Several months ago, Teen Board member Kate F. had the chance to go to Book Con, a two-day long celebration of books, authors and readers. She wrote about her experience here on Teenreads. Now she is back on the blog with a post on Gender Equality in YA, which was inspired by one of the panels she went to while at the convention.
For the past three years, readers and authors alike have looked forward to BookCon, an event where storytelling and pop culture collide. Each year, authors, publishers, celebrities and creators converge with readers to discuss the latest trends in storytelling and the future of reading with fellow booklovers. In addition to panels and signing opportunities, BookCon features Q&As, storytelling podcasts, special screenings, literary quiz shows and, of course, the chance to meet fellow readers and make tons of new friends. Teen Board Member F. attended BookCon in Chicago this year and told us a bit about her experience --- and even shared some photos!
As Thanksgiving rolls around, I always find myself in awe of the amount of things each and every one of us has to be thankful for. Maybe it’s our families, our friends, the world we live in… even the books we read! Below I have complied a list of novels I am thankful for and why I am thankful for them. Even before the press surrounding the recent release of its long-lost “sequel,” GO SET A WATCHMAN, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is one of those books that has been part of America’s collective consciousness since it was first published in 1960. It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961, was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film, and in a 2008 survey conducted by Renaissance Learning, was found to be the most widely read book of students between 9th and 12th grades.
Although its candid explorations of race, childhood innocence and courage in the face of injustice has given this seminal book serious staying power, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is not free from being challenged in schools and libraries.
