The Wife Between Us

The Wife Between Us
Richard Thompson is every woman’s dream: mid-30s, handsome and wealthy, a man his wife’s best friend called the Prince, as in Charming. His ex-wife, rather.
Vanessa was once married to him, but she herself will admit she wasn’t a good wife. Now Richard has gotten engaged again. Vanessa didn’t expect that, and it’s something she cannot let happen. She knows her ex-husband will shower his new bride with jewelry, buy her a stunning house in the suburbs and an expensive car, and replace Vanessa with her. She knows this because he did all these things for her once upon a time. Admittedly, Vanessa has some baggage. Years ago, she fled Florida, hoping to reinvent herself in New York City, the best place for a person to disappear. But did her past follow her? Hang-up calls started to plague her, calls where no one talked, just breathed. And she constantly felt eyes on her, felt she was being observed as she walked, felt like someone was always watching.
"Twists, twists and more twists. THE WIFE BETWEEN US will keep readers off balance through the whole story. It may seem obvious what’s going on here. But keep in mind: nothing is obvious in this book."
When they were engaged, Richard called her his nervous Nellie and promised he would take care of her. She would be safe as long as she was with him. And she believed him. Oh, how she wanted to escape into the safety of Richard’s arms. Now, though, he has made those promises to another woman, a woman he left Vanessa for. Vanessa is horrified. She must stop this wedding. She virtually stalks Richard’s fiancé, Emma. She knows where Emma lives and works. Google provides a wealth of information if you just know how to find it, and Vanessa does.
Emma’s apartment building is easy to get into, as is her workplace. And Vanessa looks enough like her replacement that she can sneak around with little fear of being caught. Richard is her greatest obstacle, though. She does not want to run into him. He will undo everything Vanessa has accomplished with Emma. He will explain away all of Vanessa’s warnings. She absolutely must make Emma listen. Vanessa’s replacement must never marry Richard.
But why would Emma listen to a spurned ex-wife? Richard is so kind, so generous, so perfect. He loves her, and Emma is lucky to have him. She has met Vanessa. Toward the end of her marriage, Vanessa let herself go, gained weight, started drinking, became unhinged --- not the sort of woman one takes seriously. Pitiable, really. Emma has tried to be sympathetic, but Vanessa’s barrage of notes and messages, even stopping her on the street, are more than she can stand. The ex-wife is relentless. Can’t she just let go? Richard doesn’t love her anymore. She needs to just move on. They have both told her that, but she keeps trying to get to Emma.
Twists, twists and more twists. THE WIFE BETWEEN US will keep readers off balance through the whole story. It may seem obvious what’s going on here. But keep in mind: nothing is obvious in this book. Vanessa was Richard’s nervous Nellie, the beautiful but skittish young woman he vowed to take care of. But now he’s replacing her with Emma. What was it that Vanessa did to push her handsome husband away? You’ll never guess.
