Katharine’s Remarkable Road Trip by Gail Ward Olmsted

5
If you want to learn and experience the life of an exceptional woman during the early 1900s, this is your treat of a book. Join Kate on her week-long solo road trip in her new car. At 77 years old this is not a common sight and neither is Kate. Being a determined and self-sufficient woman is just the start of what you learn of her life. The best part of the book is meeting all the people along the way and the impact she makes on their lives. There were parts in the book that I almost had tears in my eyes the scenes were so tender and real. A positively delightful book. Highly recommended.

Exodus by Leon Uris

3
Read this years ago but didn't remember much. Felt it was too wordy and needed a good edit. Interesting that re-reading an older book doesn't always have the same impact. Also watched the move - acting, cinematography, photography and technology have come a long way!

Donna
Isola by Allegra Goodman

5
ISOLA by Allegra Goodman is a breathtaking saga, powerful and compelling. In the Author’s Note, we learn that it was inspired by Marguerite de la Rocque de Roberval, a 16th century noblewoman. I could not put it down!! Although it’s set during the 16th century, it felt both historic and modern. It is a tale of love, faith and survival. Beautifully written, intense and emotional. I absolutely loved it.

Rose
Margo's Got Money Troubles by Rufi Thorpe

4
3.5 rounded to 4 of 5 stars. Margo gets pregnant by her professor and has the child. Since she can't find reliable child care, she loses her waitressing job and needs to figure out how to earn money. Her estranged father comes to live with her and tells her about the OnlyFans website. Margo researches it, and starts posting videos. This action puts her in contact with JB, and also puts the custody of her son in danger. An interesting look at how influencers use social media, and how this non-reality world affects lives. Funny at times, but also tragic, in a way, as it examined a young girl trying to navigate her relationships.

Rose
The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa

4
Max is asked by his brother, Andrew, to tell his fiancée, Lina, that Andrew can't marry her. He does this on the wedding day! Lina is a wedding planner, and this is the ultimate embarrassment-she couldn't even get married herself! Now a few years later, Lina is offered an opportunity to be the wedding coordinator at a prestigious hotel. One problem, she is assigned to work with Max, who was to be the best man at her wedding, and who delivered the devastating news that Andrew wasn't going to marry her. As they work together, their attraction is undeniable. Max worries about being a second choice in Lina's life. Lina worries that Max is not in it for real. A spicy romance with some witty banter.

The Three Lives of Cate Kay by Kate Fagan

Took a little time to get into, but once I did I couldn't put it down.

Summer on the Bluffs by Sunny Hostin

4
This story follows Amelia (Ama) Vaux Tanner as she marries Omar, grows wealthy in her own right, and counsels three young girls as their godmother. After Omar's death, Ama knows she will invite the girls, Perry, Olivia, and Billie, to The Bluffs summer house to decide to whom she will give the house. Each girl is special to Ama in their own way, and we learn the true reasons for Ama and Omar being in their lives. The story highlights strong Black women, their jobs, their romances, their flaws, and their pasts. I enjoyed reading the various characters' stories.

Darlene
The Housemaid's Secret by Freida McFadden

5
Great.

Michelle
Dolly Parton, Songteller by Dolly Parton

4
I can’t believe how much I enjoyed this! Dolly Parton is a bright light with such a generous heart. I’ve never been a big country fan, but we always listened to her Christmas album growing up. What I appreciated the most was hearing about all the stories behind her songs. The only drawback is this is not a memoir. It’s done more in an interview style. But her heart and songtelling shines through, and I loved her little off-tangent stories.

Wanda
The Shadows We Hide by Allen Eskins

5
Another great read - sequel to THE LIFE WE BURY. Joe Tolbert discovers he has a step sister…after the death of his father he never had met. Characters are well written, storyline keeps the reader going for more. A great read! Many adventures and twists in this novel. I also love the writer's sense of humor!

We Solve Murders by Richard Osman

4
Having enjoyed Osman’s previous series, about the Thursday Murder Club, I was looking forward to his new series beginning with this one. Well, I wasn’t disappointed. It was a different formula but equally fun and yet well plotted. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan

2
I was on the library list for this book a long time so I was expecting it to be great, but it just didn't catch my interest. Thank goodness it was a small book.

Rona
The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali

5
I won this book in the Bookreporter.com contest and I loved this story. I was mesmerized by the relationship between Homa and Ellie over the span of their lives as well as learning about the culture of Iran. This book delves into so many things that can affect relationships and draws in the reader because we can all relate to those nuances in our own lives.

MH
The Leftover Woman by Jean Kwok

3
This book features a Chinese woman who finds out her baby isn’t dead but has been adopted in America. With China’s one child policy, her husband hopes for a boy. The story starts with her in America working to get enough money to pay off the “snakeheads” who paid her passage to America. Somehow, (not well explained in the book), she has located the child. Added into the mix, in NYC, she happens to run into her childhood friend Anthony.

Rosa
Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan

5
This novella was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and I was intrigued that such a short book would be. Plus, it was on the NY Times Top 100 Books of the 21st Century. I get it. This story stayed with me for a long time, and I savored every word of Claire Keegan's beautiful prose. About Bill Furlong, who works in selling coal and is a devoted husband and father. Set in a small town in Ireland in 1985. It is a commentary on the terrible abuse that occurred in the Magdalene Laundries and the more general question of "What makes a life?" ("What was it all for?") I need to read this again.

LisaMarie
After the Ocean by Lauren E. Rico

5
Loved this book so much. About a very painful mystery that was left unsolved. It took decades to find out what happened. What an emotional story but it had the most beautiful ending. Highly recommend.

