The Great Husband Hunt

Review

The Great Husband Hunt

When you observe people on the street or in a public establishment, do you ever wonder who they are, what they do for a living, and where they are going? Do you sometimes wish you were a fly on the wall when a couple is having an argument, eagerly waiting for what will happen next? If so, then THE GREAT HUSBAND HUNT is the book for you.

This is a tale of life and love in a closed society with its own reign of social rules and etiquette. The entire book passes through a period of 70 years, touching on magical and tragic moments throughout history: the sinking of the Titanic, two world wars, Nazism and women's rights, to name a few.

Poppy Minkel is the central character --- the steadfast, headstrong and stubborn heroine. She stands up for her values in a society that restricts women and their opinions, preferring the females to sit quietly in a corner with their handkerchiefs neatly folded. We follow her life, loves and tribulations from childhood to adolescence to mature woman. Through her eyes we see how society, family and the social environment at the time affect her and all those around her. Though Poppy steals the limelight, there are many other engaging characters, but to mention each and every one could well turn this review into a book. The family tree at the beginning of the novel will prove to be quite useful while reading.

As you walk with Poppy through her life, you will suddenly find yourself caught up in her humor, thoughts and decisions. You will read of an array of births, deaths, marriages and divorces. You will follow Poppy through her travels from the U.S. to England and back and forth. Never have I traveled so much as I did while reading this book. You will find yourself totally immersed in Poppy's life as if you've known her for years.

This is the first time I have read a book by Laurie Graham, and I found her writing and storytelling to be a joy. I became so involved with her characters that I did not want the story to end. So if you are like me --- a people person, an eagerly awaiting "fly on the wall" --- then why not allow Poppy Minkel to whisk you away on her fantastic journey through life!
