Robert Knott’s take on the late Robert B. Parker’s Cole and Hitch characters has quickly and steadily drilled its way onto my “most anticipated” book list. There has been a revival of the Western genre in popular fiction recently, and this fine historical series, which features the pairing of the laconic and taciturn US Territorial Marshals, has been first rate since its conception right through to Knott’s takeover. Territorial marshals Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch figured things had finally settled down in Appaloosa when Boston Bill Black’s murder charge was dropped. But all that changed when Augustus Noble Driggs was transferred to a stateside penitentiary just across the border from Mexico. In a haunting twist of fate, Driggs and a pack of cold-blooded convicts are suddenly on the loose --- and it’s up to any and all territorial lawmen, including Cole and Hitch, to capture the fugitives and rescue the woman kidnapped during their escape. But nothing is ever quite what it seems with the ever-elusive Driggs. Finally free, he’s quickly on his own furious hunt for a hidden cache of gold and jewels --- and for the men who betrayed him and left him for dead.

About the Book
Itinerant lawmen Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch return to confront an escaped criminal in the grittiest entry yet of the New York Times bestselling series.
Territorial marshals Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch thought things had finally calmed down in Appaloosa when Boston Bill Black’s murder charge was dropped. But all that changed when Augustus Nobel Driggs rolled into town. Square-jawed, handsome, and built like a muscled thoroughbred stallion, Driggs intimidates even his guards from inside his prison cell.
Finally free, he’s quickly on his own furious hunt for a hidden cache of gold and the men who double-crossed him.
With an unlikely and unconventional Yankee detective by their side, Cole and Hitch set off on a massive manhunt. As horses blaze and guns echo deafening reports, Driggs discovers one of the lawmen on his trail is none other than a fellow West Point graduate and one of the very men who betrayed him and left him for dead. Ruthless and willing to leave a bloody path of destruction in his wake, Driggs seeks vengeance at any cost.

About the Book
Scotland Yard’s Ian Rutledge finds himself caught in a twisted web of vengeance, old grievances and secrets that lead back to World War I in the 19th installment of the acclaimed bestselling series.
On the eve of the bloody Battle of the Somme, a group of English officers having a last drink before returning to the Front make a promise to each other: if they survive the battle ahead --- and make it through the war --- they will meet in Paris a year after the fighting ends. They will celebrate their good fortune by racing motorcars they beg, borrow or own from Paris to Nice.
In November 1919, the officers all meet as planned, and though their motorcars are not designed for racing, they set out for Nice. But a serious mishap mars the reunion. In the mountains just north of their destination, two vehicles are nearly run off the road, and one man is badly injured. No one knows --- or will admit to knowing --- which driver was at the wheel of the rogue motorcar.
Back in England one year later, during a heavy rainstorm, a driver loses control on a twisting road and is killed in the crash. Was it an accident due to the hazardous conditions? Or premeditated murder? Is the crash connected in some way to the unfortunate events in the mountains above Nice the year before? The dead driver wasn’t in France --- although the motorcar he drove was. If it was foul play, was it a case of mistaken identity? Or was the dead man the intended victim after all?
Investigating this perplexing case, Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge discovers that the truth is elusive --- and that the villages on the South Downs, where the accident happened, are adept at keeping secrets, frustrating his search. Determined to remain in the shadows this faceless killer is willing to strike again to stop Rutledge from finding him. This time, the victim he chooses is a child, and it will take all of Rutledge’s skill to stop him before an innocent young life is sacrificed.

MAGIC RULES. WE SERVE.
In a darkly fantastical debut set in modern-day Britain, magic users control everything: wealth, politics, power --- and you. If you’re not one of the ultimate one-percenters --- the magical elite --- you owe them 10 years of service. Do those years when you’re old, and you’ll never get through them. Do them young, and you’ll never get over them.
This is the darkly decadent world of GILDED CAGE. In its glittering milieu move the all-powerful Jardines and the everyday Hadleys. The families have only one thing in common: Each has three children. But their destinies entwine when one family enters the service of the other. They will all discover whether any magic is more powerful than the human spirit.

It’s nice to have Brian Freeman back again. His newly published novel, THE NIGHT BIRD, isn’t infused with quite the same gravitas as the books that comprise his successful and readworthy Jonathan Stride and Cab Bolton series, but still has more than enough darkness to go around. Freeman’s considerable writing chops are once again on full display here in this police procedural cum thriller with an inventive and twisting mystery that is a compelling read from beginning to end. If there’s one thing Hollywood enjoys, it’s making movies about other people making movies. That in itself made it perhaps inevitable that Lissa Evans’ novel, THEIR FINEST (originally published in the UK in 2009 as THEIR FINEST HOUR AND A HALF), would eventually be made into a movie, and so it has, releasing in US theaters this spring. The book itself was overdue for US publication, ever since Evans’ CROOKED HEART was published to great acclaim in 2015. Read More

Young copy writer Catrin Cole is drafted into the Ministry of Information to help “write women” into propaganda films --- something that the men aren’t very good at.

It’s all completely fabricated, of course, but what does that matter when the nation’s morale is at stake? Since call-up has stripped the industry of its brightest and best, it is the callow, the jaded and the utterly unsuitable who must make up the numbers: Ambrose Hilliard, third most popular British film-star of 1924; Edith Beadmore, Madame Tussauds wardrobe assistant turned costumier; and Arthur Frith, whose peacetime job as a catering manager has not really prepared him for his sudden, unexpected elevation to Special Military Advisor.
Now in a serious world, in a nation under siege, they must all swallow their mutual distaste, ill-will and mistrust to unite for the common good, for King and Country, and --- in one case --- for better or worse.

Her heroine, Unar, resides on the uppermost level, called Canopy, and serves the fertility goddess Audblayin. In doing so, she turns Canopy upside down. While Dyer’s rich scenery and worldbuilding stand out, it’s the author’s hyperfocus on those areas that causes the narrative to suffer. Read More

About the Book
When the man who raped Scottsdale PI Lena Jones when she was a nine-year-old foster child is released from prison, Lena is waiting for him in the parking lot-with a big knife. "Papa" Brian Wycoff survives their meeting, but the next day, his wife, who knew about his crimes but did nothing to stop him --- in fact enabled him --- is found dead in their Apache Junction home, shot through both eyes. Terrified he will be next, Wycoff, violating his parole, flees north to the small town of Black Canyon City, taking shelter in an RV on his brother-in-law's small ranch. A couple of days later, he is found tortured to death, eight horizontal marks burned into his flesh. One for each of his victims?
Suspicion first falls upon Lena, who has trailed Wycoff to Black Canyon City to make sure he doesn't come near any other children. When the local authorities arrive to question her, she admits to having been tempted to kill her former foster father, but someone beat her to the punch. Suspicion then falls on Wycoff's other victims, the now-grown men and women he abused when they were still in his care, and on the mothers of the children who went missing before his arrest.
When Lena takes up the case, more to protect one of the mothers who has been arrested than to find the real killer, her conscience is torn. Does a serial child rapist, a pedophile also implicated in the disappearance of several children, really deserve justice? That choice might not be left up to Lena when members of a local group, Parents of Missing Children, start working to prevent her investigation from succeeding. How far will they go to make sure she fails?
