David Rosenfelt’s latest book should come with a warning: Reading it most likely will cause you to have a new, can’t-miss series on your hands. Rosenfelt’s Andy Carpenter novels are beloved by readers who enjoy the clever whodunits, the canines and the protagonist’s self-deprecating humor. The same can be said for his spinoff series about a group of private investigators known as the K Team, the third installment of which is the newly released CITIZEN K-9. Read More

I suppose that one can’t be too hard on Edward “Plorn” Dickens. Setting aside the ridiculous nickname, there are the basic facts of his biography --- born the youngest son of Charles Dickens, suffered through Victorian schooling, shipped off at the tender age of 15 to Australia to learn the trade of sheep husbandry in the remote barrens of New South Wales. So, all right, there’s that. Read More

Edward Dickens, the 10th child of England’s most famous author Charles Dickens, has consistently let his parents down. Unable to apply himself at school and adrift in life, the teenaged boy is sent to Australia in the hopes that he can make something of himself --- or at least fail out of the public eye. He soon finds himself in the remote Outback, surrounded by Aboriginals, colonials, ex-convicts, ex-soldiers and very few women. Determined to prove to his parents and, more importantly, himself that he can succeed in this vast and unfamiliar wilderness, Edward works hard at his new life amidst various livestock, bushrangers, shifty stock agents and frontier battles.

About the Book

The award-winning author of modern classics such as SCHINDLER'S LIST and NAPOLEON'S LAST ISLAND is at his triumphant best with this “engrossing and transporting” (Financial Times) novel about the adventures of Charles Dickens’ son in the Australian Outback during the 1860s.

By reimagining the tale of a fascinating yet little-known figure in history, this “roguishly tender coming-of-age story” (Booklist) offers penetrating insights into Colonialism and the fate of Australia’s indigenous people, and a wonderfully intimate portrait of Charles Dickens, as seen through the eyes of his son.

Franny Doyle has been laid off from her (admittedly mediocre) job, the subway doors ripped her favorite silk dress to ruins, and now she’s flashed her unmentionables to half of lower Manhattan. On the plus side, a dashing stranger came to her rescue with his (Gucci!) suit jacket. On the not-so-plus side, he can’t get away from her fast enough. Worse yet? Someone posted their (entirely not) meet-cute online. Suddenly Franny and Hayes Montgomery III are the newest social media sensation. They couldn’t be a more disastrous match. Yet somehow, they keep running into each other --- and much to their surprise, they enjoy each other’s company. A lot. But when Franny’s whole world is turned upside down (again!), can she find the courage to trust in herself and finally have the life --- and love --- she’s always wanted?

They came to Paris to be seen. They came for the haute couture, the food and the arts. Grand dukes, princesses, generals and every imaginable luminary of Imperial Russia made Paris part of their lives during the Belle Époque. They lived on massive estates and in sumptuous Parisian apartments. They held salons and great feasts. They squandered enormous sums on their hedonistic adventures with a blind eye to the future. As they hurtled towards the Great War, a visiting Russian diplomat mused, “Hurry up. Read More

Paris always has been a city of cultural excellence, fine wine and food, and the latest fashions. But it also has been a place of refuge for those fleeing persecution, never more so than before and after the Russian Revolution and the fall of the Romanov dynasty. For years, Russian aristocrats had enjoyed all that Belle Époque Paris had to offer, spending lavishly when they visited. It was a place of artistic experimentation, such as Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. But the brutality of the Bolshevik takeover forced Russians of all types to flee their homeland. About the Book

From Helen Rappaport, the New York Times bestselling author of THE ROMANOV SISTERS comes AFTER THE ROMANOVS, the story of the Russian aristocrats, artists and intellectuals who sought freedom and refuge in the City of Light.

But the brutality of the Bolshevik takeover forced Russians of all types to flee their homeland, sometimes leaving with only the clothes on their backs.

Arriving in Paris, former princes could be seen driving taxicabs, while their wives who could sew worked for the fashion houses, their unique Russian style serving as inspiration for designers like Coco Chanel. Talented intellectuals, artists, poets, philosophers and writers struggled in exile, eking out a living at menial jobs. Some, like Bunin, Chagall and Stravinsky, encountered great success in the same Paris that welcomed Americans like Fitzgerald and Hemingway. Political activists sought to overthrow the Bolshevik regime from afar, while double agents from both sides plotted espionage and assassination. Others became trapped in a cycle of poverty and their all-consuming homesickness for Russia, the homeland they had been forced to abandon.

This is their story.

About the Book

“THE SECRET HISTORY meets THE PRICE OF SALT” (Vogue) in this “equal parts dangerous and delicious” (Entertainment Weekly) novel about queer desire, religious zealotry and the hunger for transcendence among the members of a cultic chapel choir at a Maine boarding school --- and the ambitious, terrifyingly charismatic girl that rules over them.

When shy, sensitive Laura Stearns arrives at St. Dunstan’s Academy in Maine, she dreams that life there will echo her favorite novel, All Before Them, the sole surviving piece of writing by Byronic “prep school prophet” (and St. Dunstan’s alum) Sebastian Webster, who died at 19, fighting in the Spanish Civil War. She soon finds the intensity she is looking for among the insular, Webster-worshipping members of the school’s chapel choir, which is presided over by the charismatic, neurotic, overachiever Virginia Strauss. Virginia is as fanatical about her newfound Christian faith as she is about the miles she runs every morning before dawn. She expects nothing short of perfection from herself --- and from the members of the choir.

Virginia inducts the besotted Laura into a world of transcendent music and arcane ritual, illicit cliff-diving and midnight crypt visits --- a world that, like Webster’s novels, finally seems to Laura to be full of meaning. But when a new school chaplain challenges Virginia’s hold on the “family” she has created, and Virginia’s efforts to wield her power become increasingly dangerous, Laura must decide how far she will let her devotion to Virginia go.

THE WORLD CANNOT GIVE is a “hypnotic and intense” (Shondaland) meditation on the power, and danger, of wanting more from the world.

As I write this, we have devoured corned beef to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. I know it is not true Irish food, but we enjoy it the one time of year that we make it! We tried two new kinds of Irish soda bread, and I did not like either. Next year, I am going to try my friend’s recipe for her mom’s BEST Irish soda bread! And we need to remember to make TWO corned beefs since the best part is sandwiches on rye bread. We have no leftovers!
