My first introduction to Louise Candlish’s fiction was her 2018 novel, OUR HOUSE. At the time, I remember being impressed and consistently set on edge by her innovative narrative techniques, which played with chronology, perspective and form in ways that kept readers guessing. So I was eager to pick up her latest book, THE HEIGHTS, which was inspired, at least in part, by the movie Vertigo and promised --- based on the opening pages alone --- to offer more of the same intriguing experiments with narrative structure. The Heights is a tall, slender apartment building among warehouses in London. Its roof terrace is so discreet, you wouldn’t know it existed if you weren’t standing at the window of the flat directly opposite. But you are. And that’s when you see a man up there --- a man you’d recognize anywhere. He may be older now, but it’s definitely him. But that can’t be because he’s been dead for over two years. You know this for a fact. Because you’re the one who killed him.

About the Book

The author of the “masterfully plotted, compulsive page-turner” (The Guardian) OUR HOUSE takes you on a haunting and nail-biting journey of tragedy and revenge.

With Louise Candlish’s signature dark and twisty prose, THE HEIGHTS shows “the ferocity of maternal love” (Hannah Beckerman, author of IF ONLY I COULD TELL YOU). “This cleverly constructed novel will keep readers enthralled until the last page” (Publishers Weekly, starred).

About the Book

Ellen Alpsten's stunning novel, THE TSARINA'S DAUGHTER, is the dramatic story of Elizabeth, daughter of Catherine I and Peter the Great, who ruled Russia during an extraordinary life marked by love, danger, passion and scandal.

As friends turn to foe in the dangerous atmosphere of the Court, the princess must fear for her freedom and her life. Fate deals her blow after blow, and even loving her becomes a crime that warrants cruel torture and capital punishment: Elizabeth matures from suffering victim to strong and savvy survivor. But only her true love and their burning passion finally help her become who she is. When the Imperial Crown is left to an infant Tsarevich, Elizabeth finds herself in mortal danger and must confront a terrible dilemma --- seize the reins of power and harm an innocent child, or find herself following in the footsteps of her murdered brother.

Hidden behind a gorgeous, wildly decadent façade, the Russian Imperial Court is a viper’s den of intrigue and ambition. Only a woman possessed of boundless courage and cunning can prove herself worthy to sit on the throne of Peter the Great.

I think the spring weather coming and going (it’s 70 degrees, now it’s 30, now it’s 65 and now there are snow flurries) has been making me a bit crazy. So when I saw an advance copy of THE LIFEGUARDS by Amanda Eyre Ward on my shelf, I decided to move right ahead to summer! I loved Amanda's previous book, THE JETSETTERS, and once again I plunged (pun intended) right into the story. The setting is Austin, Texas. One night, three moms are hanging out together as they are wont to do, sipping margaritas and catching up on life. Their three sons are lifeguards; the moms feel they have raised them well, and life is good. But then the boys come home on their bicycles late one night with haunted looks on their faces. What happened? Were they involved? Suddenly, this very cozy group is looking to be anything but. And everyone has their own point of view.
