In the Sunken City, bell towers toll to mark the executions of men, women and children. The crowd’s jeering excitement rings throughout the town, fueling the bloodshed. But the people are being robbed of their enjoyment as prisoners begin mysteriously disappearing from their cells, leaving only a red-tipped rook feather behind. As the leaders of the Sunken City scramble to find this Red Rook, more revolutions are evolving, finding courage in one name: the Red Rook.

Across the sea in the Commonwealth, Sophia Bellamy watches as her world falls to ruin, both in the Sunken City and within her own home. With no other way to save her family and their land, Sophia is betrothed to René Hasard. Cheerful, naïve and annoying, René is the farthest thing Sophia has ever pictured as a suitable husband. But as her situation becomes increasingly dire and the search for the Red Rook intensifies, Sophia realizes that there is much more to her future husband than meets the eye. Together, Sophia and René may be able to rebuild their crumbling world, but only if the two can learn to trust one another.

ROOK by Sharon Cameron is a must-read of 2015. Readers will not be able to help falling in love with this unique novel and its realistic characters.

ROOK by Sharon Cameron is a standout novel for its originality, its complex characters and its suspenseful plot. First, ROOK is a book like no other. Set in the future, the characters live in or around a city called the Sunken City, which used to be Paris. Even though it is set in the future, there is no new technology in this novel. In fact, all technology is illegal and the people have reverted back to medieval times. This wonderfully unique element adds another layer to the novel’s complexity.

Also, ROOK has brilliantly complex characters and relationships. Our heroine, Sophia Bellamy, is a mystery from the start. She is a far cry from what her society thinks is a “proper” lady and she is not afraid to get her hands dirty. Witty, clever and impulsive, Sophia is a character readers will care about until the end of the novel. Sophia’s fiancé, René Hasard, is equally entertaining and matches Sophia perfectly. He is an intriguing character and is a mystery to the reader and to Sophia throughout the novel.

Lastly, ROOK is full of suspense and danger. Sharon Cameron makes the readers care about what happens to the characters, and in doing so, heightens the suspense even more. In conclusion, ROOK by Sharon Cameron is a must-read of 2015. Readers will not be able to help falling in love with this unique novel and its realistic characters.