Carol
Red Rabbit by Alex Grecian

4
Uniquely different and interesting perspectives on grief, ghosts, witches and family.

Linda
The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

4
A page-turning mystery/thriller with the usual secrets, deception and surprises. I liked the plot more with its multiple time lines after I got to know the many characters better.

dorothy
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

5
Loved this book and learned a lot about an octopus! I have recommended to many people and the feedback is that they all liked it as much as I did.

Donna
Fear Nothing by Lisa Gardner

5
This book definitely kept you guessing whodunnit. It is kind of gruesome so be prepared. Yet the story keeps you hanging on to the end of the book. Definitely a challenging family dynamic situation with foster care predicaments. Lisa Gardner keeps you engaged from the first page to the last. Enjoy!

Cheryl
The Secret War of Julia Child by Diana R. Chambers

5
We heard that Julia Child was a secretary for the OSS during World War II and met her husband Paul, but the author gives another possibility of Julia’s service - undercover spy for Wild Bill Donovan, the head of OSS. We encounter Julia as a young woman, a Smith girl, whose first love jilted her and her old reliable boyfriend from California just doesn’t spark for her. The book is fascinating in its descriptions of life in India and Ceylon during WWII. and the characters come to life off the page.

Sharon
Presumed Guilty by Scott Turow

5
I personally think he writes the very best legal thrillers and this one is top of the list. You get into each character and the ending...!!!

Donna
Never Meant to Meet You by Alli Frank and Asha Youmans

5
I'm rereading this book as I recommended it to our book club and of course I have to lead the meeting since I recommended it. I'm enjoying it even more than the first time. Marjette, a Black kindergarten teacher meets her new neighbor Noa, a Jewish mother of a 6-year-old whose husband has just died. The differences in their lives make for a very funny but thought-provoking book that I hope someone makes into a movie someday. It's light reading but but lots to discuss.

Jean
Sanibel Flats by Randy Wayne White

5
This is the first in White's series about former government agent/current fish specimen gatherer Doc Ford. Ford has returned to Sanibel Island where he grew up. White, a former fishing guide, does a great job introducing the main characters who reappear throughout the series while telling a complicated story of corruption, lost love, kidnapping, friendship, and living with nature.

Elizabeth
Orbital by Samantha Harvey

3
I listened to this book and may have been distracted while doing so, but though the language was beautiful I found it very repetitive. I got the message about country boundaries being arbitrary and national differences meaningless up in space, but I didn't need to hear it again and again.

Sandra K.
The Symphony of Echoes by Jodi Taylor

4
This is the second book in the Chronicles of St. Mary’s series. This series is a mad mixture of many genres and I love it. You have time travel, magic, romance, etc.

Barbara
The Queens of Crime by Marie Benedict

5
I love all of Marie’s books! This one was very intriguing since it didn’t focus on one little-known woman from history, but on five female detectives - the only one I knew was Agatha Christie.

Nancy
The House of My Mother by Shari Franke

3
I never followed the vlog "Passengers", so this memoir by the eldest daughter of a mother who physically and psychologically abused her children while presenting the family in a positive and happy light didn't have the impact on me that it might have on readers who are familiar with matriarch Ruby. I did know the bare bones of the story and how Ruby and her partner, Jodi Hildebrandt, went to prison for child abuse. I found it disconcerting that Shari only tells the story of herself, the oldest child, and her brother, and leaves the others to tell their own stories, like a big part of the story is missing, even though newspapers reported the horror inflicted on the youngest in detail. I'd say read it, but read other TBR choices first.

Rose
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

4
I enjoyed this sweet story of a woman, Mika, who feels that everyone has abandoned her and taken advantage of her. She spends her time making videos pretending to be a witch. Then, she is contacted to help out a group that believes she is a witch. This group has a secret and they need Mika to help them. Some of the group don't want her there, and she has to work to be accepted by them. It is a really sweet and unique story of belonging.

Rose
Yours Cheerfully by A. J. Pearce

4
This is the second book in the series. Emmy is working for the magazine and is dating Charles. After attending a meeting with other journalists, Emmy has an idea to feature stories about the women's work effort during the war. Her work exposes the hardships the women face with childcare as they work to support the war effort. Yet, the employers turn a blind eye to the plight of the women. Many of these women have husbands who were killed during the war and must work to support their family. It covers the protests and the efforts made to expose this. Additionally, the story focuses on Emmy's friendship with Bunty, and her relationship with Charles. It is funny at times. A different look at WWII and the way it affected society.

Tessa
Tiny Tales by Alexander McCall Smith

3
Subtitle: Stories of Romance, Ambition, Kindness and Happiness. This is a lovely collection of short stories and cartoons on a wide range of subjects, set in a variety of locations. I like Smith’s writing and the way he ponders philosophical questions. He doesn’t seem to take himself, or life, all that seriously, choosing to find joy and happiness in everyday life. Like all such collections, this is probably best enjoyed as one of those volumes you pick up now and again, to read one or two stories, rather than reading the entire book as one would a novel.

Mary
The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave

4
I loved the book but found the number of characters distracting. Personally I find I enjoy books less when I have to go back and trace the characters. The story is deeply moving and Dave packs in a lot of revelations in not so many pages which makes it move quickly. I enjoy books that look into the dynamics of family which Dave provides.

Francisca
Lord Dashwood Missed Out by Tessa Dare

3
A typical regency romance with a devilishly handsome gentleman (who isn’t much of a gentleman), and a prim lady of impeccable reputation, forced to endure a potentially compromising situation, and then embracing the compromise wholeheartedly. Bodices heave, knees go weak, their passion overcomes any hesitancy. A fun, fast read.

