Ten-year-old Red --- whose hair is orange and who doesn’t like being called Red --- longs to live in a paradise, far from the chaos of her foster home. One day, while she’s ditching school, her day of sitting in the sun and following the railroad tracks takes a turn for the amazing when the police car taking her home is abducted by aliens --- with Red in the backseat! The cruiser, and its human passenger have been taken by the Aquilari, extra-terrestrial collectors of objects and artifacts from around the galaxy, and brought onto the ship Cheldonia. And so begins Red’s adventures in space in RED’S PLANET, the first book in Eddie Pittman’s new graphic novel series.

"RED’S PLANET is a fun story supported by bright and dynamic images. Pittman’s style is smooth and cinematic...."
Red, along with a group of diverse aliens, finds herself on a strange and hostile planet after the ship crashes. The group, including plant-like figures named Herb and Kale and a blobby mother and her baby, scramble to find water, food and shelter. Red and a big-eyed “gray” named Tawee are both distrusted by the others, so they wander away from the crash site to see what they can discover. After being chased by a herd of hungry blue creatures called Bobalunx, they are saved by a grumpy but kind cat named Goose. It turns out the the cabin Tawee and Red had their eyes on for a possible home belongs to Goose and he doesn’t want guests. But he also doesn’t want to just send them away hungry and vulnerable. The three return to the crash site together and, with the help of an addled Aquilari robot, they learn more about the vast, priceless and creepy collection. Before he knows it, all of the crash survivors have returned to Goose’s cabin to await the rescue they are told could take as long as three years. Red is not sad at this prospect, however, as she finally sees her chance to create the home she has always dreamed of.

The newly formed community (and Goose) are going to have to work together, and show patience and understanding to live on the planet and survive.

RED’S PLANET is a fun story supported by bright and dynamic images. Pittman’s style is smooth and cinematic, probably due to his work on various Disney film and television hits. Red is a tough and spunky dreamer and hopefully will be more fully developed in future books. Pittman has left plenty of room for upcoming tension and drama while beginning to create an interesting world. Some of the cut-away action to the Aquilari is a bit confusing, but that will also surely be cleared up as the story and the series progress. Overall, this is a neat and entertaining, if not entirely original, book.
