While Ella leads a quaint life as an artist, navigating the halls of her high school with best friend Josh in tow, her sister, Maddy, is the most popular girl in school. Flanked by her loving boyfriend, Alex, snarky best friend, Jenna and idolizing worshipers, Maddy manages to make her life appear perfect to outsiders.
On the night of a party at Alex’s house, Maddy calls Ella and begs for a ride home. During their trip, annoyed and angered by her sister’s lackadaisical approach to life, Ella drops the bomb that she will no longer cover for her sister academically. Distracted by this tense conversation, Ella drives her car into a tree, ending Maddy’s life.