Janet
Extinction by Douglas Preston

4
Exciting adventure novel with a Jurassic Park feel. This is a murder mystery. It could make a good movie, except for all the deaths.

Janet
Grave Danger by James Grippando

5
Another great novel featuring lawyer Jack Swyteck. This time, his father asks him to defend a woman who is pretending to be her missing sister and trying to take her niece out of Iran. Who is this woman? What game is she playing? Jack must solve the mystery and keep the child safe.

Sandy
Battle Mountain by C. J. Box

4
Another great book by this author. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Dianne
James by Percival Everett

5
Outstanding retelling of THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN from the perspective of James.

Jeanne
Holmes Is Missing by James Patterson and Brian Sitts

4
HOLMES IS MISSING by James Patterson and Brian Sitts is an easy to read, entertaining, suspense-filled story about six newborn babies who are stolen all at the same time from the room where newborns are kept at a high-end exclusive hospital. The trio of Holmes, Marple and Poe, are hired by the wealthy parents to find their babies much to the irritation of the police department and the FBI. The plot is intense and complex. I thought there was a bit too much focus on the personal lives of the dynamic trio, and it was a bit tiresome to keep reading about the characters. I thought more focus should be on finding the missing babies. That being said, I laughed out loud at Poe’s heartwarming and hilarious reactions.

Rose
Somewhere Beyond the Sea by T. J. Klune

5
A beautiful sequel to THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA, Arthur and Linus continue to advocate for the children. There is a new "child" in the mix. David is a Yeti, and Arthur and Linus want him to join their family. They are once again up against the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. This is a novel that addresses the character's differences and celebrates them. The narration of the audiobook by Daniel Henning made listening to this book a wonderful experience. I also loved hearing T. J. Klune's acknowledgements. This book is just what I needed, a true story of celebrating uniqueness and love.

Lucy
No Two Persons by Erica Bauermeister

Best book I’ve read in years! Interesting concept with beautifully-written prose. Couldn’t skip a word, it was so well written.

Good Dirt by Charmaine Wilkerson

5
Ebby Freeman is only ten when two gunmen entered her family home in New England and killed her brother Baz and shattered a family heirloom jar, called Old Mo. Now, 20 years later, Ebby is left at the altar by her fiancé, Henry, a photographer, who doesn't have the courage to call off the wedding in person. The story alternates between present time and the history of the Freeman family, and the pottery jar. Henry and Ebby meet again in France, and Henry admits the reason he broke the engagement. Ebby confides this info and her own secret to her father. Her dad finally tells Ebby and Soh, her mom, the secret he has been keeping for years. This is an excellent story of family trauma and generations of perseverance. I loved it!

Ann
Horror Movie by Paul Tremblay

3
This book is okay if you like the slasher type of horror.

Rose
The Mistletoe Mystery by Nita Prose

4
This is my favorite Molly the Maid story. It is Christmastime, and Molly reminisces about the traditions she and Gran had observed. Now, with her boyfriend, Juan Manuel, they try to recreate these traditions. The novella had a bit of a nod to "The Gift of the Magi", one of my favorite Christmas stories. The "mystery" was obvious to me, but Molly is slow to pick up on clues, so it took a while for her to understand what was happening. Sweet Christmas tale.

Rose
Waiting for the Long Night Moon: Stories by Amanda Peters

4
As a descendant of Mi'kmaq heritage, Amanda Peters has written a collection of short stories. These stories include original stories highlighting issues facing various tribal communities. There are also some fables and folklore which she reimagined after hearing them from her friends. The stories range from just a page or two to slightly longer, and are often heart-wrenching and filled with grief. I really enjoyed her novel, THE BERRY PICKERS, and was happy to read this collection of short stories. I like the spotlight she is shining on native communities.

Sean
The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley

3
Lucy Foley tries to tell an Agatha Christie-esque mystery but just doesn't hit the mark. The book isn't bad, but I don't know that it's good either. The story is set up by stranding a group of friends at an inaccessible Scottish lodge. Foley does her best to create as many red herrings as possible, but the victim and suspect were mostly obvious. I thought the book would have been better served with more voices, less throw away characters, and less twists for twists sake. I did really enjoy the concept of friends evolving into new roles as we grow and change in adulthood. I also thought the lodge and the elements were portrayed well. Overall, an easy mystery without enough credible options.

Better than Fiction by Alexa Martin

4
Drew Young is devastated after her grandmother's death. She was a photographer, but when her grandmother leaves Drew her bookstore, The Book Nook, Drew isn't really a reader of romance, especially after the way her father treated her mother and their family. This changes when romance author, Jasper Williams, meets Drew at a book signing. He is determined to introduce Drew to various books and help her expand her view. As this is a romance, naturally, sparks fly. But when Drew discovers that Jasper has hidden a very important piece of information, their romance is put in jeopardy. Alexa Martin is a go-to romance author; you can always count on her for a great story with real-life issues affecting the characters.

Rose
Digging for God by Tom Hillman

4
The author recounts a tale of a man going to an ashram for a spiritual retreat. This short book mentions the solitude of having a quiet breakfast, toiling the earth with other participants on the retreat, enjoying nature, and camaraderie and meditation. It is a quiet, reflective book that allows you to center your thoughts and imagine the experience of spending time away from the day to day life, and allowing yourself time to find God in all things.

Rose
First-Time Caller by B. K. Borison

4
Aiden is host of a romance call in radio show in Baltimore. However, he doesn't feel very romantic. He guards his heart after witnessing the heartache his father showed when his mom was diagnosed with cancer. Maya believes her mom, Lucie, is lonely, so she calls into the station asking if Aiden could find a date for her mother. When Lucie overhears the call, she grabs the phone and speaks to Aiden. The conversation is so moving, the station manager asks Lucie to come on the show. Naturally, Aiden and Lucie slowly fall for each other, but Aiden still can't open his heart completely. It is a sweet rom-com, with some spicy scenes. I enjoyed it.

