I have been there from the very beginning with Jeffery Deaver. I’m talking about the many novels he wrote prior to his celebrated Lincoln Rhyme series that made him one of the most respected thriller writers in the business. THE FINAL TWIST is already the third installment in his latest series featuring the incredibly unique antihero, Colter Shaw.

If you asked Shaw to describe himself, he would probably say that he is a problem solver. He has built a life around seeking out jobs that involve rewards, not all of them above board. In this book we finally learn about the family history that made him this way. He is the son of Ashton Shaw, who was somewhat of a legend in his time and left behind several unsolved mysteries that he is now determined to solve.

In THE FINAL TWIST, Shaw dedicates himself to locating the one treasure that eluded Ashton --- though he has no idea what it is. When he was just 16, he found his father dead in desolate Echo Ridge. He has always held the nefarious group BlackBridge responsible for the murder. Those he has targeted include BlackBridge CEO Ian Helms; Ebbitt Droon, the company “facilitator” and vicious hit man; and Crema Braxton, an older but extremely dangerous woman. These individuals are just as interested in stopping Shaw as they were in shutting down his father.

It's not long before Shaw realizes that he can’t handle this task alone and finds help from an unlikely source: his older brother, Russell, who comes from a more paramilitary background and has a team equipped and ready to help. They tag-team on the mission to discover their father’s treasure, while Shaw continues to pick up reward assignments.

Once together, Shaw and Russell spend time in their father’s various safe houses around the San Francisco area, all while being pursued by the BlackBridge trio and their army of cronies. They learn that a family has been abducted and will be slaughtered if the treasure they are looking for is not found and handed over. Its revelation turns the novel into something akin to a Dan Brown story as ancient California history may rise up and have an incredible impact on the present and future of the entire state.

Deaver knows how to plot a thriller, and THE FINAL TWIST is no exception. Readers will be guessing right through to the ending, which is a satisfying one for the dynamic Shaw family while also leaving the door wide open for more adventures in the near future.
