With the publication of four novels --- THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, YOU DON'T LOVE ME YET, CHRONIC CITY and DISSIDENT GARDENS --- in fewer than 12 years, Jonathan Lethem clearly has been hard at work. But it's been more than a decade since his last story collection, MEN AND CARTOONS, was published. LUCKY ALAN fills that gap with a blend of Lethem's off-kilter humor and more serious fare. Read More

Jonathan Lethem’s third collection of stories uncovers a father’s nervous breakdown at SeaWorld; a foundling child rescued from the woods during a blizzard; a political prisoner in a hole in a Brooklyn street; and a crumbling, haunted “blog” on a seaside cliff. As in his novels, Lethem finds the uncanny lurking in the mundane, the irrational self-defeat seeping through our upstanding pursuits, and the tragic undertow of the absurd world(s) in which we live.

About the Book
A father tries to stave off a nervous breakdown when a family trip to SeaWorld shades into the sinister; a porn critic discovers that, despite his best intentions, his reputation --- not to mention the stacks of smut lining his apartment --- precedes him; an out-of-work avant-garde stage director begins to test his limits in the theater of life; desperate forgotten comic book characters find themselves suddenly stranded on a desert island.
With his celebrated wit and invention, Lethem brilliantly transforms the real into the surreal, uncovering the absurdity always lurking in the mundane, the twin forces of humor and tragedy that bracket experience, and the lasting desire --- even in the face of all that goes awry --- for human connection.

About the Book
From the PEN/Faulkner finalist and critically acclaimed author of HOLD IT 'TIL IT HURTS comes a dark and socially provocative Southern-fried comedy about four UC Berkeley students who stage a dramatic protest during a Civil War reenactment --- a fierce, funny, tragic work from a bold new writer.
Welcome to Braggsville. The City that Love Built in the Heart of Georgia. Population 712
Born and raised in the heart of old Dixie, D’aron Davenport finds himself in unfamiliar territory his freshman year at UC Berkeley. Two thousand miles and a world away from his childhood, he is a small-town fish floundering in the depths of a large, hyper-liberal pond. Caught between the prosaic values of his rural hometown and the intellectualized multicultural cosmopolitanism of Berzerkeley, the 19-year-old white kid is uncertain about his place until one disastrous party brings him three idiosyncratic best friends: Louis, a “kung-fu comedian" from California; Candice, an earnest do-gooder claiming Native roots from Iowa; and Charlie, an introspective inner-city black teen from Chicago. They dub themselves the “4 Little Indians.”
But everything changes in the group’s alternative history class, when D’aron lets slip that his hometown hosts an annual Civil War reenactment, recently rebranded “Patriot Days.” His announcement is met with righteous indignation, and inspires Candice to suggest a “performative intervention” to protest the reenactment. Armed with youthful self-importance, makeshift slave costumes, righteous zeal, and their own misguided ideas about the South, the 4 Little Indians descend on Braggsville. Their journey through backwoods churches, backroom politics, Waffle Houses, and drunken family barbecues is uproarious to start, but will have devastating consequences.
With the keen wit of BILLY LYNN'S LONG HALFTIME WALK and the deft argot of THE BRIEF WONDROUS LIFE OF OSCAR WAO, T. Geronimo Johnson has written an astonishing, razor-sharp satire. Using a panoply of styles and tones, from tragicomic to Southern Gothic, he skewers issues of class, race, intellectual and political chauvinism, Obamaism, social media and much more.
A literary coming-of-age novel for a new generation, written with tremendous social insight and a unique, generous heart, WELCOME TO BRAGGSVILLE reminds us of the promise and perils of youthful exuberance, while painting an indelible portrait of contemporary America.

About the Book
In ROOSEVELT AND STALIN, Susan Butler tells the story of how the leader of the capitalist world and the leader of the Communist world became more than allies of convenience during World War II. They shared the same outlook for the postwar world, and formed an uneasy yet deep friendship, shaping the global stage from the war to the decades leading up to and into the new century. The book makes clear that Roosevelt worked hard to win Stalin over, by always holding out the promise that Roosevelt’s own ideas were the best hope for the future peace and security of Russia. Stalin, however, was initially unconvinced that Roosevelt’s planned world organization, even with police powers, would be strong enough to keep Germany from starting a new war. In the end we see how Stalin’s opinion of Roosevelt evolved and how he began to view FDR as the key to peace. ROOSEVELT AND STALIN is a revelatory portrait of this crucial, geopolitical partnership.

There are two elements that CANARY has going for it from the jump. Both are contained on the cover. I know, I know, you don’t judge a book that way. But the cover of this striking, edgy crime novel --- it’s a bright yellow background with a silhouette of a canary, upside down, caught in some nasty-looking crosshairs --- immediately attracts attention. The other element is Duane Swierczynski’s name on the cover. Those who have read his work know; those who haven’t should. Read More
