In Matt de la Peña’s THE LIVING, Shy --- a 17-year-old Mexican-American boy working on a cruise liner --- survives enormous tsunamis and is forced to subsist in the open sea with his companion, Addie. Although they’re eventually rescued, Shy isn’t safe because he has information that the pharmaceutical firm LasoTech wants, and they will stop at nothing to get it --- he knows that they created the rapidly spreading Romero disease, which has killed as many people as the earthquakes, and the subsequent vaccines.

I read and recommend everything that de la Peña writes and THE HUNTED is no different.

THE HUNTED continues the story of THE LIVING, leaving out the 36 days that Shy, Carmen, Marcus and Shoeshine spend on a dilapidated sailboat as they make their way back to California. The four of them are shocked when they see the coastline for the first time, as there has been so much destruction caused by the earthquakes, and they want nothing more than to find their families. However, they also carry the vaccines for Romero disease --- and a letter explaining everything LasoTech did --- and are determined to get these materials into the hands of scientists before LasoTech catches them.

THE HUNTED is a fast-paced, action-packed dystopian adventure story. de la Pena doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to describing the devastation left by the earthquakes and the disease, and therefore this might not be recommended reading for the faint of heart. However, I would recommend it to everyone else. de la Peña manages to include elements of romance in THE HUNTED, and he also integrates quiet moments into the story so Shy can reflect on the world around him, his past, his present and his future.

I read and recommend everything that de la Peña writes and THE HUNTED is no different. I highly recommend reading both THE LIVING and THE HUNTED.

When the Big One hit, Shy was at sea in style. The Paradise Cruise luxury liner he worked on was a hulking specimen of the best money could buy. And now it's at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, along with almost all of its passengers. Shy wasn't the only one to survive, though. Addie, the rich blond daughter of a mysterious businessman, was on the dinghy he pulled himself into. But as soon as they found the rest of the survivors, she disappeared.

About the Book

When the Big One hit, Shy was at sea in style. The Paradise Cruise luxury liner he worked on was a hulking specimen of the best money could buy. And now it's at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, along with almost all of its passengers.

Shy wasn't the only one to survive, though. Addie, the rich blond daughter of a mysterious businessman, was on the dinghy he pulled himself into. But as soon as they found the rest of the survivors, she disappeared.

The only thing that filled the strange void of losing her was finding Carmen, his hot coworker, and discovering a way to get back home. But Shy's luck hasn't turned. Not yet.

Back on the dinghy, Addie told him a secret. It's a secret that people would kill for--have killed for--and she has the piece that could turn everything on its ear. The problem? Shy has no idea where Addie is. Back home in California seems logical, but there are more ways to die back home then Shy could ever have guessed.

And thanks to what Shy now knows, he's a moving target.
