The Last Night in London

Review

The Last Night in London

In 1939, London is full of laughter and excitement for Eva Harlow and Precious Dubose. Ambitious women who love beautiful things, they model in hopes of one day leading the glamorous lives that they can only dream about. Aware that things can change in a second, Eva and Precious still enjoy every minute thanks to their drive to reinvent themselves.

When one modeling appointment brings Graham St. John into Eva’s life, she cannot believe her luck. Graham is kind, handsome and wealthy, and he is just as interested in Eva as she is in him. With Germany waging war across the English Channel, every day brings a new uncertainty. Like everyone else in London, Eva and Precious worry about the impending war, but they try to stay focused on the lighter things in life, like beautiful clothes and love.

"THE LAST NIGHT IN LONDON is heartbreaking and full of laughter, with a little mystery thrown in for good measure, which will keep you guessing until the very end."

In 2019, freelance journalist Maddie Warner lands in London, knowing that her assigned story about Precious, a family member, is going to be an interesting one. She also gets reacquainted with an old college friend who could have been more than a friend had it not been for her inability to commit. Since the death of her mother, Maddie has done her best to keep everyone at a distance emotionally, holding her grief in front of her like a shield. However, when she meets Precious, that shield begins to fall.

While Maddie is supposed to be writing about Precious’ life in London before the war, she finds herself unraveling a mystery surrounding Eva that has the potential to change the lives of the people she has come to care about.

THE LAST NIGHT IN LONDON jumps back and forth between Eva’s world in the early 1940s and Maddie’s in2019. Eva and Maddie are afraid to share their pasts, worried that once their secrets are revealed, it will change the way their loved ones perceive them. Those secrets entail both women making decisions that affect others in ways they never imagined.

I love stories that jump between timeframes. There is something so wonderful about being able to experience two parallel stories and see them converge in the end. In THE LAST NIGHT IN LONDON, three strong, amazing women all find out that reinventing themselves is possible. The ghosts that haunt them also allow them to transform, letting them hold onto their pasts while moving into the future, understanding that their secrets do not make them unlovable.

If you enjoyed Karen White’s novels set in Walton, Georgia, you will want to add this one to your library as well. She has a way of intertwining the stories of her characters that makes putting the book down impossible. THE LAST NIGHT IN LONDON is heartbreaking and full of laughter, with a little mystery thrown in for good measure, which will keep you guessing until the very end.