Michael
The Griffin Sisters' Greatest Hits by Jennifer Weiner

5
I got this one free in a giveaway so I don't know if it has been released yet. I had heard of Jennifer Weiner but this is my first time reading her work. It was so good! No spoilers so I won't go into the plot other than to say it is about two sisters who became a very successful singing group that ended abruptly. I loved how it all played out. I had to know what happened!! I love that in a book. There are multiple timelines and multiple POVs but they were used very effectively. Very strong character development pretty much across the board. I liked this one enough to seek out more of Jennifer Weiner's work. If all of her books are this good, I am in for some great reading! Highly recommended.

Enjoyed it. Felt the ending was too quick but enjoyed it.

Carolyn
The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

4
I listened to this book on Audible and enjoyed it very much. I felt in tune with the characters as the narrator brought them to life. The story was wonderful, but it did seem to drag at times. I would still highly recommend.

Teresa
Falls to Pieces by Douglas Corleone

5
I've never read anything by this author before and was pleasantly surprised! He adequately described many thoughts and feelings from a woman's perspective, especially a scared woman on the run and terrified of being found! It was a great psychological thriller and a wonderful mystery at the same time! I've read 39 books so far this year, but this was the most recent one.

Natalie

4
Caring story about lost souls.

Judi
The Instrumentalist by Harriet Constable

5
This is an amazing historical fiction title set in Venice. The main character, Anna Maria, is an amazing violinist who is being raised in an orphanage in the 1700s. Anna Maria has synesthesia and Constable does a wonderful job of putting the colors she sees in music. Vivaldi becomes her music teacher and a major force in her life. This is based on real events, and it was a moving and powerful story.

Katy
Good Dirt by Charmaine Wilkerson

5
Fantastic read! I thought it was better than BLACK CAKE. Not only was it a suspenseful read but I learned many things about slavery and how messages were passed. The author has a way of creating characters out of inanimate objects, which makes for a fascinating read. Highly recommend!

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry

5
A Pulitzer Prize winner that deserved all the major writing awards of 1986, this is an American classic that reads just as easily, humorously, and engagingly as it did 40 years ago. Ignored by some because of the label "western", it is a masterpiece about friendship, family, love, loss, and finding one's place in the world. I've been amazed at how many "Booktubers" who were not even alive when it was written place it in their top 10 novels of all time. For me, it is tied with A FINE BALANCE as the best novel I've read in over 50 years of adult reading.

Karen
Stranded by Sarah Goodwin

4
STRANDED is a novel that can be compared to LORD OF THE FLIES. But STRANDED has eight adults instead of choir of boys. There are three women in STRANDED but no girls in LORD OF THE FLIES. Both novels show a struggle to survive and competition between two groups with a designated leader. One is logical, one is violent. LORD OF THE FLIES is on a tropical island so there is food available. STRANDED is on a Scottish island that has little food. It is an experiment to see how the folks can get along and survive. The boys are victims of a plane crash during the evacuations in WWII.

Sucker Punch: Essays by Scaachi Koul

4
Scaachi Koul delivers a strikingly honest and deeply personal collection exploring family, identity, and resilience in SUCKER PUNCH: ESSAYS. Having followed her work, I was familiar with her sharp voice, but this book reaches a new level of intimacy. She opens up about divorce, parental expectations, and messy family dynamics with humor and raw emotion. The essays weave in Hindu mythology, adding depth to her reflections. If you love memoirs that make you laugh and hit hard, this one’s worth picking up.

Linda
Memorial Days by Geraldine Brooks

An extremely moving memoir and loving tribute to Brooks' husband. Beautifully written.

Joanne
The Author’s Guide to Murder by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig and Karen White

4
It got a bit tedious for me, but I semi-enjoyed this murder mystery written by a trio of authors. And they seemed to mimic the three female authors who were suspects in a murder in Scotland. Who could ask for more?

Carol
Margo’s Got Money Troubles by Rufi Thorpe

4
This is an unexpected story of a young woman who becomes pregnant by an older man in a position of authority. And it’s the story about her life how she manages her life with the help of her dad and friends, and the things she has to do to support herself and her family. It was interesting. It was sad. It was tender. It was funny. It was short and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Castle on Sunset by Shawn Levy

3
Life, death, love and scandal at the world famous Chateau Marmont. Interesting historical facts including the inspiration for the building.

Elizabeth
The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley

4
I enjoyed the format of this book about a bunch of people living in a Paris apartment, a girl and her missing brother. Each chapter was about one of the characters which helped you get to know them. All the characters are eventually tied together with quite a few surprises. A thoroughly fast-paced and enjoyable book.

Joan
Like Mother, Like Mother by Susan Rieger

4
This book deals with topics of relevance today, old fashioned news reporting exposing truth through journalism, corrupt president, domestic violence and long lasting consequences of PTSD in families. The characters are well written. From page one you are embedded in very interesting characters. The only drawback is the book seemed to gallop to a close, and Gould could have been drawn out a bit more. It had very interesting book club discussion material.

Richard N B
Candide by Voltaire

4
This is perhaps Voltaire’s best-known work. The novella follows the callow Candide as he travels the world searching for his true love, Cunégonde, accompanied by his faithful servant/ companion Cacambo. Voltaire managed to skewer virtually all “important” institutions of the day in this satirical fable. Among his adventures across the globe, Candide comes across Jesuits, the Inquisition, cannibals, El Dorado, pirates, an old woman, healers, merchants, etc. He frequently relies on the teachings of Pangloss to see him through, maintaining optimism in the face of adversity.

