Tell Me What You Did
“Tell Me What You Did” is the name of a wildly popular podcast, and each episode launches with those five words. The host, Poe Webb, invites “guests” to publicly confess whatever they want. Well, mostly whatever they want. She does have some rules, like she won’t talk to sexual predators, animal abusers and a few other line-crossers. Murderers, though, are welcome. Not that she gets many of those. Her guests have 15 minutes to unburden themselves to the world. They can give their real name or not; it’s up to them. However, there’s no guarantee what happens after that as the police may be listening.
"Carter Wilson boggles the minds of his readers with twisty plots and impossible scenarios for his characters to handle. Everything he writes is an adrenaline rush. TELL ME WHAT YOU DID is one of his best books."
Over the years of its existence, “Tell Me What You Did” has become the top-ranked true crime podcast nationally. Poe and her producer/boyfriend, Kip, run it out of her home, a somewhat remote place outside of town. She lives there with her beloved dog, Bailey, and often Kip. They have what most would consider a dream setup. But Kip feels like Poe is holding back and not being completely forthcoming. He’s about to discover he’s right when one guest turns the tables on them --- and he may be their last guest ever.
A man calling himself Ian Hindley says that he killed Poe’s mother years ago. Why would he do that? And why come forward now? Poe knows he’s lying because she was there when her mother was murdered. True, she was just a little girl, but she’s certain that Hindley isn’t the man she saw. Besides, the killer’s name was Leopold Hutchins. But he insists on telling his story and claims to know what happened in New York.
This throws Poe into a panic. No one but herself knows about New York. He can’t possibly know anything about it. But he does. And now he demands to do a live interview with Poe. He wants her to tell everyone what she did. Well, of course, she refuses. She's never told anyone, and she's not about to do so now. Her father doesn’t even know she witnessed her mother’s death. Why would she talk about it with this man? As to what she did in New York, there’s no way she'll talk about that. However, Hindley has some leverage. It seems that Poe can’t refuse.
The mess she finds herself in causes massive friction between herself and Kip. He's totally in the dark about her past, and now he feels that he can’t trust this woman he loves and who claims to love him. Will they even be able to stay together? If she can’t trust him enough to come clean, he doesn’t think so. For her part, Poe believes that exposing her secrets is too risky. It turns out she’s right.
To say more would be to say too much. Just understand that Ian Hindley isn’t who he appears to be, but he’s still a nightmare. Poe has a lot to lose and many loved ones to keep safe. Can she protect them all and do so in a blinding snowstorm? Moreover, can she forgive herself? The situation seems hopeless.
Carter Wilson boggles the minds of his readers with twisty plots and impossible scenarios for his characters to handle. Everything he writes is an adrenaline rush. TELL ME WHAT YOU DID is one of his best books. It gets the heart racing and never lets up.
