The Summer Country

Review

The Summer Country

If you love historical fiction, you won’t want to miss THE SUMMER COUNTRY. Lauren Willig takes readers to the heat and sugar cane plantations of Barbados, weaving the stories of families across generations. Ten years of work paid off brilliantly in this book that entertains, challenges and educates.

"...a well-crafted, smartly entwined story that is worthy of your time from the first page to the satisfying conclusion."

I would’ve liked to have drawn a family tree as I read. There is no question that one should not be provided for readers, but it took a little concentration at the start to keep me clear on who was who. In hindsight, I could’ve benefitted from a little scratch sheet for myself. This is in no way a hindrance or a flaw.

THE SUMMER COUNTRY is a well-crafted, smartly entwined story that is worthy of your time from the first page to the satisfying conclusion. Even Willig’s author’s note is compelling.

Willig’s witty voice and poignant style shine throughout the book. With keen observations and nimble writing, she lets readers experience her characters’ emotions, regrets and the range of human feelings.

Not only do I love Willig’s writing, she is an incredible and kind woman who I am privileged to know. And she has good taste. I have the same dress she is wearing in her author photo.
