Lightning in a Mirror

With LIGHTNING IN A MIRROR, Jayne Ann Krentz wraps up her Fogg Lake trilogy. This final installment in her popular paranormal suspense series is a thrilling adventure with hints of a burgeoning romance.

Harlan Rancourt, head of the Agency for the Investigation of Atypical Phenomenon, has a complicated past. He was once considered the heir-apparent of a powerful paranormal research organization called the Foundation that worked on the Bluestone Project and Vortex. There’s been some chatter in the paranormal underworld about Vortex, so he now seeks help from the Foundation before something even more disastrous happens.

Years earlier, an explosion in a secret lab released paranormal gases near the town of Fogg Lake, awakening psychic talents and forever changing the DNA of the residents and their offspring.

While at the offices, Harlan notices a painting of an oracle in what looks to be the lab. Thinking the artwork might provide information about where Vortex is, he investigates further. He learns of a young woman from Fogg Lake who runs a psychic investigation firm in Seattle and has contracts with the Foundation. She is well known for reading people’s auras, but Harlan comes to believe that she also has inherited the oracle trait. When he learns that her grandmother was the artist who created the painting, he suspects she may hold the key to finding the lab.

Olivia LeClair is looking for love through speed-dating, but only half-heartedly. She asks every prospect the same question at the start of each encounter: If I disappeared tomorrow, would you walk through hell to find me? No wonder they’re in such a hurry to leave when the session is over. But then someone unexpectedly answers her question with a confident “yes,” and Olivia is intrigued enough to scan his aura. But he’s harder to read than he should be. Who is this man? Is he what he seems to be? Curious, she agrees to spend more time with him. As they walk to dinner, her new friend Harlan realizes they’re being followed. Is she in danger? From whom? And why?

When Harlan reveals that he sought her out to ask if she truly is an oracle, Olivia is unnerved. As far as she knows, she is not. But when he offers to help her track down her mother’s killer, she agrees. Together, they return to Fogg Lake to visit her mother’s house, hoping to find clues to Vortex's location. When they discover that it’s on an island somewhere in the Pacific Northwest, Harlan returns to the Foundation to get more information.

Henchmen who have been following them kidnap Olivia and take her to the lab. Olivia trusts that Harlan will find her, but there are nefarious happenings here, and she soon realizes she will need everything she has to stop it. Harlan may be too late.

Jayne Ann Krentz is a master of inventive worldbuilding and has written a fascinating, magical and dazzling story. Readers will be drawn into a complex paranormal world with smart, appealing multigenerational characters who dare to rise to the challenges and deliver sharp dialogue. With its clever blend of intrigue and romance that teases both the mind and the emotions, this multifaceted novel is worth a second read.
