, MD
Both books were incredible.  I couldn't put THE KITE RUNNER down and felt it would be difficult to write a more intriguing book than that.  However, A THOUSAND SPLENDID almost outdid it. Hosseini is a magical storyteller.

Vanessa from Highlands Ranch, CO
THE KITE RUNNER was a moving story of friendship and bravery in Afghanistan.  A THOUSAND SPLENDID A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was even more touching, a powerful epic of the connections between women and I still remember Mariamso many years later. Hosseini's style is poignant, poetic, and ultimately triumphant.  I look forward to reading his new work AND THE MOUTAINS ECHOED.

Cindy from Lees Summit, MO
Loved them both. Both books had fabulous imagery and character development. Hosseini can take a sad story and make it so uplifting.

Tina from Denver, IA
THE KITE RUNNER continues to be one of my favorite books I have ever read.  A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was just as good, but perhaps the bar was set higher because of the success of THE KITE RUNNER and it was harder to live up to my expectations.  Both of these books are ones I continue to recommend to friends, and it is obvious that Hosseini is a gifted writer.

Deanna from Perrysburg, OH
I have read both and enjoyed the characters and the plots of both. I especially liked A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS and reading about the complex relationships of the women and their bonds with each other.

Tressa from South Jordan, UT
I really enjoyed A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS --- loved the setting, and learning a little more about the struggles of women in Afghanistan.  I like stories that can show the dark side and yet show the hope and struggles that characters have and how they are better for having the hope.

Marge from Silver Spring, MD
Both were excellent books and "must reads."  I learned a lot about life in Pakistan and Afghanistan and how the lives of people are changed by government and religious factors. The author grips us with his excellent plots and characterization.

Marsha from Woodland, CA
THE KITE RUNNER is one of the best books I've ever read. Two of my book clubs read it and loved it. A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was not as well received.

Shel from Englewood, CO
The story tries to show cultural differences between fathers and son in Afghanistan and the US, but proves that in the end we're not that different.

Susan from Willits, CA
These books changed my life. I did not realize the struggles that women endured. I suppose I even questioned women in that position before I realized how insidious the culture was. It opened my eyes. I had the pleasure of giving THE KITE RUNNER away for World Book Night and had many women tell me how it impacted their lives. It was a true pleasure. I have heard Dr. Hosseini speak twice on his books and even was introduced to his lovely wife. He makes a wonderful impact in person.

Kaye from Las Animas, CO
Our reading club read THE KITE RUNNER --- most didn't like what happened, but thought it was worth reading. Two other members and I read A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS and had an excellent discussion about which book was better.

S from New Milford, CT
THE KITE RUNNER gives great insight to the Afghan culture.

Joy from Huntington Beach, CA
Both of these books were very accurate on what conditions were like then and now in Afghanistan and for people now living in this country. They held your attention from beginning to end.

Debra from Amarillo, TX
I have read both books and loved them. They are eye openers. I never knew about a lot that was presented in these books.

Barbara from Arlington, VA
THE KITE RUNNER was a tug-at-the-heart read. This is a story of two boys, one the son of the rich father, and one his servant's son.  It shows class distinctions, honor and dishonor, the rich and the poor and the acceptance of injustice as a way of life in this culture so much different from our own.  If you haven't yet read this book, I suggest doing so.

John from Augusta, GA
After reading and loving THE KITE RUNNER, I was hesitant to read A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS fearing that it would not be as good as the first. A letdown I have often experienced with a sophomore release. However, the second novel was equally as engaging.

Michelle from East Syracuse, NY
My book club read both of these books a few years ago.  We loved THE KITE RUNNER because it was one of the first books to reveal the history of that era and that part of the world in a heart-wrenching novel.  We gladly picked Mr. Hosseini's second novel and were not let down.  This time, from a female perspective he revealed the brutality of that world and made us cry, profusely.  But both of his works gave us hope in the end and I am looking forward to taking that journey of a lifetime with Mr. Hosseini in this new book.

Tara from Burtonsville, MD
I loved both books. A perspective on a country and people we see and hear about but don't really know.  The books spur amazing dialogue and remind you why we are so lucky to live in this country.

Suzanne from Waynesboro, PA
I really enjoyed THE KITE RUNNER. The relationships felt real, my emotions were piqued and I learned something, which always makes me feel like the reading I did instead of cleaning the house was quite worth it!

Jan from Roeland Park, KS
I read both of those books within a week of their being published. THE KITE RUNNER was one of our book club’s choices. We all loved it. Hosseini is a wonderful author.  It is very difficult for me to say which book I loved more, but I think it might be A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS-- but just a tiny bit more!

Dale from Westminster, MA
I enjoyed both THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS and am so glad Khaled decided to embrace us with another novel. Even though both of his previous novels were great, being a woman I enjoyed reading A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS more because was it about the women in Afghanistan and the abuse they endured. It makes you say we are so privileged to live in America. My heart just aches for so many of the people in this world.

Lillian from Orlando, FL
I have read THE KITE RUNNER. The book is a masterpiece, well-written and heart-wrenching.

Joan from Niagara Falls, Ontario
Loved both of these books. I enjoy reading about other cultures and his writing style is very unique.

Paige from Montgomery Village, MD
I have read both of these books - twice in fact. I consider them two of the most beautifully written books I have read. I think A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS spoke to me a bit more as it was more a story of women. He is a great writer and I am anxious to read his newest addition to great books.

Kathy from Flower Mound, TX
I read THE KITE RUNNER with my book club and it is one of those books that you can't put down.  It was my first introduction to what life was like in Afghanistan told from the perspective of a boy and his best friend. You'll be thinking about this story long after you finish reading it.

Judith from Raleigh, NC
I loved both of these books and since my son has been in Afghanistan for 3 years I have a real desire to learn all I can about the people of the country.

Trudi from Tomball, TX
I liked THE KITE RUNNER best. Went to see the movie. I enjoyed learning about Afghanistan, which I knew little about. The book was well-written and it was a page turner. The descriptive words were also wonderful. I couldn't put it down, and felt such sympathy for the characters.

Cheryl from Titusville, FL
One of those eye-opening reads that lets me peek into other cultures and the way we (Americans) react to the differences in others. Loved reading them!!!

Carla from Saint Louis, MO
I loved both THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. To me, they are in my top 10 favorite books. I have been anxiously awaiting another book by Hosseini! I loved the understanding and exquisite writing about children in the first book, and the expertise he wrote with about women in his second book. My husband, who is normally not a fiction reader, read both of these and loved them. I actually don't know ONE woman who has not read these two books.

Melanie from Laurel Hollow, NY
I have read both of these titles, but THE KITE RUNNER ranks among the best books I've ever read. I have recommended it to many people, all who thought it, was amazing. I was lucky enough, as a World Book Night book giver last year, to be given 20 copies of THE KITE RUNNER to give away to light or non-readers.

It was a wonderful experience to share such a special book with people who either aren't readers or who only read mass-produced popular fiction. I just gave my personal copy of A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS to one of my World Book Night recipients. Sometimes you just have to read the right book to realize you really do like reading. THE KITE RUNNER has enabled me to share my love of reading to others.

Jeanette from Cheboygan, MI
I loved them both, but especially found A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS memorable because of the way he portrayed the treatment of women.

Sylvia from Fairfax Station, VA
I couldn't put these books down once I started reading.  Riveting!

Lesley from Scotsdale, AZ
Probably more than half the novels I read are about other lands and cultures, and Khaled Hosseini's books are among the best. Beautiful writing and engaging characters make his unusual stories even more interesting. They may live only in a book, but these are real people, and we readers care about them. I am so looking forward to reading his new book.

