The Divorce Papers

When Mia Durkheim's husband serves her with divorce papers while she's dining at a trendy local restaurant, it begins a chain of events that turns her life upside down. Mia is not the only one affected by this legal action and public embarrassment, though. The woman she chooses as her representative, attorney Sophie Diehl, also finds her life altered by the case.

Maria "Mia" Meiklejohn Durkheim has spent the last 16 years of her life as the wife of Dr. Daniel Durkheim, a shining star in the medical field of oncology. While she previously enjoyed the financial prosperity and social perks that accompany being the wife of a prominent physician, all of that is about to change. What she has to do now is fight for her rights and those of her 10-year-old daughter, Jane. She'll be damned if she's going to let Dr. Durkheim leave her and Jane penniless and abandoned.

"THE DIVORCE PAPERS is a fun, riveting and rollicking read that will make you wonder what first-time author Susan Rieger has up her sleeve next."

Mia responds to the receipt of the divorce papers by consulting with Sophie, a criminal law associate with the prestigious New England firm Traynor, Hand, Wyzanski. While Sophie was promised that she's only meeting with Mia to perform an intake assessment of her situation in the absence of the firm's eminent divorce attorneys, she suddenly finds herself permanently assigned to Mia's case when Mia takes an instant liking to her. To say that Sophie is unhappy with the development is an understatement.

Not only does representing Mia force Sophie completely out of her comfort zone, it puts her directly in the line of fire from fellow attorney Fiona McGregor. Fiona is offended that Sophie has been chosen for such a prominent divorce case, one that Fiona feels was rightly hers. What she doesn't know is that Sophie would gladly hand the case over to Fiona immediately, if only she could.

As the case progresses, the personalities and personal and professional lives of both Mia and Sophie are revealed through the correspondence and other documents that make up the entirety of THE DIVORCE PAPERS. Emails, memorandums, letters, cards and other paperwork pile up page after page to tell the story of these two women whose paths have crossed in a seemingly random manner. While Mia's marriage is ending, Sophie is eager to find a man with whom she can begin a relationship. While Mia is in her early 40s, Sophie is quickly approaching her 30th birthday. In spite of their differences, both women will find themselves coming out stronger and smarter on the other side of the Durkheim divorce.

THE DIVORCE PAPERS is a witty tale of one woman's divorce and another's professional progress as they transform into the women they were always meant to be. The unusual format of the book expressed as a series of personal and professional documents reads as if the reader has been given access to the most intimate papers contained in the entirety of the Durkheim divorce file. THE DIVORCE PAPERS is a fun, riveting and rollicking read that will make you wonder what first-time author Susan Rieger has up her sleeve next.