Luella

Three Days in June by Anne Tyler

4
In this short novel, a woman, Gail, is at a crossroads. She is 61, divorced, and potentially out of a job. Her daughter, Debbie, is getting married, and Gail isn't sure that the fiancé, Kenneth, is right for Debbie. Max, Gail's ex, has come to Baltimore for the wedding with a foster cat in tow. Since Kenneth is allergic, Gail has Max and the cat stay with her. Gail reflects on her life with Max, and what went wrong with their marriage. Over these three days, Gail reflects on a lot - and I enjoyed reading how she analyzed everything and how it ended. Anne Tyler always writes wisely about life. A good examination of a life, how love changes, how we worry about our children, and where we find love.

Julie
The House of Eve by Sadeqa Johnson

5
I loved this book! Set in Philadelphia and Washington, DC during the early 1950s and told from the perspective of two courageous African American women in alternating chapters. THE HOUSE OF EVE had me hooked from the very beginning as I immediately felt a connection with Eleanor and Ruby. THE HOUSE OF EVE is a well-written historical fiction novel that broaches reproductive choices, racism, colorism, class and education. I really like Johnson’s writing style and can’t wait to read more by her!

Debbie
The Grey Wolf by Louise Penny

4
Just finished savoring the latest novel by my favorite author, THE GREY WOLF. Louise Penny opens a heartwarming story of love, loyalty, and devotion. A plot to poison the water in Canada sends Armand Gamache and his crew racing to find all the individuals involved in this terrible threat. Who to trust? Louise Penny spins a well-rounded story filled with remarkable characters and vivid settings. The biggest disappointment rests in finished the book and waiting for the next adventure set in Canada. The characters of Three Pines take a back seat to all that Gamache and his crew must investigate. That remains my biggest gripe about the novel. Certain characters needed more storyline.

Jacki
Dream Count by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

4
DREAM COUNT is an excellent novel about four African women during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chimaka is introspective as she examines her relationships with men. Did she sacrifice too much of herself in these relationships? Or for her job? The narrative also tells the backstories of Chimaka’s best friend, cousin, and housekeeper’s and their struggles in their personal and professional lives. But, through it all they are friends who love, support and stand up for each other. Ms. Adichie also provides a lot of insight into the culture of wealthy Nigerians. The novel is engaging, witty, and sad.

A woman, Louisa Rodgers, comes to the clinic to meet Sarah Brandt Malloy. Louisa tells Sarah that she is researching patent medicines and their danger. She plans to write a magazine article for New Century magazine exposing these medicines as addictive, as they contain alcohol and drugs. A few days later, Louisa's father visits Sarah to tell Sarah that Louisa was killed and the police aren't investigating as they believe she was killed by a vagrant. The Malloy agency takes the case. Family dynamics of the Rodgers family, as well as the people at Louisa's boardinghouse and the manufacturing facility of one of the drugs she was researching are all suspect. Enjoyable mystery. Book 27 in series, but I read it as a standalone.

Of Women and Salt by Gabriela Garcia

Heartbreaking. Carmen begs her daughter Jeanette to get clean and sober from drugs. Carmen hasn't spoken to her mother, Dolores, in years. Maria Isabel in 1866 worked in a cigar factory where she fell in love with Antonio as he read to the workers. Their daughter Cecilia passed on a family heirloom to Dolores. Gloria is from El Savador and is taken by ICE. She had hoped to protect her daughter Ana from deportation, but the sitter dropped off Ana and drove away. Jeanette takes her in for a short time, but later Ana gets deported to be with her mom. A very sad look at trauma through the generations. A sad look at people trying to flee danger and oppression, and the immigration problems and how they are mishandled.

Historical fiction set in 17th century Rome. Based on the real-life of Noblewoman Costanza Piccolomini and her entwined affair with famed sculptor artist, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. A totally immersive novel…so hard to put down.

The Curse of Pietro Houdini by Derek B. Miller

5
WWII, historical fiction, set in Italy. The story of a 14-year-old boy, Massimo, who escapes Rome after his parents were killed. He’s beaten by thugs and ends up on the steps of an abbey where he befriends an art aficionado, Pietro Houdini. Together they work, secretly, to save plundered art. A masterful novel with rich warm characters. You will be thinking about this book long after you are finished reading.

Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty

Disappointed. I expected to love this author's latest release but it failed to hold my interest. While the concept is clever, the way the story is written was at times confusing. At different points I struggled to figure out which character was narrating.

I did not like this book, and I believe that Maddie should have been told the truth long before she graduated college which would have saved her mom the agony she still suffered to this day. Maddie was still their daughter, and I believe that she would have accepted the truth.

I was so caught up with Bri that the book ended too soon for me as I did not let her go. I was confused at first and thought that she was a man who willingly entered the ring to get the crap beaten out of her, but I soon discovered that she was tough due to her experience in the military and now I am a huge fan of hers!

This Time I'm Keeping You by Lani Blake

5
Holy smokes! I loved Nick and Poppy's story. Poppy is a small town girl who made it big as an author, but she rarely did book signings as she was stalked by a man who had a wealthy family and the police were not taking her seriously. Then she was attacked by a masked man who stole her purse. I liked that Nick never gave up on Poppy as they had a misunderstanding when she overheard his comments about her and she fled the town, but this time Nick was not letting her run again.

I don't know if I am ready for this world or not, to be "paired" and told what to do, or to be daily watched night and day for the good of the society! I liked this book and liked Kate, who was happy with her life. Married to Eric and had two children, but Eric was gone more and more to help find a cure for cancer because it would be good for the community. I was not happy with the leader's choices to break up Eric and Kate.