Betty from Berwyn, IL
Incredibly moving --- both of them. It's hard to believe that A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was not written by a woman. Hosseini showed such empathy.

Gayle from Ames, IA
I was spellbound by THE KITE RUNNER and tormented, in a way, knowing that restitution may have been made, but the scars remain. Khaled Hosseini is a born storyteller.

In A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS I was in awe that a man could write such a powerful book, not just with a female voice, but with two! I plan to read his third whether or not I win a copy.

Rachelle from Raleigh, NC
I have read and loved both books.  I absolutely cannot wait to read AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED.  The characters stay with you. THE KITE RUNNER I have read several times. The characters still permeate with me.  I was so excited to see high school relatives reading this book as it had so many wonderful issues to discuss. Having been a victim of sexual assault this book opened the door for me to discuss the issue with my teenage son.  We had a great discussion and I am thankful for THE KITE RUNNER.

A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was a gift to me from my sons. I loved the main characters redemption, the portrayal of strength amongst adversity. Hosseini handled domestic violence in a way, where I saw the victim as strong not weak. I cried a healthy cry through the book; it was cleansing and I felt strong at the end. Like I said before I cannot wait to read, AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED!

Richard from La Mirada, CA
Read the book THE KITE RUNER first and then saw the movie.  It is sad how some children cannot have a real childhood.

Suzanne from Midlothian, VA
I thought both books were very profound opening up a glimpse into another culture.  It really connected you with the people of that country and opened up how we are so alike yet so different in our lives.

Janet from Ft. Lauderdale, FL
Loved both, but really loved THE KITE RUNNER. The rape scene is still vividly etched into my mind.  I will remember this book for a long time.

Paige from Dallas, TX
THE KITE RUNNER is one of the most moving and relevant stories of our time

Joanne from Poughkeepsie, NY
The CEO of the company I worked for had picked up THE KITE RUNNER at the airport and mentioned that it was really good. So I got a copy and read it. It was very intense. We knew there was something that some of the characters in the book knew, but we didn't find out until the end. That book was definitely memorable.

Lois from Maitland, FL
These books were horrifying and yet thought-provoking.  They really made you think about life elsewhere.

Barbara from Mill Valley, CA
Both absolutely amazing books.  I think all of America was enthralled!

Carolyn from Coldwater, MI
Our book club, the Happy Bookers, loved both books! But we LOVED A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS a little bit more! Maybe because the author told the women's viewpoint so beautifully or maybe because he made some of us cry!

Jill from Laurel, MD
I loved THE KITE RUNNER. It was a beautiful portrayal of friendship between two boys living in a tumultuous country, Afghanistan. It conveyed well how the people dealt with a country in transition also. I haven't read the A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS but want to.

Edna from Prismo Beach, CA
I loved them both very much; plus I had the opportunity to hear and see Khaled Hosseini when he enthusiastically talked about his country, his life and his books. The basic ideas were so familiar and yet so unique to his country that it enforced the concept: "we are all one”.

Janet from Tacoma, WA
These are both books that opened my eyes to another world outside my own. They are both on my permanent "Keep” shelf.

Chris from Fort Wayne, IN
I couldn't put either of them down, but THE KITE RUNNER was especially moving. My son then read it in his junior year in high school and watched the movie, and we had many good discussions about it...I love being able to share good stories with my kid!

Krismar from Waverly, IA
THE KITE RUNNER is one of my favorite books.  I felt so connected with the characters.  It was a book I didn't want to end. I did really like A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS also but in a different way.

Kay from Austin, TX
THE KITE RUNNER was a strong emotional book about the relationship between two young boys --- one of privilege and his servant. The story moved me tremendously.

Julie from Medford, NJ
THE KITE RUNNER was a riveting story. This coming-of-age story in Afghanistan was engrossing yet difficult to read when the brutal abuse of Amir's friend took place. But, just like everyone else, I became a Khaled Hosseini fan after reading this book.

I really looked forward to A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS and it didn't disappoint. The abuse of the wife was, again, a dark element of the story that seems to be Hosseini's realistic writing style. I found the story line very dark. Hosseini's books are not light fare.  This book, like THE KITE RUNNER, left a lasting impression on me.

Lynn from McLoud, OK
I became a fan of Hosseini as soon as I began reading THE KITE RUNNER and it continued with A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. Both books were eye-openers into another culture. I learned so much about his culture from reading the books. The book was happy, sad, shocking, terrifying, and very emotional. I highly recommend both books to anyone who wishes to meet new friends and learn about other cultures.  I am really looking forward to reading AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED as soon as it is released.

Mark from Downers Grove, IL
A friend from work lent me a copy of THE KITE RUNNER and I was blown away. Such intense writing and then a few years later I read A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS and was amazed that it may have even been better.

Kathy from Wilkes Barre, PA
THE KITE RUNNER is a pure, sweet story of the complicated relationships of family and friends.  What people do in the name of love.  A story which can haunt a reader.

Julie from Beloit, WI
I loved it, kept me interested from first chapter. If a book can’t catch my attention from the start I have a hard time staying with it.

Miriam from Madisonville, LA
I liked both books but A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS really touched me. The strong women and the suffering they endured and triumphed over were so life affirming. These novels set in Afghanistan help us to connect with the people of this war-torn country.

Deborah from Pennsboro, WV
I enjoyed THE KITE RUNNER --- it's one of the few books I kept after reading it, and read again almost right away.

Wendy from Winnipeg, Manitoba
I loved THE KITE RUNNER because it showed what life was like in Afghanistan before the fundamentalists took over. However, I think I liked A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS even more because it was a story about women and I found it easier to identify with the protagonist.

Linda from Northborough, MA
I found both books compelling, but I remember THE KITE RUNNER better. The loss of innocence and the loss of a friendship shaped the novel.

Francine from Voorhees, NJ
I read both books and it's hard to say which I liked better.  Both books were well written.  I liked learning about Afghanistan's history and there was great character development.

Anne from El Paso, TX
I loved THE KITE RUNNER.  It transported me to a place and time I could not have imagined.  I was struck by how the actions of one moment can result in a lifetime of regret. The characters were so well developed; you felt like you really knew them.

When A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS came out, I was eager to read it, but was sure it would not be able to match THE KITE RUNNER. What a surprise!  I liked it every bit as much and maybe a little more---largely because the main characters were women.  What a storyteller Hosseini is!  Can't wait for AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED!

Bill from Menasha, WI
Having read both books and used each in my teaching units (Social Studies), I have been waiting for his next work. His first two were outstanding works affording deep insights into a very closed culture. Over the years I have highly recommended these works to many others.

Dani from Gardners, PA
THE KITE RUNNER was a moving and revealing novel that allowed me exposure to a life and country I would otherwise have had no insight. For me, A THOUSAND SPLENDID was not as passionate as THE KITE RUNNER. I didn't get the same feeling of reading an autobiography as I did with THE KITE RUNNER; however I enjoyed A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS.

Jo from Surprise, AZ
My book club read and reviewed both books and so enjoyed them. We have long awaited your next book!  YAY!

Bobbie from Boca Raton, FL
Read both. Thought THE KITE RUNNER ending was too predictable and too nice! Don't remember A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS.

Nora from Lansing, MI
Our Grace Readers Book Club read both of these books and were fortunate enough to see and hear Mr. Hosseini speak at East Lansing.  I know the books are fiction, but they are very believable.  I know some of the first one is based on his early life. He has such a wonderfully expressive style that makes one feel like they are almost there going through the same situations.  Very moving, very touching, very memorable.  Books like that make me want to read non-stop until the end, but also to linger over them to make them last longer.

