Daddy's Gone a Hunting

Mary Higgins Clark, the mistress of suspense, offers a multi-layered, highly suspenseful mystery in DADDY’S GONE A HUNTING. The story begins on November 14th at 4am, when Gus Schmidt is getting ready to meet Kate Connelly at her father’s furniture and antique museum factory. Gus was forced into retirement and carries a big grudge. Why is Kate so eager to meet him at this hour of the morning in the Long Island City facility? As the two make their way into the dark factory, it suddenly blows up, killing Gus and putting Kate in a coma.

"Mary Higgins Clark has penned yet another mystery that will keep her at the top of the suspense writers list for a very long time.... DADDY’S GONE A HUNTING will chill readers as secrets are revealed, and people’s masks are torn off. This one is not to be missed."

Kate is a CPA for one of the largest financial corporations in the country. Who would possibly want to hurt her or Gus? For that matter, who would want to destroy the famous factory and museum that was full of priceless antiques? In addition to the factory, several million dollars was tied up in the land upon which the facility stands. Doug Connelly, the girls’ father, was losing money and trying to sell the land --- but was not happy with the deals he was offered. So he kept waiting for a better bid. At first, he didn’t care about the explosion because he thought he would collect the insurance money. But when the fire marshal determined that arson was the reason for the explosion, no insurance company would pay.

Kate’s sister, Hannah, is a clothing designer who has just been given the honor of getting her own label. But the fact that Kate is in a coma and her father is acting strangely interfere with Hannah’s work and life. She spends hours at the hospital by Kate’s bedside trying to talk to her sister, believing that Kate can hear her even if she cannot respond.

In the meantime, other characters make important appearances that keep the story racing at breakneck speed. A homeless man is found to have been living in a junked van on the premises and is thought to be the one who set the fire. In addition, a picture of a family is recovered among the junk he has collected over the years. Who is this man? What is his place in the suspenseful plot? Does he have anything to do with a few young girls who have disappeared without a trace over the years?

Mary Higgins Clark has penned yet another mystery that will keep her at the top of the suspense writers list for a very long time. As the narrative unfolds and more questions than answers arise, the “players” take center stage, and readers will find themselves catching the layers of clues left for them. Slowly, secrets decades old eke into the filament of the story. More than one family is involved, and more than one family member plays a bad but pertinent role in the narrative. Past and present merge in a mélange of kaleidoscopic confusion as the characters begin to believe that they are being investigated by the police and fire marshals.

DADDY’S GONE A HUNTING will chill readers as secrets are revealed, and people’s masks are torn off. This one is not to be missed.
