Carol S. Pearson
Dr. Carol S. Pearson, co-author of the Pearson-Marr Archetype Indicator® instrument, is an internationally recognized scholar and well-known author of numerous books, among them the bestselling THE HERO WITHIN (1986) and AWAKENING THE HERO WITHIN (1991). AWAKENING THE HERO WITHIN provided the foundational 12-archetype theory from which the PMAI® assessment was initially developed. Her coauthored books, THE HERO AND THE OUTLAW (2001) with Margaret Marks and MAPPING THE ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHE (2003) with John Corlett, apply the PMAI theory to branding and organizational development, respectively. The workbook, WHAT STORY ARE YOU LIVING? (2007), coauthored with Hugh Marr, built on these theories as they applied to the PMAI system. Dr. Pearson's book, PERSEPHONE RISING: Awakening the Heroine Within (2015), was named a gold medalist in the category of books for women by the Nautilus Book Awards, an annual accolade of books in the genre of social and environmental justice. THE TRANSFORMING LEADER (2012) edited by Dr. Pearson, a collection of cutting-edge essays on the challenges facing leaders in the 21st century, was honored by the University of San Diego School of Leadership and Educational Services for making a significant contribution to the field of leadership.
Dr. Pearson is an author, speaker, workshop leader, and thinking partner with organizations and leaders in private practice. Previously, she was Executive Vice President and Provost and President of Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, CA. Before Pacifica, she served as Executive Director of the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership at the University of Maryland, and a professor in the UMD School of Public Policy. Earlier in her career, she was the Academic Dean of Goucher College, and at various times combined academic administration with teaching, including at the University of Colorado, UMD, and the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies. In her work through CASA: The Center for Archetypal Studies and Applications and later through Meristem, she provided archetypal consulting with organizations across sectors. She also served as the senior editor of The Inner Edge: A Resource for Enlightened Business Practice.
