THE TRUTH COMMISSION by Susan Juby is a phenomenal novel with a compelling narrator. Normandy Pale attends an elite arts school called Green Pastures Academy in Canada with her friends Neil and Dusk. Together, they form the “Truth Commission,” in which they seek the truth from students and faculty at their high school. However, they can’t always find the truth, and when they do, it can lead to an entire series of events (fortunate or unfortunate). When Norm starts looking for the truth a little closer to home, things turn bad very quickly.

Norm’s sister, Keira, is a prodigy in writing and animation. As a young teen she created a fascinating comic known as The Diana Chronicles that resembled the life of her family in a grotesque manner. Making millions of dollars off the comic series, Keira left to attend one of the most highly ranked universities for her area of expertise, leaving her family behind. With her gone, Norm and her parents were able to relax and live normal lives without the fear that their next mishap would end up in a future installation of The Diana Chronicles. However, months pass and Keira returns home unexpectedly and remains locked in her closet writing her comic, speaking to no one. All of a sudden, she confides in Norm about what happened at college. Not knowing what to do with this truth and all the other ones acquired by Neil and Dusk, Norm’s life begins to spin out of control.

The dynamic between Norm, Neil and Dusk is absolutely striking. They are without a doubt three of the most unique characters I’ve ever gotten the pleasure to read about and everything about them made me wish I was a part of their friend group.

THE TRUTH COMMISSION combines sparks of genuine romance, intelligent humor and relatable problems. The characters are so beautifully written that they come alive with each turn of the page. The dynamic between Norm, Neil and Dusk is absolutely striking. Susan Juby’s writing is extraordinary, and she truly succeeded at writing a novel within a novel. THE TRUTH COMISSION is one of those stories that will grab you from the first page with Norm’s unique voice and have you rooting for her until the end. Her plight will make your heart ache, but her victory will make your heart soar. This is an amazing novel and I can’t wait to read more of Susan Juby’s work.

They are juniors at a high school for artistsl, and have no fear. They are the Truth Commission. Then, one of their truth targets says to Normandy: “If you want to know about the truth, you might want to look a little closer to home.”  This dryly funny, knife-sharp novel, written as "narrative nonfiction" by Normandy herself, features footnotes, illustrations and a combination mystery/love story that will capture readers from the frst page.
