Books on Screen

Each month, our Books on Screen feature spotlights movies, television shows, miniseries and specials that are based on books of various genres --- including novels, memoirs, comics, children's books, short stories and poetry --- along with the latest DVD releases.

March 2015

Well, loyal Books on Screen readers, we’ve made it through another awards season and are one more entertainment year wiser.

March 2015

This March, Tris and Four are back on the big screen! In Insurgent, the two are on the run from Jeanine and the rest of the Erudite faction. Together they learn the secrets of their world and race against time to protect its future. Based on Veronica Roth's thrilling bestseller, this is definitely a sequel YA fans are going to want to see!

Or if you're more into fairy tales, check out Disney's new live-action Cinderella. In this retelling, a poor servant stepdaughter just wants to go to the ball, but needs a little help --- and some classic glass slippers --- from an old beggar woman with a magic touch!

So get out there this March and see some of these great books on screen!

February 2015

Valentine's Day may be just around the corner, but if you're not into romance and hearts this February, you may want to check out the action-filled antidote, Kingsman: The Secret Service instead. Based on the comic book series, this is the story of Eggsy, an edgy teenager, who gets recruited by a secret spy organization. He joins their viciously competitive training course just in time to try to save the world from an evil genius. There's also The Duff,  in which high school student Bianca seeks to turn the school's social structure upside down.

Or if you don't want to brave the winter weather, check out all the great choices on TV and on DVD, below!

February 2015

Breaking news: Love is no longer the aggresive, beating heart of February! Or at least you wouldn’t know that it is just by considering the movies coming out this month. Whereas in past Februarys (Februaries?), we cinephiles have been bombarded with all manner of romantic films --- comedies, dramas, classics and otherwise --- this year Hollywood seems to have given us a much-needed break. So unless you consider Fifty Shades of Grey a love story for the ages (no judgment), there is neither a lovestruck heroine nor a grand romantic gesture in sight. It looks like we dodged a heart-shaped bullet this year...at least until March!

January 2015

Warm winter greetings, Books on Screen lovers! And while warm might be looking like a frozen pipe dream as we gear up for the chillier winter months, we at the very least can distract ourselves with the season’s various award shows --- broadcast from the only warm physical place on the planet right now: Hollywood! Or, if you need more immediate relief, just Google “Channing Tatum in a tux.”

January 2015

January is one of the coldest months of the year, making it a great time to stay warm with some terrific book-to-screen adaptations. For a cozy, heartwarming time, try Paddington, the film that brings the beloved teddy bear to life and is already a huge hit in the UK. Or enjoy the Cymbeline, a gritty, explosive movie based on one of Shakespeare's plays.

January 2015

This January, look out for the American release of Paddington, the fun and charming story about a bear who journeys from his home in Peru to find a famous explorer in London. While there, he warms the hearts of the Brown family and avoids being captured by a museum taxidermist. Based on Michael Bond's A Bear Called Paddington series, Paddington is the perfect family-friendly adventure story filled with lots of laughs --- and a cuddly bear!

December 2014

Between the Sony hack and cheesy award bait, movie magic seems harder to come by this holiday season. Fortunately, we have a great roundup of books on screen to keep you spellbound until the new year!

December 2014

Looking to watch something musical this December? Check out the new modern-day version of Annie. Featuring some of your favorite songs from the classic musical, updated for a modern retelling, this looks like it's going to be a lot of fun! With a star-studded cast and a great soundtrack, you’ll definitely be singing along to “It’s The Hard Knock Life” and "Tomorrow!"

So try not to dance in the aisles when you go see December's books on screen!

December 2014

This December, celebrate the holidays by going on an adventure! You could join Bilbo and the gang as they battle for the ultimate fate of Middle Earth and defeat the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Or follow the harrowing true story of Louie Zamperini, a World War II soldier who survives a plane crash, drifts on the sea for 47 days, then spends over two years as a prisoner of war in Unbroken.