Mary Jane from Kansas City, MO
These are two of the best written books ever.  My book club still brings up A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS as one of our most favorite books that we have ever discussed.

Betsy from Fairfax, VA
I liked the yin/yang of the books, and wish that we had more such enlightening fiction to shed light on 19th and 20th century history in Afghanistan, a country which is now so linked with the US.

Stephanie from Chester, NH
Loved both these books. Such a contrast to how we live on this side of the world. Looking forward to AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED.

Robin from Point Pleasant, NJ
I really liked THE KITE RUNNER, but I enjoyed A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS even more.  I told my husband to read it and now he teaches it in his AP English class. It really puts a high school student’s  life in perspective.

Kelly from Delphi, IN
I read THE KITE RUNNER in one sitting, on a long plane flight. When I closed the book, I thought to myself, "That is a perfect book." Everything in the story seemed there for a purpose. I liked A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS just as much and was amazed at how well the author could write from a female point of view. I think AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED will be exceptional as well.

Sue from Le Roy, NY
THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS are two of the best novels I have ever read.  The characterizations and plots were both compelling and I didn't want to put the books down.  I am excited to read his third novel.

Gerri from Palos Heights, IL
THE KITE RUNNER was an excellent book portraying the power of friends, family, love and country.

Heather from Auburn, IL
It has been several years since I have read these two books, but they still remain among my favorite books. Such strong stories and characters in both books made these books memorable.  I also loved the historical aspect of the books and how much I learned about the Afghan culture by reading these stories.

Sheila from Polk City, IA
Both books were poignant in their portrayal of another society through the eyes of young people.

Anne from Groton, CT
Hosseini's books have touched me like no other. He opened up and personalized a corner of the world which news reports could not touch. Our community has had the pleasure of hosting Khaled as a speaker twice. THE KITE RUNNER was one of our most popular One Book, One Region picks. As a YA librarian I was able to expose many teens to both the magnificent writing and historical information through these fabulous novels. I would be honored to receive a copy of AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED.

Anne Marie from Cohoes, NY
I liked the story of another culture. The more we learn about others, the more we will realize that we are the same.

Krista from Lexington, KY
I love both books.  A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS is one of my absolute favorites. It such a wonderful story about the bonds and strength of women.

Gail from Flossmoor, IL
THE KITE RUNNER was a guy’s book, and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was for girls. My teenage boys liked THE KITE RUNNER but would never have read A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS.  I loved A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS, but not crazy about THE KITE RUNNER. Anxious to read next one!

Sally from Ramsey, NJ
I enjoyed both books, very well-written and I felt I stepped right into the pages with the characters, great reading and also educational pages out of history.

Iris for Lincolnwood, IL
Hosseini creates characters of vulnerable children and women, whose voices resonate with heartbreaking authenticity.  I am a voracious reader who can easily forget the subject of a book I read so long ago, but with THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS, I can readily recall the stories.

Barbara from Claremore, OK
Loved THE KITE RUNNER.  Couldn't stop reading.  It was like traveling along and watching a strange land go by.

Mae from Washington, NC
THE KITE RUNNER is a good book that people have always needed to read about wealthy and a poor man's son. The story tells of betrayal and redemption.  A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS is a very moving book of families, friendships, faith, salvation and love that chronicles their lives for 30 years of history. A very good book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone!!

Rochelle from Agoura Hills, CA
A very thoughtful look at Afghan culture and life.

David from Newark, DE
Both were introspective, thought-provoking books that I liked very much.

Suzanne from Cranford, NJ
THE KITE RUNNER was a remarkable book. It was so well-written that I kept checking the back cover to see if it was really fiction or not as I thought the author surely must have lived through the experiences in order to have gotten them down on paper so vividly. Although I read it many years ago, I can still recall chapters; such as hiding in the oil tanker. I also read A THOUSAND SPLENDID another powerful book.

Heather from McHenry, IL
I read THE KITE RUNNER a long time ago, but remember it being very well-written and a true eye-opener. I enjoyed it very much. I haven't read A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS yet, but it has been on my “To be Read” list for a while

Joan from Batavia, IL
Loved them both.  Both very sad though I liked that THE KITE RUNNER was from the perspective of boys/men and that A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was from the perspective of girls/women. I loved that you could imagine the landscape of the Middle East. I can't wait to read AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED.

Jane from Longmeadow, MA
Our book club read both books. The transition from Afghanistan and assimilation (or lack thereof) stands out. We had a terrific discussion on women and about fate and choices in the second book.

Karen from El Macero, CA
I enjoyed them both, but especially THE KITE RUNNER which was our book club's choice. As mothers, most of us with sons, we could see and understand the tension between father and son.  It also gave us a glimpse of a country about which we knew so little.  I can’t wait to read Hosseini's new book.

Sandra from Cranberry Township, PA
THE KITE RUNNER is one of my favorite books and it was one of the first books my book club read years ago.  I also read and liked A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. Although I didn't like it as well, it is a memorable book because of the horrible treatment of women in Afghanistan.

Carol from Avon Lake, OH
THE KITE RUNNER was a stunning first novel --- emotionally rich, and thought-provoking. A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS did not disappoint. I eagerly awaited Mr. Hosseini's second novel and I enjoyed it as much as or even more than the first.

Julie from Olympia, WA
My book club read THE KITE RUNNER several years ago, and although the story was somewhat disturbing, we loved the book!  We were fascinated by the kite flying contests, as we had never heard of that before, and we appreciated learning more about the culture in that part of the world.  We thought the overall story was gripping and very well-written.  We thought the ending was a little too "Hollywood", but other than that, we thought it was an excellent novel.

J.R. from Cherry Hill, NJ
We read and discussed both these books for both my book clubs. It resulted in very lively and extended discussions. I personally thought THE KITE RUNNER was a bit too graphic for my taste but I also learned much about the culture and life in places I will probably never visit. Bring on the next book!

Susan from Loveland, CO
Loved THE KITE RUNNER, beautiful writing and story. I used it with my book discussion group several years ago. A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was a good follow-up though not as captivating.

Patti from Brownsburg, IN
Reading THE KITE RUNNER really opened my eyes to the political struggles going on in Afghanistan, but also drew me in with the characters and their emotional struggles with past decisions and forgiveness.

Deb from Shoreview, MN
Our book group read both THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. They were moving books that generated great discussions.

Regina from Ardmore, PA
Two of my most favorite books - moved me, taught me, took my breath away.  It was like THE GOOD EARTH by Pearl S Buck, CHILDHOOD’S END by Arthur C Clarke, FOUNDATION by Isaac Asimov in books that changed my thought processes, opened my mind and moved me beyond myself.  Cannot WAIT for the new one.

Janet from Tigard, OR
THE KITE RUNNER was one of my all-time favorites.  My attention was so riveted and invested in the characters that all my other activities and responsibilities were put on hold!  Reading it also enhanced my enjoyment of the movie.

Phyllis from Rochester Hills, MI
They were such good ways of learning about the Afghan culture and history. The books opened up another world for me!!

Teresa from Naples, FL
A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was one of my all-time favorite books. I learned so much about Afghanistan --- their history, civil war and culture.  I am eagerly anticipating his next book.

Donna from Norman, OK
I read both THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS.  Not only were they great stories, but in this day and age when it's so easy to stereotype, these books made me feel compassion and understanding for the people of Afghanistan and sad for the city of Kabul.  I think these books should be required reading in all American high schools.

Ann from Tracy, CA
THE KITE RUNNER was an eye-opening journey through the diverse political and cultural situations that affected the lives of two socially opposite boy's lives.

June from Lansdale, PA
THE KITE RUNNER was a very heartwarming book.