Omg, I could hardly read fast enough, and I am a speed reader! I was glued to the book the moment that Audery, a total clutch walking disaster, got fired from her latest temp job. All of her life she had been clumsy, and it was a miracle that she made it to be thirty years old! Her best friend, Ben, and she had decided to hit the bar. The next day they awoke in her apartment, but Ben was a ghost who couldn't remember anything. I laughed and I cried because the two friends could no longer hug each other. I can't wait to read Book Two!

Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout

5
Not a book to be galloped through, the point of this one is, as Lucy explains to Olive, "People ... People and the lives they lead..." The reader feels Bob's pain and frustration as he says, "These are broken people...And if you don't think everyone is broken in some way, you're wrong." All of Strout's characters seemed tied together in this novel that emphasizes "Love comes in so many different forms, but it is always love." The novel is not dramatic, but steady, and thoroughly enriching for the reader.

The Stonekeeper by Kazu Kibuishi

3
Book One in the Amulet graphic novel series. There are strange creatures, secret passages, robots tasked with protecting the family, and evil forces obviously out to get them. The illustrations are very good. Not too dark for these old eyes to see clearly what is happening. This is a good thing as the speech bubbles are few and far between.

Friend of My Springtime by Willa Cather

3
This is a lovely story. A mature woman writes about the residents of their “terrace,” particularly the Professor and Jack-a-Boy, a child who moves with his parents into the complex that has few children. It's rather sweet but predictable. Not her best effort.

More or Less Maddy by Lisa Genova

4
Lisa Genova’s writing was so on target that whenever I put the book down after reading about a manic episode, I needed to take a few breaths and calm myself. The story of Maddy’s diagnosis of manic depression shed light on the mental illness. The impact of her diagnosis on those around her was very interesting and honest. Denial, fear, secrecy, support - reactions varied and were true to life. Thanks to Bookreporter.com for sending this book reward that I really enjoyed!

The River We Remember by William Kent Krueger

4
William Kent Krueger tells a beautiful story about common people and the hurdles that life constructs to disturb the gentle flow of life. I find Krueger’s writing eludes to the beauty and the horror of life. THE RIVER WE REMEMBER shows that not everyone follows the same current. The story begins with the grisly discovery of a man’s body in the river. The fish, primarily the catfish, have devoured many areas of the body of Jimmy Quinn, the richest man of the area. Sheriff Brody Dern must find the murderer in this small community. Brody enters the murder scene, but wipes everything. The question arises that who is Brody protecting. Two young boys: Del and Scott, hope to aid in the discovery of the murderer.

Kill For Me, Kill For You by Steve Cavanagh

3
KILL FOR ME, KILL FOR YOU starts out slowly and then picks up speed like a train heading for the next station. The story seemed very disturbing and maybe not worth reading. The title comes from the book and movie, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN by Patricia Highsmith. In order to avoid being arrested for murder, the murderer kills for someone else and that person kills for them. Amanda and Naomi meet and plan to kill someone for the other individual, but the plan goes awry. Steve Cavanagh does a brilliant job with his characters and the scenes. What a wonderful detective in Andrew Farrow! Such compassion and humility! Not a story that I enjoyed, but it opened my eyes.

Paranoia by James Patterson and James O. Born

4
PARANOIA by James Patterson and James O. Born is the newest thriller in the Detective Michael Bennett series. Detective Bennett is assigned a new case to catch a killer who is killing retired police officers while dealing with family issues at home. Woven into the story is another case the detective’s new partner is working on with another detective trying to catch drug dealers who are also human traffickers. There were lots of twists and turns, surprise, danger and intrigue. At times, it was a little complicated when the plot switched from case to case. I enjoyed reading it, but it was not my favorite in this series.

Bound in Flame by Katherine Kayne

5
BOUND IN FLAME by Katherine Kayne is part of the Hawaiian Ladies Riding Society and the first book I’ve read by this author. It is set in the 1900s in Old Hawaii. Letty Lang is a strong, determined suffragist and a delightful, quirky character in a well-written story with good research into Hawaii in those early fascinating days. The cast of characters created and crafted by the author to fit perfectly with this easy to read, fast-paced, entertaining and sometimes a bit complex plot. I received a copy of this from the author and these opinions are my own. From the first page to the very last page, it was mesmerizing, educational and interesting, and a book I thoroughly enjoyed without writing a synopsis and giving away too much.

Outstanding character portrayals of three people intertwined by a prison stay for a young girl who killed a woman while driving drunk, the woman who runs the prison book club and the widower of the victim of the accident. Shelterwood by Lisa Wingate

3
The real life history behind this novel is both sad and fascinating, about the little "elf children," or orphaned Indian children who became homeless or murdered after they were put under the protection of guardians who did nothing but steal their land for wealth and power. The novel, however, told in a dual timeline, didn't quite grab me in either of the storylines. There was a lot going on, much of it very surface level, and I wish there was more character development, especially with the different children. Wingate ties things together nicely at the end. And the Author's Note at the end is one of the most powerful aspects.

Wow! This Stephanie Plum book starts with her engaged to both of the men in her life and with a third stalking her. I wasn’t sure I wanted to read this when my book club picked it out for our March book. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I love novels about anthropology and archaeology, a career I once considered in college. Add in Egypt, and I’m hooked! So, this dual timeline did not disappoint. Together, the two, one old, one young, solve the mystery of a missing artifact.

