Books on Screen

Each month, our Books on Screen feature spotlights movies, television shows, miniseries and specials that are based on books of various genres --- including novels, memoirs, comics, children's books, short stories and poetry --- along with the latest DVD releases.

March 2016

It’s finally March, and that means it’s almost time to pull out the T-shirts, shorts and skirts we were sadly deprived of during winter. Even though the weather is getting nicer, there's still no better way to spend a lazy day than with a great film and lots of snacks.  If you're looking for a way to spend a cozy weekend, here are some exciting book to screen adaptations hitting theaters this month.

March 2016

Well, well, well! The Oscars have come and gone, and --- much like our waning winter --- awards season this year was a mild one, marked by an unexpected snowstorm or two. I may be mixing my metaphors here; let’s blame it on the ever-eco-conscious OSCAR-WINNING ACTOR Leo DiCaprio. But March is here now, and soon the colder months will be just a pesky, unwelcome memory --- kind of like “The Cobbler” must be for Tom McCarthy.

February 2016

What better way to warm up on a brisk February day than to watch some of the latest book-to-screen adaptations?  For a sinister twist on Jane Austen's classic novel, check out Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a tale of romance, violence and heartbreak.  In this comedic reimagining of Austen's novel,  a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton --- and the dead are coming back to life!

February 2016

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a bestselling zombie novel must be in want of a silver screen adaptation. So it’s no surprise that Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, based on Seth Grahame-Smith’s Frankenstein of a novel --- which plops hordes of the walking dead into the Austen classic --- is now in theaters. More respectable reviewers are saying this one is as soulless as the Bennet sisters’ antagonists, but I say leave your braaaains at the door and enjoy some good February fun!

January 2016

We're glad it's not summer because this month's Books on Screen options are going to leave you wanting to stay as far from the waves as possible. First there's The Finest Hours, the remake of the book of the same name by Michael J. Tougias and Casey Sherman, which follows members of the Coast Guard attempting to save 30 sailors in one of the worst storms in New England's history.

January 2016

Happy New Year, Books on Screen lovers! Hopefully, your resolutions include getting better at managing your expectations; considering the mediocre crop of movies this month, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to flex those fledgling cognitive muscles.

December 2015

Holiday shopping can be stressful, right? Finding the perfect gift for your mom, dad, grandma, that classmate you got as your Secret Santa but you don't know at all...the list goes on. Why not give yourself a break between stores by heading to the movie theater?

December 2015

Season’s greetings, Books on Screen lovers! If you’re at all worried about appearances when Santa comes to town, it might be best to avoid the dim and dismal movies that hit theaters this month. The entertainment itself is brilliant, but I bet there will be plenty of crying and pouting in theaters nationwide.

November 2015

Turns out, death and taxes aren’t the only certain things in the world: We can now count on an Amazon pilot dump every six months or so. Ben Franklin may have discovered electricity and penned an early draft of Celine Dion’s favorite idiom, but even he could not see this coming. Hang on to your bifocals; we're about to dive headfirst into November's Books on Screen!
