The Last Second: A Brit in the FBI Thriller
Catherine Coulter and J.T. Ellison continue their popular A Brit in the FBI series with THE LAST SECOND. This latest installment finds the husband-and-wife team of Nicholas Drummond and Michaela Caine trying to figure out how to stop a nuclear explosion in outer space, an event that could have catastrophic consequences.
Dr. Nevaeh Patel, a former astronaut, works for and is in charge of Galactus, a private agency that builds rockets and helps companies launch their satellites into orbit. Patel spent some time in the International Space Station on her last mission to space. It is during this mission that she participated in a space walk in which she nearly died after starting to float away from the station. She was able to get back safely, but claimed that she had been helped by unseen aliens who called themselves the Numen. The Numen helped her return to the station in exchange for her helping them come to earth so they could bring peace to our planet.
"[T]he story is filled with intriguing main plots and subplots, all of which help to move the narrative along and keep readers on edge as they quickly turn the pages to see what happens next."
Patel spent months trying to convince people that she really had been in contact with space aliens. Of course, everyone thought she was delusional. She was put on permanent leave from NASA and was unable to go back into space. As a result, she went to work for Galactus, where she came up with a scheme to destroy a large number of satellites in space so she could open up the way for the Numen to come to earth to help her save everyone. When the FBI finds out about the plot, special agents Drummond and Caine are sent to find a way to thwart this nuclear explosion before it’s too late.
As usual, the story is filled with intriguing main plots and subplots, all of which help to move the narrative along and keep readers on edge as they quickly turn the pages to see what happens next. If you’re a fan of the series, you won’t want to miss this sixth entry. Although Coulter and Ellison don’t include a whole lot of back story to help you figure out the relationships among the main characters, newcomers will still enjoy THE LAST SECOND and will be eager to catch up on the previous volumes.