The Medicine Woman of Galveston by Amanda Skenandore

5
Interesting characters and a plot that moved along well made this an enjoyable book of historical fiction. Main character Tucia joined a traveling medicine show after an operating procedure went awry and a woman died She found a family for herself and disabled son with a group of circus people some would call misfits. Many in the group found peddling fake medicines to be distasteful, but like Tucia who had debts to pay, they had reasons they could not leave. Owner of the show, Huey was controlling, cruel, and dishonest with a hold over each of them. From traveling medicine shows to women physicians in the late 1800s/1900s, to a hurricane in Galveston, the author researched well and wrote a book that was hard to put down.

The Dry Grass of August by Anna Jean Mayhew

3
This historical fiction story is narrated by "Jubie," a 13-year-old and it's her coming-of-age story that takes place in the South during 1950s segregation. The writing sounds like that of a teenager; and the book could be categorized as young adult, but the content is too mature for them. That's why the average rating.

The Lock-up by John Banville

Donna
Shelterwood by Lisa Wingate

5
The 1909 and 1990 timelines in this book come together in the end to tie up loose threads. Native American children who have been allotted property in Oklahoma are taken under watch by "guardians" who exploit the children and keep the money for themselves. The 1990 timeline features a lady park ranger trying to solve the mystery of a missing teenager in the national forest. I especially enjoyed Wingate's portrayal of the children. It's a sad book, but there are many humorous moments.

The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden

Fascinating autobiography of Murphy's life as a cross-country mover. This is very much a snippet of a larger story which reads more as a glancing look into the lives of the characters rather than a story arc. What I read left me wanting more. WHILE YOU WERE OUT is a very interesting, disturbing and sad book. This is the story of the Kissinger family and the problems of sweeping family/home issues under the rug and not addressing them. The book also addresses how mental illness is addressed by society, government and insurance companies in the U.S. It is a sad and eye-opening book.

Mornings on Horseback by David McCullough

5
It was a surprise for me that MORNINGS ON HORSEBACK is not a biography of President Theodore Roosevelt but, rather, a biography of the young Theodore Roosevelt. That's what I wanted; I needed to understand what made the Roosevelt who became President Roosevelt. I can read a biography of President Roosevelt later. This account of young Roosevelt's life begins even before he did. Of course, his parents had so much to do with what he became. So his story begins with them. Although President Roosevelt wrote an autobiography, for some reason, he chose to leave out or at least say little of some people important to young Roosevelt's life. But David McCullough meticulously researched and found what Roosevelt didn't want to talk about.

A Gorgeous Excitement by Cynthia Weiner

5
I feel Cynthia Weiner’s debut novel, A GORGEOUS EXCITEMENT, should be generating a lot of excitement. It’s an edgy, coming-of-age tale that I found difficult to put down. In the Author’s Note prefacing this fantastic story, Ms. Weiner explains that she was inspired by her teenage years in Manhattan in the 1980s , and the horrific death of a young woman that would become known as the “Preppy Murder.” Between the music, books, TV shows and headlines mentioned, this beautifully-written story transported me right back to the 1980s. It was a perfect journey. I highly recommend A GORGEOUS EXCITEMENT.

I Must Say by Martin Short

3
This book should be listened to rather than read. With the audio you get to hear his impersonations of others and the voices of his well-known characters. I just don’t think it would read the same in the written format. You also get to hear the absolute love he had for his wife through his voice. You can just tell what she meant to him. I do wish he had waited another decade before writing his memoir though because I would have loved to have heard more about his tour with Steve Martin and his time on Only Murders in the Building.

The Love of My Life by Rosie Walsh

5
Brilliant! It is obvious that Rosie Walsh put much thought into creating the characters, the scenery, and the course of events to write this magnificent novel. The human element of trust, broken trust, betrayal, heartache, friendship, and love are elegantly written in the lives of her characters. All I keep thinking about is how much pain Emma lived with and how difficult and uncertain her future was going to be. But then there is Leo and oh how loving and understanding he is! The perfect beginning, middle, and ending. I loved this story!

The Vultures by Mark Hannon

4
3.5 rounded to 4 stars. Set in the 1970s, Buffalo is a town in decline. The Buffalo Bills owner is threatening to move the team unless he gets a new stadium. Corruption of city officials ensues. Pat Brogan, former detective, now an investigator for the DA's office is put on the case. At home, Pat is dealing with various troubles. Pat's son, Rory, is severely injured in Vietnam. His son, Tommy, gets involved with war protestors at University of Buffalo. Pat also has a wandering eye, and is keeping this from his wife, Rita. I think I would have enjoyed this more if I had the background of Pat Brogan, so now I have to read the first book about him. The desperation of the town and its residents comes through in this story.

Cecilia
The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

4
A VERY long book that I might have given up on had the writing and story not been as good. The storyline was interesting, but at times I think she spent a bit too long describing situations that would not have lost much in translation if they were trimmed some. Theo obviously needed much more mental health help than he got in his messed up life, but much of his troubles were self imposed. It was a (very) long and complex plot, that had a few twists I did not see coming. The author is talented, and her writing was fluid, just at times excessive. Did not regret reading this book, but honestly was glad to be done when finally reaching the end.

Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan

5
5 stars and a heart! A novel that explores the experiences of Mexican migrants working the fields of California at the beginning of the Great Depression. What I really love about this story is that Esperanza is a realistic 13-year-old. Esperanza does finally realize that it is up to her to change her attitude; she must learn to let go of the past and to embrace that she is rich in the love of family and friends. The author note at the end is well worth reading for the history lesson it imparts.

Coram House by Bailey Seybolt

5
Loved this book! I received an ARC copy and after reading it am sure it will be a bestseller. The story is based around a true story of an orphanage in Vermont. Essentially the story is fictional and really holds your interest. A writer goes to Vermont to write a story about what happened years ago at this orphanage. What develops are multiple murders during her investigation. Highly recommend. Looking forward to more from this author.

