I found NOVICE by Taran Matharu to be a breath fresh air. The book is about a boy named Fletcher who runs away from his hometown because of a crime he committed. Along the way, he discovers he has magical powers and can summon a demon. He is then gets sent to an academy for summoners where he learns how to control his abilities. The plotline is somewhat slow moving, but there is still lots of action and political intrigue.

SAINT ANYTHING is a complicated book to review. After multiple attempts of trying to liken reading it to eating a brownie --- crunchy on the inside but deliciously soft and sweet at its center --- I gave up.

Sydney has always felt invisible. She's grown accustomed to her brother, Peyton, being the focus of the family’s attention and, lately, concern. Peyton is handsome and charismatic, but seems bent on self-destruction. Now, after a drunk-driving accident that crippled a boy, Peyton’s serving some serious jail time, and Sydney is on her own, questioning her place in the family and the world.

Then she meets the Chatham family. Drawn into their warm, chaotic circle, Sydney experiences unquestioning acceptance for the first time. There’s effervescent Layla, who constantly falls for the wrong guy, Rosie, who’s had her own fall from grace, and Mrs. Chatham, who even though ailing is the heart of the family. But it’s with older brother Mac --- quiet, watchful, and protective --- that Sydney finally feels seen, really seen, at last.

SAINT ANYTHING is Sarah Dessen’s deepest and most psychologically probing novel yet.

June 28, 1969 earmarks an unprecedented time in American history, sandwiched between the struggles and triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement and Equal Rights for women. The LGBT community --- which was simply known as Gays, back then --- got sick and tired of their oppressive societal and legal environs and finally fought back. What began as a supposed routine police raid that was actually a clandestine plan to clear out an unwelcome aspect of society from a Mafia-run bar turned into a pivotal point in the history of the American Gay Rights Movement:  The Stonewall Riots.

Teaser

In 1969 being gay in the United States was a criminal offense. It meant living a closeted life or surviving on the fringes of society. People went to jail, lost jobs, and were disowned by their families for being gay. Most doctors considered homosexuality a mental illness. There were few safe havens. The Stonewall Inn, a Mafia-run, filthy, overpriced bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village, was one of them.

About the Book

That’s the Stonewall.
The Stonewall Inn.
Pay attention.
History walks through that door.

The Stonewall Inn, a Mafia-run, filthy, overpriced bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village, was one of them.

Police raids on gay bars happened regularly in this era. But one hot June night, when cops pounded on the door of the Stonewall, almost nothing went as planned. Tensions were high. The crowd refused to go away. Anger and frustration boiled over.

The raid became a riot.

The riot became a catalyst.

The catalyst triggered an explosive demand for gay rights.

Ann Bausum’s riveting exploration of the Stonewall Riots and the national Gay Rights movement that followed is eye-opening, unflinching, and inspiring.
