Books on Screen

Each month, our Books on Screen feature spotlights movies, television shows, miniseries and specials that are based on books of various genres --- including novels, memoirs, comics, children's books, short stories and poetry --- along with the latest DVD releases.

May 2013

We all know that The Great Gatsby will be coming to theaters this month. But there are a number of other films releasing in May that you may want to check out, including Iron Man 3, The Iceman, Epic and Shadow Dancer. If you want to stay inside and need some options for TV viewing, try Behind the Candelabra, which premieres May 26th on HBO, or pop in a DVD of Jack Reacher, Safe Haven, or Cloud Atlas.

April and May 2013

Did you enjoy The Rise of the Guardians? On May 24th, another movie based on a book by William Joyce will hit theaters. Epic follows a teenage girl as she finds herself magically transported into a microscopic universe. How would YOU feel if you were shrunked to be bug-sized?

April 2013

With winter weather finally showing signs of letting up and spring firmly taking charge, April will be a good month to stay outside a little longer to stargaze. However, the night sky isn't the only place you're going to see stars this month. With movies such as The Company You Keep, Pain & Gain and The Reluctant Fundamentalist featuring plenty of big names, including Robert Redford, Susan Sarandon, Mark Wahlberg and Kate Hudson, you will see plenty of stars on the silver screen, too.

March 2013

Coming off the heels of the Oscars, we present to you the book-to-screen adaptations that will be making their way to a theater (or a living room) near you in March. Check out former Oscar host James Franco, who plays the Wizard of Oz as he first arrives at the Land of Oz in Oz: The Great and Powerful. In Admission, Tina Fey acts out your greatest college admission fears. Meanwhile, "Game of Thrones" returns for a third season on March 31st. And it's a big month for Stephenie Meyer fans, as the long-awaited adaptation of THE HOST comes to the big screen at the end of the month, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 is now out on DVD.

February 2013

Not sure about what to do on Valentine's Day? Head to the cinema! Beautiful Creatures, out on Februrary 14th, follows Ethan Wate as he meets the mysterious Lena Duchannes and together, they uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their small Southern town. If you're looking for something a little more love-driven, there's always the next Nicholas Sparks adaptation with Safe Haven.

February 2013

It’s February, and love is in the air! Whether you are looking for a night out and a quirky romance like Warm Bodies, a chick flick to watch with friends like Safe Haven, or television shows like "Monday Mornings" and  “Parade’s End” to curl up with and enjoy while having some “me” time, there is an exciting book adaptation on a movie or TV screen near you.

January 2013

It's cold outside, and what better time to snuggle up with a book? Or, perhaps, a movie based on a book. As we all know, January is an exciting time in Tinseltown --- the Golden Globe Awards are given out and Oscar nominations are announced. Lots of book adaptations have been recognized by the Academy this year, including big screen versions of Yann Martel's LIFE OF PI, Doris Kearns Goodwin's TEAM OF RIVALS, Victor Hugo's LES MISERABLES, and Matthew Quick’s SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK. But this month also brings a new crop of film and TV releases with print origins. Among them are Gangster Squad, “The Carrie Diaries,” John Dies at the End, and Parker, based on a character made famous by Donald E. Westlake when he wrote as “Richard Stark.”

January 2013

Glee star Chris Colfer's movie adaptation of his own book, STRUCK BY LIGHTNING: The Carson Phillips Journal, is out this month. Struck by Lightning is about a high school senior's desperate ploy to blackmail the popular kids into writing for his literary magazine. The CW spin-off of Sex and the City, The Carrie Diaries, is also out. This TV series is based on Candace Bushnell's THE CARRIE DIARIES.

December 2012

The first of three movies to adapt J.R.R. Tolkien's THE HOBBIT, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey follows Bibo Baggins as he is thrust into adventure. It is not common for a hobbit to go on an adventure, but when Gandolf the Grey comes over unannounced --- and with a company of thirteen dwarves --- Biblo embarks on a journey that will change life as he knows it.

November 2012

Just in time to start off the holidays, The Rise of the Guardians comes to theaters to delight and thrill! In this computer animated film based on the Guardians of Childhood series by William Joyce, the Immortal Guardians --- Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and the Sandman --- ask Jack Frost to help them defeat the evil spirit, Pitch. Will they be able to defeat the Nightmare King?
