Books on Screen

Each month, our Books on Screen feature spotlights movies, television shows, miniseries and specials that are based on books of various genres --- including novels, memoirs, comics, children's books, short stories and poetry --- along with the latest DVD releases.

February 2014

February means a lot of things to a lot of different people. For the movie industry, it means cashing in on our midmonth obsession with all things L-O-V-E.  In theaters this month are two movies based on books about love taken to the extreme. The first is Endless Love, which stars Alex Pettyfer and newcomer Gabriella Wilde as star-crossed lovers David and Jade in this adaptation of the Scott Spencer novel of the same name. The lines between love and obsession become increasingly blurred as the pair pursue each other, despite the disapproval of Jade’s overprotective parents. If you'd prefer a more unambiguous, beautiful message about love, look no further than A Winter’s Tale, which is a story about using the power of love to overcome the constraints of space and time --- and even death. The movie looks devastatingly lovely, and I recommend bringing tissues and chocolates to get you through it.  And if you're more in the mood to watch a movie that focuses on sibling love...and you know, vampires...look no further than Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters, based on Richelle Mead's bestselling series.

February 2014

February means a lot of things to a lot of different people. For the movie industry, it means cashing in on our mid-month obsession with all things L-O-V-E. And for those of us who keep our wary Valentine’s distance, there’s plenty to see on TV (or to load up on your DVR for post-Olympics binge-watching on February 24th). Let's just say if channel surfing were an Olympic sport, I’d be draped in stars and stripes and gleaming gold medals.

January 2014

Happy New Year, books on screen lovers! If The Desolation of Smaug whet your appetite for epic creatures, then check out Dr. Frankenstein's creation, Adam, as he finds himself in the middle of a world-destroying battle in I, Frankenstein. If you’re in the mood for lighter fare (or want to stay inside your home instead of venturing into January’s frigid temperature) pick up Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 on DVD. However, make sure you have plenty of snacks by your side, or you're sure to get hungry!

If The Desolation of Smaug whet your appetite for epic creatures, then go get your fix with I, Frankenstein, where Dr. Frankenstein's creation, Adam, finds himself in the middle of a world-destroying battle. If you're in the mood for a dark family drama, consider watching the Lifetime movie Flowers in the Attic, based on the cult novel of the same name. Or for lighter fare, pick up Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 on DVD, but make sure you have plenty of snacks by your side or you're sure to get hungry!

Happy New Year, Books on Screen lovers! We’re starting 2014 off strong. While awards season kicks into full gear this month, movies take a bit of a breather from the intensity of the past few weeks. Theaters may be short on the more serious Oscar bait, but there are plenty of high-octane thrillers heating up the screens this frosty winter. Snow money? Snow problem! If you’re stuck inside this month, there’s plenty to see on TV, including a highly anticipated cult-classic adaptation and the return of a whole bunch of vampires.

It has been far too long since we've had any hobbits, wizards or dwarves in our lives! Starting December 13, you can travel back to Middle Earth with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the second installment of The Hobbit trilogy. This time, Bilbo, Gandalf and a host of other creatures journey across the continent to restore surly leader Thorin Oakenshield to his throne, and Legolas joins the group to help fight an epic battle.

Thanksgiving marked the official start of the holiday season, which means we won’t be short on cheer or great movies and television shows to watch this month. Much like the chicken and the egg, we don’t know which came first, but quality entertainment and holiday spirit certainly have always had a long, happy and interdependent relationship. So, as with our spiral hams, let’s dig right in and unravel this month’s books on screen.

It goes without saying that the closer we get to the holiday season, the more we can expect from our film studios and television networks. Now that Halloween is but a spooky memory and winter is in the air, moviegoers can look forward to plenty of quality entertainment this month. From hotly anticipated blockbusters (I’m lookin’ at you, Catching Fire) to smaller films with some seriously literary pedigrees, there’s something for everyone on screen in November.
