Devi S. Laskar

Devi S. Laskar is an award-winning writer and poet, as well as a visual artist, photographer, songwriter and former newspaper reporter.

Her debut novel, THE ATLAS OF REDS AND BLUES, explored the intersection of social racism, misogyny and police violence, and won multiple awards, including the Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature. The Washington Post named it one of the 50 Best Books of 2019.

Her second novel, CIRCA, a story of friendship and immigration, was a GOOP Book Club pick. Her third and latest novel, MIDNIGHT, AT THE WAR, is about truth and the news before and after 9/11.

Laskar has published two poetry chapbooks, and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net. Her latest full-length poetry collection is SELF-PORTRAITS EX MACHINA.

She holds degrees from Columbia University, the University of Illinois, and the University of North Carolina. A former journalist, she covered crime, government and general news for newspapers across several states, including NC, IL, HI, GA and FL. Her essays have appeared in Electric Literature, Evergreen Review and USA Today. She is an alumna of both TheOpEdProject and VONA/Voices and is completing a spoken-word album.

Foreign correspondent Rita Das has left New York for the war-torn Middle East, a reassignment she asked for after learning she is pregnant but uncertain if the father is her husband or her lover. As she strives to shed light on the fallouts of the war, Rita finds herself embroiled in her own conflicts with her interpreter and her news editor, her sources and her colleagues. She is unable to accept the loss of her mother and deal with her guilt for not being by her side when she died. As she goes into the field to report on the war, she grapples with the physical and emotional tolls of her pregnant body and a turbulent region. When her news editor delivers urgent orders for her to return to New York, Rita is faced with a choice about how she wants to live her life as a journalist and a soon-to-be mother.