Elizabeth from Lower Burell, PA
Both books were heart-wrenching, but unforgettable.

Mary for Avon, CT
Both books could be considered "classics". Hosseini's name is revered in book groups as an author who only writes "must-reads."  One never has to stop and recall the stories, THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. They cannot be forgotten.

Paula from Midlothian, VA
I was floored by the way the author opened up a new world for me and my book club (we discussed both books).  I felt I had a better understanding of the issues faced by the regular people in the Afghanistan.

Amy from Palto Alto, CA
Both these books were amazing reads. The language painted a vivid picture of the various places the books were set in. In addition, THE KITE RUNNER was set in Fremont, CA where I lived for many years and Khaled Hosseini had all the details accurate which helped the reader identify with the experiences of the characters.

Andrea from Bethesda, MD
THE KITE RUNNER is one of my favorite books EVER. The trifecta: well-written tale, interesting story, and culturally informative. I recommend it to everyone.

Anita from Summerville, SC
Author is a literary genius! I loved the settings of both works and details of lives during those eras. I learned so very much as well as being absorbed by the characters. Writing style and dialog transported me. Loved both books!

Barbara from Peoria, IL
THE KITE RUNNER was an extremely insightful and interesting book.  For me, it was a first read about a culture I know little about.  Our book club read it and liked it.

Judy from Marshalltown, IA
It has been awhile since I read either of them, but I remember that both of them were compelling reading.  In fact, I could go back and reread them to enjoy all over again.  I'm anxious to read this new one.

Claire for Pittsburgh, PA
I read THE KITE RUNNER, and it typically isn't my type of read but I had heard so much about it. I loved it, even if it was so incredibly sad. I love a boom that makes me feel any emotion strongly. This book truly did that.

Kathy for Manotick, Ontario
I read both these books, and even though they are very different, they were both extremely captivating and informative of the sad and often inhumane life in Afghanistan. Both plots keep you entirely intrigued until the end. My book club did both books and rated them very highly. I am excited to know that Khaled Hosseini has written another novel and will definitely want to get my hands on it as soon as possible.

Ginger from Menlo Park, CA
THE KITE RUNNER is a story that stays with you years later. It’s about the friendship of two young boys of different social classes. The setting is evocative and the story will stay with you for a very long time.

Vicki from Brigham City, UT
I read THE KITE RUNNER. It was a good book. I think it opened my eyes to a lot of hardships people in other countries face and then leaving everything behind to come here to start over in a different country. Eye-opening!

Judy from Gilbert, AZ
Both books were spellbinding. Reading about Afghan culture was eye-opening and each story was deeply moving and stayed with me. I urged everyone I know to read them and then many discussions followed about the novels.

Margaret from Endwell, NY
First of all, I feel Hosseini is a true storyteller! Besides the fact that these books touch your heart they educate the reader about his homeland Afghanistan which I knew very little about. I will always consider these books real treasures and they are always in my top ten recommendations for books that are a must read.

Lori from Denver, CO
I loved both books it gave me a sense of what it is really like to live in that country and culture.

Donna from San Jose, CA
Both books were absolutely marvelous but I have to say that I thought A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was the better story.  So often a new author has a runaway hit and then the second novel is not as good.  Not so this time.  What a wonderful surprise!  I am sure this new book will be just as thought-provoking and with as wonderful characters as his two previous ones.

Sigrun from London, Ontario
I read THE KITE RUNNER a few years ago when the movie came out, but before I watched that. I've always enjoyed traveling, especially in foreign countries and since that's more difficult for me now, the next best thing is to read a book by a person who actually knows the country and the people. I liked the book very much since it gave me exactly that kind of view into such a life. Although I can't guess how much of it is true to life, I find that you can't prevent yourself from expressing your upbringing, your roots in many ways that you don't even realize. Therefore, I'm sure the writer could do no less.

The way of life he wrote about is quite different from the one I know but there are still certain feelings we all share: love, fear, aversion (if not to say hate). We all try to find our way in life and reading how others manage helps us manage as well. In many ways this is not a happy book, but it shows that we can all reach a level of acceptance for our lot in life and thus find some peace.

Cynthia from Petersburg, VA
I gave each five stars on Goodreads.com. Read each upon their release.  Love his writing!

Barbara from Mohawk, NY
It's been quite a while since I've read both THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS but I remember they both stayed with me a long time after the last pages were read.  I've kept both copies in my library and can't wait for  AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED to come out.  What a great way to start my summer reading.

Kaecey from Elkton, MD
Both THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS stayed with me weeks after I finished reading them. They are the kind of books that make you think about your internal values, the big questions in life, and question all you thought you knew.  I enjoyed each so much that I've read both twice. They were top book discussion books and at both meetings the conversation carried on into the late hours of night. Five stars!

Marie from Hibbing, MN
Thoroughly enjoyed THE KITE RUNNER; emotional and educational. Would recommend this book to everyone.

Wendi from Randall, MN
Very well-written and deep-thinking reads. Both books leave you thinking long after you have finished them about how different life turns out for each and every one of us.

Terri from Brentwood, TN
Both books were enlightening and riveting. Incredible stories that left long term effects on both my emotional and intellectual psyche. Can't wait for a new book by Hosseini!

Andrea for High Point, NC
THE KITE RUNNER had a profound effect on me. I found it to be incredibly raw and real. It stays with you long after reading it.

Rosalie for Sarasota, FL
Loved THE KITE RUNNER. Not so much A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. It was too violent at the beginning.

Gina from North Haven, CT
I was moved beyond words with each story and found the background to the country very enlightening. I had trouble with the language but soon picked up the key feelings being explained. It made me think of the people not just a country on the map.

Wendy from Roy, WA
We did both books in my book discussion group. I find Khaled Hosseini a very readable author. THE KITE RUNNER was my favorite, bringing a culture and a time alive for me. The characters were rich and interesting and alive for me as the pictures conjured in my imagination. I can still picture the house and the streets in my head. I LOVE when books take me to those places and leave me with those images.

Paula from Naugatuck, CT
Loved them both. Very well-written, with an up close way of life in Afghanistan.

Pamela from Winnipeg, Manitoba
Loved both! Probably THE KITE RUNNER more, but that's possibly because it was my first experience with the author and it was such a revelation! I can't wait to read the new one!

Barbara from Charlotte, NC
Loved THE KITE RUNNER. We read it for one of our book club choices. It was disturbing and beautiful at the same time.

Virginia from Dale, TX
I read A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS and after I was finished it made me even more grateful to be living in the United States.

Pat from New London Township, PA
These are two of my favorite books. They both helped me to understand and have empathy for those who live with great hardship.  It helped me to teach more about cultures different my own and to see that love, life and the problems we face in both can be universal.

Denise from Laurel, MD
THE KITE RUNNER is a book I will never forget. It teaches much about the history of Afghanistan and its people, and it is so much more. It is a compelling story of friendship and betrayal, beauty and brokenness, and the power of reading and redemption.

Amanda for Oak Creek, WI
THE KITE RUNNER kept my attention through the entire story. It kind of reminded me of some of Shakespeare's works, but set in more modern times.

Linda from Terre Haute, IN
Both books are so intriguing, well-written and informative! One told in a male voice and the other in a female voice. Both about family, friends, love and sacrifices made in a sometimes unforgiving way of life. I cannot wait to read Hosseini's next book!!

Bonnie from Vancouver, British Columbia
It has been a while since I read THE KITE RUNNER, but I remember the story being a sad story about someone who made a decision as a child that he regretted and tried to atone for as an adult.

