My Three Dogs

Review

My Three Dogs

Riggs, a small Aussie, and his Jack Russell buddy, Luna, are contentedly living with their humans, Liam and Sabrina. Although Sabrina is a more recent addition to the family, Luna follows her around like a lovesick puppy. But Riggs knows that Liam is the one who keeps them all together. Then one day, Liam upsets the household peace when he brings home Archie, a six-month-old Labradoodle who has no manners or any sense of etiquette. Begrudgingly, Riggs takes on the task of teaching this unruly newcomer how to behave and tries to help him become part of their pack.

"Anyone who has ever loved a dog --- any pet, really --- will feel a tug at their heart as they turn the pages of MY THREE DOGS."

All is humming along until suddenly Sabrina goes to live somewhere else, causing another wave of unsettling emotions in their house. Well, Riggs tells himself, they still have Liam. That is, until one night Liam doesn’t come home either. Archie is the least puzzled by this. He’s seen it before. Humans have a way of disappointing dogs. That’s just the way it is. In Archie’s short life, this isn’t the first time it’s happened. But Riggs and Luna have never experienced this sort of desertion. So what now?

Finally, someone the three dogs know comes to rescue them. However, it isn’t Sabrina or Liam, and this person doesn’t bring them home. Instead, he takes them to a big house with lots of other dogs, where they hang out, waiting for their humans to get them. But they wait in vain. Before too long, Archie leaves with a new family. And as much as she tries to discourage people from liking her, a couple takes Luna home as well.

That leaves Riggs with the task of putting the pack back together. He knows that once he does that, they can go find Liam and make things right again. But it’s not as easy as Riggs thought. Life on the streets of Denver is hard and often can be cruel. It turns out that not all people like dogs. Some even have bad intent towards them. And very few give food to animals roaming free. So a dog can get very hungry out there. But Riggs has to find a way to survive. Through every obstacle in his path, he must track down Liam.

Anyone who has ever loved a dog --- any pet, really --- will feel a tug at their heart as they turn the pages of MY THREE DOGS. We all know the daily guilt of leaving home as those beseeching eyes watch us drive away. So in this story, the night Liam doesn’t come home, readers will be itching to explain to Riggs, Luna and Archie why. Instead, they just have to sit back and read on, continue the journey with the three dogs, and wait to find out what happens. Will it be a happy ending or not? With W. Bruce Cameron in control of the tale, it’s your guess. If he writes it, I’ll read it. It’s always that good.
