The Root of All Evil

About the Book

The Root of All Evil

Brash Roman police detective Michele Balistreri grew up in Tripoli in the 1960s, when post-colonial Libya fell prey to the sprawling greed of the West. Young Michele, prone to using his fists instead of his intellect, needs little encouragement to join a gang of Fascistic youth. When he suffers a succession of personal blows --- the death of his mother, an unspeakable horror that befell his best friend's family, and the shame of his father's role in Gaddafi's ascendance to power --- he enters into a youthful blood pact that will corrupt the course of his future.

Two decades later, a dissolute Commissario Balistreri, now living in Rome, escapes his regrets through sex, alcohol and gambling. His sole responsibilities are now a half-hearted investigation into the death of a South American student and a tiresome obligation --- provided in gratitude to the man who saved his career when Balistreri was doing his best to sabotage it --- to protect Claudia Teodori, a television starlet, from the many pitfalls of fame.

As the risks to Claudia begin to mount along with her growing reputation as a star, the sorrows of Balistreri's past begin to intrude into the present. Soon, their fates are inextricably linked, and this driven, obsessive young woman must help this damaged detective fight a foe that has become obsessed with her and refuses to forget him.