Tricia from Arvada, CO
I'm always interested in books about different cultures, so I loved both of these books. Usually I get my books from the library, but went out and bought these so I could re-read them :)

Alice M. from Ashland, WI
These two books take us firsthand into lands we would not chose to live in --- but are allowed to experience through the words of Khaled Hosseini. They were both beautiful and brutal. I look forward to his third novel.

Kathleen from Ellicott City, MD
I shall never forget reading THE KITE RUNNER and how it touched my heart and soul.  It gave a true representation of life in Afghanistan at that time and the pain and suffering the Afghans suffered first under the Soviets and how the Taliban made their lives even worse.

Claire from Plainview, NY
The characters, and their situations, decisions, and emotional attachment to their country stayed with me long after I finished reading the last pages of the two books. These novels are rich with thought-provoking issues and themes, and they provided many hours of stimulating discussions. I know the new book will do the same!

Eileen Quinn from Chicago, IL
I've read both books by this author and what is appealing and also compelling is his ability to tell a story with tenderness and interest.  Both books are ones that will change the way one thinks about life and the values we admire and adhere to in our society. The character development is outstanding and inviting.

Lynda from Redding, CA
Khaled Hosseini is one of my top favorite authors and I cannot wait for the release of his newest novel!!! Both THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS were equally captivating, heart-wrenching, and beautifully told.

Sheila from Danvers, MA
I loved getting a different perspective of life in Afghanistan and how the different classes lived side-by-side and the class system wasn't that much different from other countries. I especially felt the compassion the author tried to convey while staying true to the reality of the classes.

Betty from Paramus, NJ
Discussed THE KITE RUNNER in my book group some time ago. We all felt it gave a much better understanding of the Afghan people than seen in the media. Now my granddaughter is just starting to read it in her high school English class. Her friends who read it last semester told her it is awesome and I am looking forward to seeing her reaction to it.

Monica for Austin, TX
THE KITE RUNNER was my first exposure to what life in Afghanistan is like. I could not put it down and picked it for my book club to read. The characters were portrayed in such a way that you felt you truly knew them. The story stayed with me for a long time. I bought A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS right when it came out in hardback. Again, the story was unforgettable. Those two books have sparked an interest in me about that part of the world. I have read several other books about that region and continue to be fascinated by that culture.  I am anxiously awaiting Khaled Hosseini's new book.

Pauline from Monroe, NY
I'm an avid reader. I often judge an author's works by how much I remember about a book long after I've read it. The more I remember, the better the author's writing and storyline. I remember many scenes in THE KITE RUNNER. For example escaping in a fuel truck and driving through the Kyber Pass. In A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS I remember the physical and emotional abuse the young wife endures and how she is locked in a room to suffer. This author's works are very moving and I look forward to reading his latest novel.

Howie from Marietta, GA
THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS were amongst two of the most moving novels, if not the most moving novels I've read. They both touched my heart and filled my soul up. I've long been waiting for Khaled Hosseini's novel.

Kathy from Chittenango, NY
THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS are both very powerful and moving books.

Linda from Nampa, ID
I have read both books. I remember when the second book came out; people who read both would express which one they liked better. There was no clear winner. My own mother read both books also. She liked THE KITE RUNNER better. I liked A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS better. Without spoiling the ending for anyone who hasn't read it, I was so moved after finishing A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS that I actually did NOT pick up my next book to read and start reading it. I spent two full days in mourning out of respect for the main character before I opened another book. I don't think I've ever been that moved by a book in my life.

Deb from Perry, OH
While I was enthralled with THE KITE RUNNER, I just loved A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS because of the female perspectives presented, especially for a culture of feminine oppression, suppression and repression.

Vicki from East Meadow, NY
The two protagonists in THE KITE RUNNER, Amir and Hassan, cannot be more different, but have developed a close brotherly relationship. Hosseini effortlessly bring us into this exotic culture of proud Afghan people. Set against a stark and desolate environment, he tells such a beautiful story that it is hard to believe that English isn't his first language. I read this book so long ago but it still remains embedded in my memory.

A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS is the story of two Afghani women, Mariam and Laila, who go from being enemies to unlikely friends. In telling this story Hosseini informs us of how much harm intolerance and religious fanaticism can cause. Again, a beautifully written story about love and sacrifice told against the tumult of Afghanistan's history. This book moved me greatly and should not be missed.

Blanche from Glen Head, NY
The revealing of life outside of the United States was mesmerizing. It was a learning experience.

Cynthia from Rensselaer, NY
Both books were extremely interesting to read. They gave a look into life in Afghanistan and families that left the country. Hosseini is a great storyteller who brings his characters to life. Life is sometimes cruel but love champions.

Kathy from Lansdale, PA
THE KITE RUNNER was one of the first books our book club read, as we started as it when it was released.  It is still a favorite of all the books we have read over the years and comes up often in discussions!

A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was also a selection we truly enjoyed. We are all looking forward to Hosseini's new release for our selection the month it comes out!

Nancy from Taunton, MA
I loved THE KITE RUNNER and I still vividly remember many scenes from the book --- the kite flying, the harrowing trip to rescue Amir's friend's son, how the kite flying eventually helps the son. In A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS I was distressed by the plight of the women in Afghanistan though it's only too true.

Ruth from Pompton, NJ
THE KITE RUNNER was such a wonderful book. This heartbreaking story made me cry.  It was such a simple down-to-earth moving story of friendship. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Gladys from Houston, TX
Afghan history is such a timely subject with the current events there having a powerful impact on our lives, this book sounds fascinating. I love the title AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED.

Linda from Sammamish, WA
A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS is one of the most enlightening and revealing novels on the life of women in Afghanistan. The country has spent so many years at war that it has never had the opportunity to advance in any discernible way.  There is hope, though, for redemption brought out by the two major female characters as their love and respect for each other develops over time. I highly recommend this book!

Angie for Stoughton, WI
THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS are two of my favorite books ever!  They are both powerful, life changing stories. I can hardly wait to read AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED!

Susan from Saratoga Springs, NY
THE KITE RUNNER was our town's 1st community-read back in 2005. Next year will be our 10th year and we'd love to select his new novel. Sort of come full circle!  I absolutely was enchanted by both novels. Our town librarian went to Boston and interviewed him since he couldn't come to us. We recorded it and I watch it from time to time.

Margaret from Cincinnati, OH
I felt like both of these titles opened me up to a culture that I only saw through a war on TV. It showed me a beautiful history, culture that I would have never discovered otherwise. I felt Hosseini's writing was deeply powerful and passionate particularly as he developed the family dynamics. Truly wonderful novels! Would love to have the new one!

Janice from Wilmington, DE
THE KITE RUNNER is a remarkable book, a page-turner that is also emotionally and intellectually challenging. I read it with my book group and we all found it tremendously moving.

Rosalie for Jamestown, NY
I thoroughly enjoyed both books. Character development was well done. I was drawn into the stories and felt like I truly understood the characters and their actions.

Sandra for Kingston, Prince Edward Island
I have read only THE KITE RUNNER, but I found it a very informative and disturbing read.  I have a copy of A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS and also look forward to the new book from this important writer.

Susan from Pembroke Pines, FL
It is so interesting to read about other cultures and other countries.

Deborah from Libertyville, IL
THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS were beautiful stories founded in friendship, family and wars in the Middle East.  Warm, rich characters made these novels ones to read again and again.

Faye from Marion, SC
THE KITE RUNNER was one of the most powerful books I have ever read. The story is about the way the wealthy boy betrayed his poor friend was infuriating to me, such betrayal of his dear friend who would do anything for him. I read the book years ago and it still bothers me when I think of it. There are many layers to this story--- the culture of the country, power, wealth, greed, lies, deceit and the power the "haves" have over the "have-nots".  It is also about love and a long journey to finally doing the right thing at all costs.