The Note by Alafair Burke

4
This was such an enjoyable thriller to listen to, it kept my attention as the story evolved. Three childhood friends reunite for a weekend in the Hamptons and overdo it, a bit, yeah, maybe more than a bit. The story is told through childhood flashbacks to when they all were at the same summer camp, two of them teenagers. The twists and turns just kept coming, I have to say this is my favorite story by Alafair Burke so far.

Fighting for Justice by Mark Shaw

3
The author ties much of his methods of research into the way Dorothy Kilgallen researched her newspaper columns and to his experience as a criminal defense lawyer. Unfortunately, he mentions these facts too many times as he does the titles of the books he has written. One gets weary of reading this each time he reaches a conclusion about something. This habit tended to color my belief in his conclusions about the cases of the assassinations of Kilgallen, JFK and Marilyn Monroe. He does make some interesting points and I would not discount all of his reasoning. An interesting take on these historical happenings.

Sandi
Tha Husbands by Holly Gramazio

4
Very unique premise. But you must let your imagination go and suspend real life for this story because once you enter the 'magic attic' nothing will be the same. It seems husbands - new husbands - pop out of the attic each time a current husband goes up there. (Not a spoiler - detailed in synopsis). So we go along with Lauren on her husband exchange throughout the book. But when does she stop? When is 'this' husband the one?

The Author’s Guide to Murder by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig and Karen White

I’ve read several books from this trio and have loved them. Three authors, posing as best friends, attend an authors retreat in Scotland. Set in an old castle, the elusive Brett Presley is the host but no one sees him. The ladies are shocked when a murder occurs and they put their heads together to find the killer. Family secrets are also discovered.

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Exceptional writing. This book came out May 2014 and I've read it no less than 6 times! Each time I read it, it sparks a different emotion from the last time I read it. The young blind girl in the story is brave, trusting, and fearless. The author writes so well that I can feel and visualize every word! His writing is like looking at a famous painting.

Wow, when you think you already read the best book ever, you find another even better than the best!! I absolutely loved LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY!! I really hope we get another book from this author. It had everything with the strength of women and their equality fight was awesome. You laugh, you cry, you get frustrated, you get angry, sad, and some mystery, too. I really hope you can read it. Thanks to author Jessica Payne's giveaway as a winner I got the pleasure to read this book. I feel very happy and blessed with this book. Enjoy!

The River Knows Your Name by Kelly Mustian

A beautifully-written book but also heartbreaking. Many wonderful women starting with Lottie who raises Becca after her parents die. Becca, a young mother, struggles to keep her daughter safe from many things including her mother-in-law. Hazel is another woman who gives up her dreams when she is young to save a small child. Two little girls confused about their lives. It was a wonderful, touching read.

The finale to the RED QUEEN trilogy is a non-stop thrill ride. It had me emotionally on the edge of my seat from beginning to end and gasping out loud as the twists were revealed. I truly wish this series was not over.

Farthing by Jo Walton

Super interesting novel that seemed to almost switch genres midstream and I really liked it. What starts out as an Agatha Christie-esque mystery in an old English estate turns into an alternate history political thriller. This is a world where the wealthy English have rested power from Churchill and came to a truce with Hitler in WWII. At a family weekend getaway, a murder is committed and there are red herrings a plenty. The story is told from two POVs, one the almost disowned (for marrying a Jew) daughter of English nobles, and the investigating detective. I enjoyed the detective's side much more as Lucy was very whiny to me, but the story overall had a ton of layers and was incredibly sad. The ending was a bit of a crusher.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T. J. Klune

I do not like fantasy, but THE HOUSE IN THE CERULEAN SEA presents an interesting story about an orphanage, friendship, prejudice, and relationships. The story centers on a outrageous orphanage with six special children and their master. A caseworker sent to investigate the surroundings and the individuals and to decide if the orphanage should be closed. The caseworker, Linus Baker, follows rules and lives with a cat in a modest house. Linus has a very uneventful life, but that may change. The special children on the island where the orphanage sits possess special skills. And the master, Arthur Parnassus, baffles Linus. Transformation arrives at the island for the children, Arthur, and Linus.

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES altered my understanding of an octopus and also about animals in general. What a heart-warming story about a seventy-year-old woman and the choices that life presents. Tova Sullivan, the seventy-year-old woman, lives alone in the house that her Swedish father built. Tova’s son and husband are both dead - the son disappeared in the ocean and the husband died from cancer. Tova works part-time as a cleaning lady at a local aquarium. Enter Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus, on the gentle slope to his death. An octopus only lives four years, and Marcellus is almost four. The story brings other interesting characters into the discussion: Cameron, Ethan, Terry, and many other minor characters.

Classic Alice Feeney. Lots of twists! I didn't love the characters, but I don't think they are meant to be loved. Another great thriller!

Focal Point Fiasco by Ruth Baker

Oh, my word! What a delightful book and I don't even like cats! I do love animals, and I was surprised with the killer, who I never thought about, and I loved Carol's cleverness as she snuffed out the killer. I highly recommend this book!!

A Match Made in Spell by ReGina Welling and Erin Lynn

I loved Lexie's story and her wacky fairy godmothers. Between her matching business, her squabbling godmothers and her cat, I wouldn't want to be her!! Now I can't wait to read the next book!!

The Village Library Demon-Hunting Society by C. M. Waggoner

The cover and title caught my attention when I was trolling the library’s shelves. It sounded like it might be a fun, slightly different, kind of cozy mystery. However, it missed the mark for me.
