I am tapping out this newsletter a couple of days early this week as by the time it arrives I will be in Chicago at the annual Book Expo America Conference. Nine years ago I attended this event for the first time when we were planning Bookreporter.com. I spent the first hour telling publishers and authors about a great new site we were launching on the Internet about books with a goal to connect readers and authors. (Keep in mind that this was about six months after Amazon first launched.) The more I outlined our plans, the more that people looked at me like I needed to be hauled away in a straitjacket for having a really looney idea. Books were sold in stores. Authors appeared and read in stores. What was I talking about? I called my business partner, told him I was going to collect as many catalogs (these showcase the books for the upcoming season) as I could and then I was going to the movies since it was clear that no one was going to take us seriously till we were live.

I read a quote the other day in a secular novel called THE RULE OF FOUR that made me think about dads and their relationships with their sons:

"A son is the promise that time makes to a man, the guarantee every father receives that whatever he holds dear will someday be considered foolish, and that the person he loves best in the world will misunderstand him." It's a heavy thought, but as many of us know the relationship between a father and his son can be as complicated as that between a mother and her daughter. Father's Day is not only a time to celebrate being a dad, but also to acknowledge its ups and downs.

Happy Father's Day to all of our Faithful Reader dads.

Many of you read THE NOTEBOOK when it came out in 1996 (coincidentally the same year Bookreporter.com was founded). Over the years you have asked about when the movie of the book is coming out. The answer: June 25th. I went to a screening a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. There were moments I was trying to swallow the lump in my throat and yes, I wiped away some tears; there were others when I was laughing --- a lot. It's very nicely done and I do not think fans of the book will be disappointed. For those of you who have read the book, you may want to do a quick re-read in anticipation of the movie. If you are in a book club, you may want to schedule a book/movie meeting! Early next week we will be sharing news with you about advance screening opportunities in some major cities --- and a contest. Watch your mailboxes for details.