Katherine from Austin, TX
Even though it has been several years since I read THE KITE RUNNER, it made quite an impression as I remember the relationship between the father and his sons.  It was a great discussion book for our book group.

Natasha from Greensboro, NC
I absolutely loved THE KITE RUNNER! It's been several years since I read this book, but WOW, it is one I'll never forget and is still listed as one of my favorite and highly recommended books. The subject matter is difficult. When I was told what the story was about, I cringed and thought surely I would never get through it. The author does such an amazing job of writing that you are drawn in and pulled through a tale that keeps you on the edge of your seat! I sometimes had to put the book down, cry, or just contemplate what I had just read. A tragic, but somewhat redeeming story of friendship, forgiveness, the ability to overcome even the harshest of circumstances and redemption.

Shirley for Franksville, WI
I loved the character development in THE KITE RUNNER and I think that the author brought the feelings of the characters into the story as well as their special bond.  A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was well-written but the story was disturbing to me.

Karen from Lafayette Hill, PA
I read both books. They are both compelling reads. A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was a bit harrowing. It was difficult to read about the atrocities of the Taliban.

Patricia from Jonesboro, GA
My book club read both of these books and loved them both.  I actually thought A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was harder to read because of the violence to women.  They were both very hard to read but very interesting and informative.  My book club also watched the movie THE KITE RUNNER together after we read the book.

DeAnna from Rochestor, MN
I loved THE KITE RUNNER. It is one of those books that makes you stop and think even long after you are done reading it.

Sandy from Sicklerville, NJ
Although I read both books several years ago, I still remember the stories to this day.  You don't realize how wonderful it is to live in our country when you hear about the horrid lives that people in other countries endure. I am looking forward to reading Khaled Hosseini’s new book.

Lindsay from Lanahm, MD
There's not enough time in the day to explain how much I loved THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. I'm not much of a crier when I read. I definitely teared up when reading THE KITE RUNNER but I was all out bawling during A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS.

Khaled Hosseini has an incredible way of presenting flawed characters who feel so real that I get super attached to them. Both books are beautifully set and opened my eyes further to things going on in Afghanistan. I'm a huge historical fiction fan, and I especially love books where there is not only a great story, but I actually learn something. I learned more about Afghanistan reading these two books than I have listening to news reports.

Claudia from Birmingham, AL
THE KITE RUNNER is on my list of my "All Time Favorite Books" and I thought it was wonderful! A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was also good but I did not enjoy it as much.  I really think both books were well-written and I can't wait to read his new book!

Heather from Auburn, IL
I read both books by Khaled Hosseini and they remain among my favorite books of all time.  They were both so moving and beautiful stories. They also provided some insight into life and a  land we often hear about in the news but don't really know much about at all in reality. I am anxiously awaiting his third book coming in May!

Sarah for Buffalo, NY
I read both of these books and went on to host conversations for them with my book club. Both stories were heartbreaking and eye-opening. They are riveting reads. Sometimes the violence is hard to bear but you cannot turn away from the story. Upon reflection, it would seem that neither of these covers subjects I would have known much about. The lives of our central characters were foreign to our way of life here in the USA. But Khaled writes so powerfully and passionately it's easy to become swept up in the story as it moves from one place to another through the book. We have often said that we wished Khaled Hosseini had written more and now it seems we will be rewarded with a new read!!

Donna for Johnson City, TN
A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS is one the best novels I have ever read.  The writing is excellent, as is the character development. I grew to care deeply about the two main characters, who are two Afghan women together by tragic fate. The novel provides an insight into the atrocities of the Taliban, the extremely conservative culture of Afghanistan, and the very low status of women in this Middle Eastern culture. Afghan women are the victims of a male-dominated society, especially when the Taliban is in power.  The novel does a lot to help educate readers in other countries about the culture of the Middle East, particularly Afghanistan, and also provides some interesting history about the government/leadership struggles of the country. I highly recommend this novel!

Ginny from Troutdale, OR
I read A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS a couple of months ago and was absolutely awestruck by the story. It gave me an awareness of the area, the culture and the treatment of women in that society. It illustrated an enduring and beautiful friendship between women living in a horrible scenario. I will be reading THE KITE RUNNER in the future, as well as AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED. In fact, I will read anything by this author.

Hilaire from Fairfield, CT
A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS has to be one of my favorite books. I could not put it down even though it was a story about women who had no rights and were tortured, which was so hard to read about. It really made me think about how lucky women are to live in the USA.

Rhoda for Butler, NJ
Our Book Club read both books and thought they were wonderful; very thought-provoking and good look inside a different culture.

Mary from New Brighton, MN
Both of these books were a wonderful window into the history, people and culture of Afghanistan, a country which is not written about much in recent fiction.

Alison from Asbury, NJ
Khaled Hosseini's books opened my mind and heart to a world I would never have known, and his characters have never left me.

Helen from Prospect, CT
Both stories were so powerful and rich in detail that they have stayed with me even after years have passed since I read them.

Rhonda from Riverside, CA
THE KITE RUNNER was one of the most tragic heartbreaking books I have ever read. It was so beautifully written impossible to put down.

Patti from Waukesha, WI
I read both books and enjoyed the history, the Afghan society and way of life, the love of families and Hosseini's wonderful way of story-telling.

Kelly from Hobart, WI
I read and enjoyed both books. They dealt with some disturbing issues but were not exploitive.

Sally from Saint Johns, FL
Both of my book clubs really enjoyed these books.  Well-written and put us in touch with another part of the world so we could relate to the people.

Helma from Delta, British Columbia
I read THE KITE RUNNER, I loved that the main character had realistic flaws which I could really relate too. A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was a little harder to read and I could not finish. I hope one day I will be ready to read it.

Carol from Kirkland, WA
Both books are so rich in language and plot. They gripped me with their emotions...love, hate, horror and beauty. They both are books that remain on my shelf for re-reading. I can't wait to read AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED.

Bob from East Brunswick, NJ
I have been an avid reader for over 50 years and both THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS are among the ten best books I’ve read.

Jane from Brighton, MI
Both books take you into a different world.  They are so well-written that you lose yourself in their stories and don't want to put them down.

Kathleen from Norwood, PA
I enjoyed both books by Hosseini. I had always chosen books that were set in the USA for some reason, usually family sagas and a lot of southern fiction.  A coworker offered me THE KITE RUNNER and what a new adventure for me. The story was and still is unforgettable. Those two books broadened my book choices now. To read about other cultures is a wonderful thing and to have it done by Hosseini is an added bonus. Great reads!  Looking forward to his next!

Pamela from Albertville, AL
Both were beautifully written, heart-breaking novels of a haunting landscape. Through both, the author's pains at the changes in his country were apparent. I particularly loved the books as a window into this country and its history as it passed from an idyllic setting to a war zone.

Ann from Skokie, IL
THE KITE RUNNER was a real page-turner. I especially enjoyed the surprise ending.

Igna K. from Springfield, VA
Absolutely thought that Dr. Hosseini did a magnificent job on both books. The first was novel in its setting and its morals. But A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was beyond description; educational, sad, traumatic, grotesque, beautiful, historical, and I could keep on going.  Can't wait to read his third book!  By the way, I heard him speak at the local university.  He is just dynamite!  I wish him all the luck in the world.

Jenelle from Kernersville, NC
His books transport me to a completely foreign landscape and way of life.  I feel like the expressions of the characters are so heartfelt and real.  I cannot wait to read his next book.

Christine from Lawton, OK
I read the amazing book A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS, seen through the eyes of the two women Laila and Mariam. This book covers the cultural treatment of women in Afghanistan with a background of the constant fighting and turmoil over a thirty-three year period.  It is so vividly written, that one actually feels that they are there with the two women.

