Every so often a resource comes along that provides a much-needed perspective on the Bible. It tends to be simple and straightforward, leaving us to wonder, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

In THE GREATEST WORDS EVER SPOKEN, author Steven K. Scott examines nearly 2,000 statements of Jesus and organizes them according to topic. The result is an easy-to-use reference to answer the question WWJS? (What Would Jesus Say?) to everyday issues. Its brilliance comes in its simple purpose. All too often, with countless debates and opinions being exchanged, issues can get muddled down and murky. This book provides a quick way to find out what Jesus said about the topic.

Scott writes, “Jesus’ greatest promises were made to those who will hear His words and do them. His words will provide abundant light and perfect wisdom for any decision you face and all the power you will need to overcome any adversity. But the promises He makes the power He offers will never be known by those who refuse to Hear His words.”

Using the New International Version (NIV), Scott divides the book into nine sections. He examines such topics as what Christ tells us about Himself, what Christ tells us about His Father in heaven, as well as the greatest words ever spoken about the Holy Spirit, eternity and humanity. In one section he specifically examines “The Greatest Words Ever Spoken About How to Know God.” Individual topics within the section include accepting and receiving Christ, coming to Christ, fearing God, and repentance.

Reading through each section leads to many surprises --- both by what is said and what is left unsaid. While some scholars will disagree with some of the classifications of scripture as well as omissions, the book is a great launching point for determining what Jesus had to say. Each section begins with verses from the Gospel of John and then proceed to verses from the rest of the Gospels and occasionally Acts, 1 or 2 Corinthians and Revelation. Scott says he did this because John’s Gospel is “more direct and more intimate.” The order seems to work well for readings.

THE GREATEST WORDS EVER SPOKEN isn’t designed to be read in a few days or weeks; rather it’s a life-long resource. It can be used as a quick reference or for topical studies. Scott writes, “Individuals, couples, and families can select topics to study during morning or evening devotions, in-depth individual Bible studies or group Bible studies.” He encourages readers to go through the table of contents and place a check by topics of interest.
