The President's Shadow

Review

The President's Shadow

Brad Meltzer has shown in his hit cable series "Brad Meltzer's Decoded" and "Brad Meltzer's Lost History" that he knows his source material and goes after the truth behind the history we think we know like a pit bull chasing a bone. He does not accept anything at face value and is fired up about uncovering conspiracies, shining a light on the truth and chasing down injustice around every corner of the globe.

His latest novel, THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW, operates by this very same theme. It is the third installment in his Culper Ring series featuring a most unlikely protagonist in national archivist Beecher White. This time, Beecher is tasked with doing more than just following the trail of clues he uncovers in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

"THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW is a must-read for those who seek to dig deeper into the often untold history that our great country is founded on and the unsung heroes who will stop at nothing to protect it."

When a human arm is found buried in the Rose Garden of the White House, a clear message is sent to the President and his Secret Service team. A killer, apparently marking the President and his family as targets, has proven that he can get in and out of the highly secure White House at will. Ironically, one of the President's biggest political adversaries has been Beecher White. What a surprise it will be to Beecher when President Wallace calls on him to represent the Culper Ring and protect the Presidency in much the same way the original Ring protected George Washington during the Revolutionary War.

The prologue tells us that every President has secrets. So does every First Lady. What Beecher will need to determine is if one of these old secrets is enough to kill for. What frightens Beecher --- and sends him on the chase --- is the item found buried with the arm: a pin bearing a unique symbol that was worn by a Secret Service member the day President Reagan was shot. Suspicion points to known suspects who have attempted to assassinate the President, the most notorious being the man known as Nico. More personal for Beecher is the fact that Nico was once part of the same group of U.S. soldiers known as the Plankholders that included his own father. The symbol on the pin points to this historical group of men.

THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW moves back and forth in history, highlighting both current circumstances and the history involving Beecher's father, Nico, and those with whom they shared an infamous fate. The present-day thrills include clues leading to a new suspect, a deadly killer known as Ezra. Was Ezra the one who broke into the White House, or does he have a more nefarious agenda in mind --- one involving a group known as the Golden Circle?

In his first thriller in nearly 2 ½ years, Brad Meltzer pulls out all the stops in a novel that will have your head spinning with U.S. history and conspiracy theories. For fans of the series and his aforementioned cable shows, Meltzer does not disappoint. THE PRESIDENT'S SHADOW is a must-read for those who seek to dig deeper into the often untold history that our great country is founded on and the unsung heroes who will stop at nothing to protect it.
