The NYPD Red series began as a collaboration between James Patterson and Marshall Karp. But with the release of NYPD RED 7, Karp became the sole author of the ongoing saga of NYPD Red Detectives Kylie MacDonald and Zach Jordan.
This eighth and latest entry features a bomber with a deadly agenda and vendetta against New York City. The brief prologue depicts the first of the bomb attacks, which occurs at 11:59am at the Wall Street subway station. It claims several victims, including three women traveling from Astoria to downtown Manhattan who were hunting for a bridal gown. Three generations are wiped out with one explosion, and it will not be the last.
"The final act of NYPD RED 8 is an intense and exciting read featuring a race against the clock to stop this demented individual before his actions cost more lives."
The bomber had called 911 prior to this initial attack and warned them via a message for the Mayor that he was going to destroy New York City the way that it destroyed his family. Until the NYPD, and specifically the Red team, has more to go on, it will be a difficult case to pin down. There are millions of residents to choose from, many of whom may bear some sort of grudge against the city.
The team learns that the three victims from the Wall Street attack were the immediate family of a longtime friend of the force, street vendor Nico Patrakis, who had served Greek delicacies to those outside One Plaza in Manhattan for decades. Nico vows his own revenge, and he has the money and manpower to launch a formidable attack if the police don’t apprehend the killer quickly.
Throughout the novel, there is a secondary case that hits close to home for Kylie when her brother is accused of murdering a shady filmmaker who allegedly stole his life story from which to make an independent film. This will distract Kylie and Zach from their main investigation, causing a lack of focus that allows the bomber to continue his killing spree.
