Biography

Deborah Lee Rose

Deborah's newest nonfiction book, BEAUTY AND THE BEAK: How Science, Technology, and a 3D-Printed Beak Rescued a Bald Eagle, tells the inspiring true story of Beauty, who was shot in the beak and received a pioneering prosthetic beak. Beauty’s story was reported worldwide, and has inspired efforts to help other animals with 3D-printed prosthetics. The book includes information all about bald eagles, their near extinction in the US mainland, and how scientists reintroduced them across the country so they are thriving today. Beauty and the Beak has won the AAAS/Subaru Award, Bank Street College Cook Prize and California Reading Association Eureka! Gold Award.

Deborah’s humorous school story, THE SPELLING BEE BEFORE RECESS, captures the nailbiting excitement of a school spelling bee that goes into overtime. In this fun-filled picture book, set to the rhythm of The Night Before Christmas, two finalists enter the spelling bee's championship round. The spelling words fly fast and thick, until the principal throws in a tiebreaker where the spellers must spell AND tell what the word means --- just like in the national spelling bee.

Her lullaby book, SOMEONE'S SLEEPY, gently celebrates a young child's nightly ritual, from bathtime to hearing a bedtime story to snuggling with favorite stuffed animals to sweet dreams. The book is also a lullaby song with music by Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Tom Chapin.

JIMMY THE JOEY, Deborah's animal conservation book, is the true story of the amazing rescue of an orphaned baby koala in Australia. Deborah is former Director of Communications for Lindsay Wildlife Experience, which includes the first wildlife rehabilitation hospital established in the U.S.

Deborah's ocean alphabet book, INTO THE A, B, SEA, was named to the New York Public Library 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing and has sold a quarter million copies. THE TWELVE DAYS OF KINDERGARTEN and THE TWELVE DAYS OF WINTER have both won the NAPPA Gold Award. An internationally published, award-winning children's author, Deborah weaves themes of nature, family and school in her books.

"I rocked my children to sleep many times. That gentle rocking rhythm became the verses of Someone's Sleepy...THE TWELVE DAYS OF KINDERGARTEN was inspired by my son's first day of kindergarten. When he came home from school, he couldn't stop telling me all the wondrous things his new teacher had given him. Those classroom gifts--and many others that followed--inspired me to write THE TWELVE DAYS OF KINDERGARTEN, THE TWELVE DAYS OF WINTER and THE TWELVE DAYS OF SPRINGTIME. THE SPELLING BEE BEFORE RECESS grew from my memories of LOSING the school spelling bee, and from my kids adventures in their own school bees many years later."

Deborah grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Cornell University. She helped create and directed communications for the national STEM education project howtosmile.org, which has earned an ALA Best Websites for Kids award and AASL Best Websites for Teaching and Learning Award. She lives in the Washington, DC area. Visit her at www.deborahleerose.com.
