Whether THE LONG AND FARAWAY GONE is a classic of the thriller genre or of fiction period is an issue that is far above my pay grade and may not be wholly resolved until a time when I’m not here to know. All that I can tell you is that this is one of those rare novels in which you can feel the earth shift, softly and almost imperceptibly at first, then more noticeably and incessantly as you are reading it. By the end, everything around you feels just a bit different. Read More

About the Book
With the compelling narrative tension and psychological complexity of the works of Laura Lippman, Dennis Lehane, Kate Atkinson, and Michael Connelly, Edgar Award-nominee Lou Berney’s THE LONG AND FARAWAY GONE is a smart, fiercely compassionate crime story that explores the mysteries of memory and the impact of violence on survivors --- and the lengths they will go to find the painful truth of the events that scarred their lives.
In the summer of 1986, two tragedies rocked Oklahoma City. Six movie-theater employees were killed in an armed robbery, while one inexplicably survived. Then, a teenage girl vanished from the annual State Fair. Neither crime was ever solved.
Twenty-five years later, the reverberations of those unsolved cases quietly echo through survivors’ lives. A private investigator in Vegas, Wyatt’s latest inquiry takes him back to a past he’s tried to escape --- and drags him deeper into the harrowing mystery of the movie house robbery that left six of his friends dead.
Like Wyatt, Julianna struggles with the past --- with the day her beautiful older sister Genevieve disappeared. When Julianna discovers that one of the original suspects has resurfaced, she’ll stop at nothing to find answers.
As fate brings these damaged souls together, their obsessive quests spark sexual currents neither can resist. But will their shared passion and obsession heal them, or push them closer to the edge? Even if they find the truth, will it help them understand what happened, that long and faraway gone summer? Will it set them free --- or ultimately destroy them?

EMPIRE isn’t just for young people. John Connolly’s reputation across multiple genres for readers of many ages precedes him. The Charlie Parker series straddles a no-man’s land of mystery, thriller and horror, while his Samuel Johnson fantasy trilogy garnered an audience that ranged far beyond that of the middle-school readers at which it was ostensibly aimed. Kenny Porpora’s book, THE AUTUMN BALLOON, is a bitter pill to swallow, especially once you remember that the book is a memoir --- something that must have been much more bitter to experience. The childhood Porpora describes was one lived at a level others shudder to consider --- an alcoholic and abusive mother, a father too old and incompetent to take responsibility for his kids, a family left brittle by the members who died from overdoses with stunning regularity over the years, and a society riddled with holes that children easily slip through. Kenny Porpora's memoir is the story of a deeply dysfunctional but loving family, and follows his life from the chaos of his youth to his triumphs in the Ivy League. At times darkly comic, at times elegiac, THE AUTUMN BALLOON is a beautifully written testament to the irreplaceable bonds of family, even under the most trying circumstances.

About the Book
Every autumn, Kenny Porpora would watch his heartbroken mother scribble messages on balloons and release them into the sky above Long Island, one for each family member they'd lost to addiction. As the number of balloons grew, his mother fell deeper into alcoholism, drinking away her sorrows every night in front of the television, where her love of Regis Philbin provided a respite from the sadness around her.
When their house was foreclosed upon, Kenny's mother absconded with him and his beloved dog and fled for the Arizona desert, joining her heroin-addicted brother on a quixotic search for a better life. What followed was an outlaw adolescence spent in constant upheaval surrounded by bizarre characters and drug-addicted souls.
In the wake of unspeakable loss, Kenny convinced a college to take a chance on him, and turned to the mentors, writers, and poets he found to rebuild the family he lost, and eventually graduated from the Ivy League with a new life.

At times darkly comic, at times elegiac, THE AUTUMN BALLOON is a beautifully written testament to the irreplaceable bonds of family, even under the most trying circumstances, and one that marks the debut of an exciting new writer.

I think it’s safe to say that we are all fed up with the weather. The other night, my commute home from the city was a three-hour ordeal that left me wrung out. I feel like plans are made and changed at such a rapid-fire pace that my head is spinning. I am so glad that all I need is an Internet connection for me to work!

About the BookMaisie Dobbs returns in a powerful story of political intrigue and personal tragedy: A brutal murder in the British garrison town of Gibraltar leads the investigator into a web of lies, deceit and danger. Spring 1937. In the four years since she left England, Maisie Dobbs has experienced love, contentment, stability --- and the deepest tragedy a woman can endure. Now, all she wants is the peace she believes she might find by returning to India. But her sojourn in the hills of Darjeeling is cut short when her stepmother summons her home to England: Her aging father, Frankie Dobbs, is not getting any younger. On a ship bound for England, Maisie realizes she isn’t ready to return. Against the wishes of the captain who warns her, “You will be alone in a most dangerous place,” she disembarks in Gibraltar. Though she is on her own, Maisie is far from alone: The British garrison town is teeming with refugees fleeing a brutal civil war across the border in Spain. And the danger is very real. Days after Maisie’s arrival, a photographer and member of Gibraltar’s Sephardic Jewish community, Sebastian Babayoff, is murdered, and Maisie becomes entangled in the case, drawing the attention of the British Secret Service. Under the suspicious eye of a British agent, Maisie is pulled deeper into political intrigue on “the Rock” --- arguably Britain’s most important strategic territory --- and renews an uneasy acquaintance in the process. At a crossroads between her past and her future, Maisie must choose a direction, knowing that England is, for her, an equally dangerous place, but in quite a different way. |
