Molly Barlow made a mistake, and his name is Gabe. She left Star Lake and all the people in it, mainly to get away from that mistake. But she couldn’t leave forever. When she comes back for the summer, it is clear that no one forgets what she did.
99 DAYS is so much more than a typical young adult romance novel.
It was the character development, and not the storyline, that drew me into HOW TO LOVE author Katie Cotugno’s latest book, 99 DAYS. When I started to read the book, I thought that it was going to be a typical romance novel, but the characters set it apart from other similar stories. Molly, Gabe, Patrick, Julia…all of them developed nicely over the course of the novel. You feel their pain --- Molly’s especially. You can tell that she truly is sorry for the mistakes she made, and she wants to fix them as much as possible. You are essentially drawn into the swirling vortex that makes up her emotions.
When you read 99 DAYS, you can’t get enough of the Donnelly boys --- Patrick and Gabe --- who are a central part of the book; without these two, Molly wouldn’t have a story to tell. I like how Cotugno gets inside their minds a little bit and puts it on paper; it adds a little something to the novel. I also like the ending of 99 DAYS --- it was very fitting for the novel.
99 DAYS is so much more than a typical young adult romance novel. It has more facets than appear on the surface, and those are what make the book. I can assure anyone contemplating reading this novel that it deserves your time.

About the Book
From the acclaimed author of HOW TO LOVE comes another stunning contemporary novel, perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen.
Molly Barlow is facing one long, hot summer --- 99 days --- with the boy whose heart she broke and the boy she broke it for...his brother.
Day 1: Julia Donnelly eggs my house my first night back in Star Lake, and that's how I know everyone still remembers everything. She has every right to hate me, of course: I broke Patrick Donnelly's heart the night everything happened with his brother, Gabe. Now I'm serving out my summer like a jail sentence: Just 99 days till I can leave for college and be done.
Day 4: A nasty note on my windshield makes it clear Julia isn't finished. I'm expecting a fight when someone taps me on the shoulder, but it's just Gabe, home from college and actually happy to see me. "For what it's worth, Molly Barlow," he says, "I'm really glad you're back."
Day 12: Gabe wouldn't quit till he got me to come to this party, and I'm surprised to find I'm actually having fun. I think he's about to kiss me --- and that's when I see Patrick. My Patrick, who's supposed to be clear across the country. My Patrick, who's never going to forgive me.
