Alan Tiegreen was born in Boise, Idaho. When he was eight, his dad was transferred by the government. The family moved to several different states over the next few years.

Both music and art interested Alan Tiegreen as he was growing up. By the time he was ready for college, though, he had decided to focus on art. He also studied illustration. Later, he fell in love with the books he and his wife bought for their children, and he began to illustrate children's books. His books have won many honors and awards. He paints, too, and his works are shown in many places.

He and his wife enjoy traveling.
