Chris Webb
Biography
Chris Webb
As a minister, counselor and the father of three, Chris Webb has experienced firsthand the fundamental significance of family. He began his ministry career as a youth pastor while he was still attending college and spent the next seventeen years in youth and children’s ministry. “In my first full-time position working with youth and children, I realized the importance of family,” Chris recalls. “Who spends more time with the kids? I realized that by ministering to the family, I would be ministering to the kids. After I got married and had kids of my own, I wanted to be the best husband and father that I could be --- but even observing and shepherding other families didn’t completely prepare me for the difficulty of parenting. I felt guilty when I lost my temper, and one of my kids, in particular, could play me like a fiddle.” Even as he devoted his career to helping families, Chris recognized his own need for some parenting help.
Chris had received his undergraduate degree in secondary education from the University of Southern Mississippi and his M.A. in Christian education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Motivated by his passion for helping families, he also earned a second post-graduate degree, an M.S. in counseling psychology with an emphasis in marriage and family therapy, from Mississippi College. While pursuing this second master’s degree, Chris stumbled upon a parenting book by Dr. Thomas Phelan --- 1-2-3 MAGIC: Effective Discipline for Children 2-12. Impressed by the simplicity and inherently biblical principles of this secular book, he began implementing the 1-2-3 method with his own children and recommending it to the families he counseled. After several years of success with the 1-2-3 method, Chris contacted Dr. Phelan, and the two of them collaborated to create the newest edition of the book --- 1-2-3 MAGIC FOR CHRISTIAN PARENTS.
Three years ago Chris accepted a position at First Baptist Church of Jackson, Mississippi, with its congregation of 8,000 members, as the pastor to married adults. Chris is a National Certified Counselor, and he and his wife, Jill, have ten years of experience speaking at marriage conferences in Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama. Chris has also spoken at parenting conferences since 1997. The couple has three children --- Reagan (12), Kennedy (10) and John Walker (7) --- who have been raised on the 1-2-3 method. Chris and Jill truly enjoy spending time developing relationships with their children. The family loves the beach and takes a yearly mission trip together. They are currently involved with a church-planting ministry at Valle Hermosa in Matamoros, Mexico. The Webb family is also an amateur bluegrass band with Chris on guitar, Jill on keyboard and Kennedy playing the fiddle.
