Served Him Right

Award-winning author Lisa Unger has made a name for herself producing psychological thrillers with well-plotted twists and complex characters who often harbor dark secrets. All of this is expertly on display in her latest novel, SERVED HIM RIGHT.

The prologue features Jessica, whose boss has a reputation for behaving inappropriately with his female staff. What seems like a normal evening working overtime with Paul on a project ends with Jessica waking up in her vehicle with no recollection of how she got there and in a state of undress that leads to certain conclusions. This will make more sense as the story unfolds.

"[SERVED HIM RIGHT] is a complex tale where secrets abound at every turn and justified vengeance is presented in an incredibly unique way."

SERVED HIM RIGHT is told from the perspectives of several characters. During an early chapter from Vera’s point of view, we witness a party being thrown by her sister, Ana Blacksmith, which involves some of their closest friends. Ana refers to the gathering as an ex-orcism, where they will share stories and roast Ana’s hated ex-boyfriend, Paul. The fun and odd whimsy of the occasion is broken when Detective Timothy Bandeau arrives to notify them that Paul’s body was found buried in the dirt by some hikers off a mountain trail.

Everyone is shocked, even though Vera would not put it past Ana to have played a part in Paul’s death. We read as Vera recalls Aunt Agnes, who helped raise her and Ana following the deaths of their parents. There are also flashback chapters featuring Agnes, a mysterious figure who appears to be much more than a relative taking care of two young girls. She eventually will expose Vera and Ana to a world unlike the one they inhabited, where women have the power and ability to take revenge against men who seek to do them harm. I will not reveal anything further as it would spoil the direction the book takes.

What I can tell you is that Ana and Vera come from a long line of secret keepers, women who do bad things for the right reasons (and sometimes not). The book will shine a light on Paul and allow readers to determine if the ends justify the means. In the meantime, we learn much more, layer by layer, about the practice known as The Knowledge and the significant role it plays in what happened to Paul.

SERVED HIM RIGHT will test your moral compass as it raises questions about achieving justice at any cost. You need to continue turning the pages to have all the information you need to formulate what you feel are satisfactory answers. The result is a complex tale where secrets abound at every turn and justified vengeance is presented in an incredibly unique way.