Beth from Breckenridge, CO
I read and enjoyed both THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. The second book touched me more than the first, however, and I think it's because the protagonist was female, like me, so I could relate to her emotions better.

Lindsey from Minneapolis, MN
THE KITE RUNNER defined friendship in a way I had never seen before. Friendship full of unexpected complications, secrets, and obligations--yet something you wouldn't change.

Debra from Roswell, GA
They made me feel, truly feel for the characters.  Not a lot of books do that to me.  It is a sign of a great book when the words move you to emotions.

Alyson from Shaker Heights, OH
THE KITE RUNNER has a clear voice of the dilemmas of a young boy and his relationship with a friend that he wants to rescue. The setting is foreign and intriguing.

Linda from Chatsworth, CA
THE KITE RUNNER was one of those stories for me that stays with you and was so beautifully told. I hesitated to read A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS because how could it compare to such a wonderful book as THE KITE RUNNER.  I was not disappointed and enjoyed the story and writing equally as well.

Mary from Philadelphia, PA
It has been a while since I read these books.  I enjoyed THE KITE RUNNER so much that I quickly bought the hard back of A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS when it was released.  These books gave me a glimpse into a world I had only heard about.  It brought the country and the people and what they endure to life.  Amazing reads!

Sarah from Grass Lake, MI
THE KITE RUNNER was an amazing book! I read it in one sitting (back before I had a toddler). I felt like it was not only a readable page-turner, but that I learned something about another culture while I was reading, which always makes me happy.

Diana from Philadelphia, PA
I absolutely loved A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS! My favorite character is Laila. I imagined a beautiful girl who had experienced the ugliest part of life but still triumphed through it all and saw light at the end of the tunnel with the love of her life. I wasn't able to read THE KITE RUNNER, but I did see the movie. My emotions were on a roller coaster during that movie. I felt hate towards Amir when he didn't save his best friend/half-brother Hassan when he was supposed to. I felt the guilt that Amir had in heart when he learned about everything that happened in Kabul after he left, and I felt the love, loyalty, and devotion that Hassan had towards his family.

Both books are definitely memorable and I would recommend them to anyone and everyone. They teach life lessons and morals and allow us to always remember how thankful we should be for what we have because there are those in the world who have nothing but still find happiness in everything.

Maria from Franklin, MA
Both presented a view of Afghanistan that I had never seen and was not presented in any of the run-up to war.

Karen from North Richland Hills, TX
We read both of these books in our Book Club, WOW, Women of Words.  Both were filled with topics that provoked intense discussion.

Jamise from Fort Washington, MD
A wealth of knowledge and new found respect about a culture and land that I knew little about.

Rebecca from Mohawk, NY
I read about these countries and people in the magazines and newspapers in the USA, but the author opens a window so I am able to peek in and hear how they think, speak, and feel. I meet the characters, see life through their eyes, feel their pain and endure their unbearable struggles with them. Through this window I see a people so very different and yet so similar to myself. His writings bring me to a place of understanding, empathy, and respect for a people who before were only a headline. Compassion, equality and dignity silently scream out in his writings leaving only questions --- such a brutal existence, such strong people!

Myrna from Boca Raton, FL
Both are outstanding beautifully written stories about other cultures, other landscapes. Hosseini delves into friendship, family, history, religion, values and power of relationships.

Brenda from Mississauga, Ontario
I have read THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS. The storytelling was amazing. As I read both novels I found myself instantly involved with the characters and their stories. I loved both books! I am looking forward to reading AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED. I have a sneaky suspicion I am going to love it too.

Deb from Brick, NJ
These two books were the most amazing books I ever read.  Whenever someone is looking for a good book to read I always ask if the read them if not I tell them they must read them. Can't wait for the next book!

Virginia from Ventura, CA
Both books are unforgettable and my husband and I have both re-read them and discussed them at length.

Chekita from Hendorsen, KY
I loved THE KITE RUNNER; it is one of my favorite books. I feel the author weaves a rich tapestry of characters and I read the book in one day. We have also used it as a book club choice.

Marion from Atlantic Beach, NJ
I liked THE KITE RUNNER. It was a unique story. The follow-up was good but not quite as good as THE KITE RUNNER.

Linda from Columbia, MO
Both books made me aware of conditions in people's lives that personalized events I had only read about in the news.

Linda from Chanute, KS
Wonderful! Gave a glimpse of life in the Muslim culture and what life was like before and during the war.

Leanna from Ira, VT
Simply amazing writing and story-telling. So excited he has a new book out!

Linda from Hettinger, ND
Not easy reading, but intense and thought-provoking.

Jayme from Virginia Beach, VA
I read THE KITE RUNNER several years ago and the story has haunted me since reading it.  I just finished A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS and think everyone should read it to gain an understanding of the turmoil and plight of women and children suffering under religious dictatorships. The book was also an excellent "first step" introduction on the current history of Afghanistan. I couldn't put it down.

Maggie from Phoenix, AZ
It is difficult to imagine the hardships that people in other parts of the world suffer. Hosseini has presented his native Afghanistan with a mixture of sadness and love that can only come from one who has lived it. The culture, that seems incredibly harsh to those of us outside of it, is accepted and has been accepted for thousands of years...with no end in sight. I look forward to reading AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED

Lydia from Cheboygan, MI
THE KITE RUNNER is a book I will never forget. I always hope every book I read will leave me with the memory of the story like this novel.

Marcia from Bristol, CT
THE KITE RUNNER ... a very powerful narrative

Martha from Luray, VA
Engaging --- both books draw you into a culture.  Both books are easy to recommend as essential reading because they are well structured and the use of language couldn't be more accurate in describing the heartache of the characters.

Barbara-Ann from Sea Isle City, NJ
A must- read for everyone. I've read both more than once and have enjoyed each even more.

Linda from Sayville, NY
I found THE KITE RUNNER to be a truly engrossing story. I was impressed by the author's ability to tell the story of a young man looking back on growing up in Afghanistan and a friendship he shared with his father's servant. He captured the changing, turbulent times in Afghanistan, and its aftermath, as well as the effects the upheaval had on his family and friends. He was able to let the reader feel the story from the eyes of a young boy and from the man looking back on his life.

A Thousand Splendid Suns was an excellent second book by the author. This time Khaled Hosseini told the story of two women trapped in the Afghan culture. It always amazes me when a male author can write a novel from the point of view of women and make you forget that he is not one himself.  I loved both books. They were intelligent stories that stayed with you long after the final page.

Rosanne from Franklin Square, NY
Both books taught me much about Afghanistan and the plight of their people. A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS addressed the issue women face in the region. Both books were extremely well written and both have become some of my favorite books.

Becky from Houston, TX
THE KITE RUNNER has long been a favorite book of mine. No other book I have ever read put me through so many emotions. At one point I actually threw the book across the room and said I couldn't read any more. But within the hour I was back reading as the book has that much pull on you. A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was good but definitely did not live up to THE KITE RUNNER.

Darlene from Dodge, ND
I loved both of them.  He helped me see more clearly what life is like there.  Very enlightening!

Jeanette from Cheboygan, MI
I loved THE KITE RUNNER but I will never forget A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS which opened me to the reality of life for females in Afghanistan.

D. from Raleigh, NC
I have read both and they were really interesting. I learned so much from reading them.

Elizabeth from Murrieta, CA
I thought the books were well-written, and gave insight into a culture that I was totally unfamiliar with.

Laura from Hinesburg, VT
THE KITE RUNNER was very good book although hard to read at times because of the sadness in the life of the main character.

