The Bachelorette Party

Review

The Bachelorette Party

For several years, four friends met at a remote island off the coast of Sweden. Tilly, Anna, Linnea and Evelina last upheld this annual tradition 10 years ago. For some unknown reason, they would never be seen alive again.

Thus begins Camilla Sten’s latest novel, THE BACHELORETTE PARTY. In 2022, a small group of friends, including a bride-to-be, head off to Baltic Vinyasa, a yoga retreat on the same island where the four women disappeared. One of them, Tessa Nilsson, is a down-on-her-luck podcaster who sees an opportunity to revive her true-crime reporting by looking into the case now known as the "Nacka Four." The other interesting figure here is Irene Sperling, the owner of the retreat, who has a personal connection to the mysterious events of 2012.

"There is much to savor in THE BACHELORETTE PARTY. Sten blends elements of mystery, suspense and horror into a narrative web that constantly has readers off-guard and guessing what actually is at play in this claustrophobic thriller."

With any luck, Tessa will be successful with her new podcast, which she names “The Bachelorette Party.” The bride-to-be, Anneliese, isn’t privy to Tessa’s plans, and neither are the other members of the bridal party: Caroline, Lena (Tessa's sister), Natalie and Mikaela. The only interactions the ladies have on the island are with Irene and a man named Adam, who handles multiple roles at the resort.

Nothing seems too suspicious until the group unexpectedly receives a note from Caroline indicating that she had to leave the island and head home. This cannot be verified with their limited Wi-Fi service, and it would not have been a major concern had Tessa not found Caroline’s bloodied body, with a slit across her throat and a knife sticking from her eye.

Sheer panic overtakes the remaining women as they begin to point fingers and come up with possible suspects. Talk of a serial killer at large, possibly the same person who offed the Nacka Four, consumes the party, and they hope to survive long enough to catch the next boat back to the mainland.
