Books on Screen

Each month, our Books on Screen feature spotlights movies, television shows, miniseries and specials that are based on books of various genres --- including novels, memoirs, comics, children's books, short stories and poetry --- along with the latest DVD releases.

August 2013

You've been waiting and now it's finally here! Hitting theaters this August, Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, the movie adaptation of Rick Riordan's THE SEA OF MONSTERS, follows Percy Jackson and his friends as they go on a journey to the Seas of Monsters to retrieve the Golden Fleece and save Camp Half-Blood.

August 2013

Just as the summer begins to cool down (and wind down, unfortunately), the theater heats up with a bunch of great movies you've been waiting for! The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters, anyone? Yup! They're finally in theaters this month, along with the adaptations of Tim Tharp's THE SPECTACULAR NOW and KICK-ASS 2 by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.

August 2013

It seems we made it through the heat of July and will be rewarded with a cooler August (although you won't catch me holding my slightly-less-scorching breath). But while things are cooling down offscreen, we can look forward to some hot end-of-summer releases this month --- and I'm not just talking about the Bret Easton Ellis-penned The Canyons.

July 2013

Beat the heat, and head over to an air-conditioned movie theater this July to see The Smurfs 2! This movie sequel features the voice of Neil Patrick Harris (yay!) and of course, those little blue creatures that you absolutely adore. Will the evil wizard Gargamel succeed in harnessing the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence?

July 2013

If you can't stand the heat this July, head to your local movie theater to take advantage of the air conditioning and to check out these movie adaptations. New to theaters this month is The Lone Ranger, featuring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in a Western action adventure, and The Smurfs 2, with the voice of Neil Patrick Harris, among others, becoming those little blue characters you love. If you'd rather stay at home, The Host and Admission are coming out on DVD and BlueRay in July, too.

July 2013

July is the month when things really start to heat up. So stop pounding that scorching hot pavement and get into your local movie theater to enjoy some AC and books on screen!

The Lone Ranger is adventure-packed family fare, starring the ever-wackier Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. If you still haven’t forgiven Hammer for his double-trouble role as the cringe-inducingly smarmy Winklevoss twins in The Social Network, then check out Red 2 instead. This much-anticipated sequel picks up right where our all-star ensemble cast left off, and promises more action, entertainment and laughs than the first. All you sci-fi enthusiasts out there, we haven’t forgotten you! Hugh Jackman puts his singing and dancing on hold and returns this summer as The Wolverine --- proving once again the age-old Hollywood adage: If the franchise ain’t broke…

June 2013

Epic, which follows a teenage girl as she finds herself magically transported into a microscopic universe, is still in theaters for you to enjoy. And now Oz: The Great and Powerful is out on DVD June 11th!

June 2013

With summer blossoming before us, now is the time to sit back, relax, and enjoy all the wonderful movies, TV shows and DVDs that will be coming your way in June. World War Z starring Brad Pitt is a must-see, and the book on which it is based is a hot and enticing read. Meanwhile, Shakespeare's classic comedy is given a contemporary spin in Joss Whedon's feature film, Much Ado About Nothing. Perhaps Man of Steel will be enough entertainment this month, but so could the classic comics that serve as the movie’s inspiration.

Judy Blume, author of Tiger Eyes

The movie adaptation of Judy Blume's TIGER EYES, directed by her son, is out June 7th for a limited time in select theaters but is also on iTunes and other online outlets. And following up The Great Gatsby, a modern adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing hits theaters this month, keeping English teachers happy and perhaps helping you clarify exactly what Shakespeare is saying.

May 2013

I'm sure you have all been properly prepped by your English teachers for the release of The Great Gatsby this month! Excited??? But don't forget the other movies out in theaters and on DVD in May, including Epic, Beautiful Creatures and Struck by Lightning.