Anna from Tulsa, OK
THE KITE RUNNER was my favorite of the two as it was a beautifully written story of redemption.  You felt as if you were there in Afghanistan when the Russians invaded.

A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS was an enjoyable book since Hosseini is a wonderful writer and he wrote so well about two women.  As a side note I'm excited because Hosseini is coming to Tulsa and I plan to get tickets to hear him speak in October.

Wendy from Poulsbo, WA
A wonderful insight to life in Afghanistan.  The plight of women is something that should be written about and brought to light.  I hope he continues to enlighten us to the aspects of living there.

Lori from Flower Mound, TX
I read both of these books many years ago. They are great stories but I can't say they are enjoyable stories. The harsh reality of life in Afghan is hard to take. It breaks your heart to read these stories and you don't forget them either. Our book club still brings them up every once in awhile.

Donna from Boerne, TX
Mr. Hosseini swept me into his homeland with his wonderful writing creating a visual landscape in my mind.  I await my next trip via AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED.

Liz from Maitland, FL
I thought THE KITE RUNNER and A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS were both beautifully written books.  They were compelling to read and gave some excellent insights into the lives of people living in cultures very different from our own.

Linda from Syracuse, NY
Both books were moving and very interesting but a thousand splendid suns was the best. To learn of such a different culture than ours and to be frustrated over their restrictions of women was informative but I was often outraged while reading it, as well as saddened and appreciative of everything my daughters and I have in this life.

Lynn from Burnsville, MO
I love fictional books that, in addition to providing an interesting and compelling story, also provide an accurate backdrop of historical and/or cultural details in areas that are foreign to me. Klahed Hosseini's books definitely fit within this category.

Magali from Altamonte Springs, FL
They are both great books. It gives you great insight about growing up in a foreign country where there are many difficulties. It’s a survival story with great feeling and sense of friendship.  It also relates to immigrants in the US and the adaptation to a new environment.  It's a very touching story which I enjoyed to the fullest.

Shannon from Falls Church, VA
I have read both and they are equally entertaining reads. A lot of imagery that stirs your emotions. Happiness, childhood dreams and innocence, sadness, anger, hatred, etc. Wonderful books! I can't wait to read the next one!

Michelle from St. John, Newfoundland
THE KITE RUNNER while very sad to read brought much enlightenment to me. Great read and well developed characters.

Erika from Port Orchard, WA
It was six years ago, and I was a senior in high school when I first read THE KITE RUNNER.  I remember that if we were under 18 we had to have our parents sign a permission slip form stating that they allowed us to read the new required material.  Of course, that permission slip only got us even more intrigued. It was the best thing all of the Senior English teachers could do to make us want to read it. I remember finishing it before it was due; it was thrilling, fast paced and mind consuming. It left me questioning what was right and wrong, and the power of friendship and love. I remember my grandmother ran into my room because she heard me sobbing when I finished it.  She had no idea that I was even reading anything; she thought that one of my friends had died. And in a way, one of my friends HAD died. That was the power that Khaled Hosseini had over me while I read THE KITE RUNNER.

Miky from Warne, NC
I have been looking forward to reading the latest book by Hosseini. His portrayal of Afghanistan, and the city of Kabul where the stories take place, has a long history of occupations and wars with its different ethnic tribes, Islam, economic classes and gender. In A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS he tells the story of Afghani women and the hardships that face them with each regime change. In THE KITE RUNNER we learned about Afghanistan before the Russian’s were there, about two boys, growing up, betrayal and redemption. Both were beautifully written. The author helps us to see the experience of Afghans that most of us know very little.

Deena from Worcester, MA
Both were amazing reads. We need more books that enlighten readers about the world around us.

Janet from Billerica, MA
These books have left a lasting impression on my mind. I have never read such powerful books. As I was reading I would hop on the internet to research and see where this took place and what was it like before the wars. I told everyone how special these books were and that they should read them to experience them. I cannot wait to read this new book the writer is so gifted it is like watching a movie in your mind. A truly great experience through the written word!

Judi from Mineola, TX
My book club has read THE KITE RUNNER and we all really liked it. It was hard to read the parts with so much violence, but I know this really happens in this part of the world. Loved how it ended!

Deby from Blaine, MN
A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS opened my eyes to some of the injustices that occur around the world.  It taught me that women can overcome adversity that I never could have imagined.  I enjoyed reading about the history of the region where the book was set.  I had never thought much about that and the assumptions that I had made were corrected. Overall, while the story is not a "feel-good" book, it is definitely a fabulous read and enjoyable.

Amanda from Granbury, TX
I first read THE KITE RUNNER in 2005, for a book club discussion.  Recently, I decided to listen to the audio version of this powerful story. Khaled Hosseini does an excellent job reading his own work, and it's wonderful to have a reader who knows exactly how to pronounce the Farsi and Dari words he sprinkles in the novel. Set in Afghanistan and Pakistan in 1975-76, 1981, and August 2001; and in Fremont, California, from 1981 through December 2001, this novel has as its backdrop the tumultuous recent history of Afghanistan --- the overthrow of the monarchy, the invasion of the Soviets, the takeover by the Taliban, and 9/11. Highly recommended. The graphic novel version, illustrated by Fabio Celoni and Mirka Andolfo, doesn't have the depth of the original novel, but would be another good way (besides the audiobook) to introduce this worthwhile book to a reluctant reader.

While Hosseini’s THE KITE RUNNER told a story of Afghanistan from the male perspective, A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS is told from the female view, and that may be why I liked it better. I think this book deserved all the hype it got. I found myself eagerly looking forward to my commute, so I could find out what happened next.

Bobbie from Boca Raton, FL
Disappointed in the ending of THE KITE RUNNER. Too much of a fairy tale. Have to admit I don't remember A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS.

Kari from Maplewood, MI
I loved both stories. They are both on my best read list.  Khaled Hosseini writes in a way that you can actually feel what the characters are feeling.

Pam from Sunfield, MN
Both books were well written & gave me powerful insights into a culture I was largely unfamiliar with. I enjoy exploring other traditions & learning about our differences & shared humanity. At times the books made me uncomfortable & sad but that's part of reading about other parts of our world.

Karen from Laporte, MN
Read THE KITE RUNNER thought it was dark but interesting --- and thought it unique that there were not women in it as main characters. Haven't read A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS yet.

Arlita from Bethany, OK
People who loved the earlier books are looking forward to a new one.  I predict that it will be an easy best-seller.

Chris from Virgnia
Khaled Hosseini is on my top 5 favorite authors.  I purchased THE KITE RUNNER and was totally blown away.  The story was incredible and heart breaking.  I went out and purchased the movie also.  Of course it didn't hold up as well as the book, but that is because Hosseini's writing is incredible. He has such heart and passion for the country.

When I saw A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS I was a little tentative as an author's 2nd book after a best seller, never seem to measure up and I could not believe it would compare to THE KITE RUNNER, but boy was I wrong - I think I like A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS a bit better!  If there was a fire and I had to grab 3 books off my shelf - these would be the first two!  I can't wait for AND THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED!

Denis from Prospect Heights, IL
THE KITE RUNNER showed how children imitate the violence of adult rape.

Shelley from Centennial, CO
Excellent, moving insight into another culture.

Cassandra from Garfield, NJ
I read both books and would have to say I love A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS better but it was such a close call. It is hard to say. They are both fabulously put and I wrote several papers for school on both of them they were so fun to analyze and just really get into. I am a huge fan!

Charlene from Spotsylvania, VA
These are nice books to learn how it was in an earlier time in a different country.

Buddy from Jefferson, GA
A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS is an enjoyable book about Afghan and a moving story. The book is great!
