My Name Is Resolute

Nancy E. Turner is the author of the award-winning THESE IS MY WORDS, SARAH’S QUILT and THE STAR GARDEN, bestselling novels about the American frontier. In MY NAME IS RESOLUTE, Turner wields her storytelling magic to bring us the saga of a young girl coming of age during Colonial times.

Resolute Talbot is the British-born daughter of a Lord whose family has been sent for political reasons to administer a Jamaican plantation in the English-owned Indies of the early 1700s. Piracy and privateering were highly profitable occupations on the Caribbean, but the family felt safe from their threat behind their fortified walls. Resolute, her older sister Patience and brother August live a privileged existence until Saracen pirates raid their island home, murder their parents, and kidnap them to be sold into servitude. Resolute and Patience barely survive as they are held captive in the hold of the pirate ship.

"Nancy E. Turner is a master storyteller who steeps this page-turning saga in well-researched history of the 18th century."

When that ship is hijacked by a British privateer, August joins them to save his sisters’ lives, but the girls are sold to pilgrim pioneers to serve as house slaves in a small outpost in the wilderness of northern America. The two manage to stay together even after ending up in a Quebec convent, where Resolute learns to weave. She and Patience finally escape from the convent and change their identities but become separated. Resolute, now 15, must find her way on her own.

From the life Resolute expected as a well-brought-up and educated young girl, she must learn the hard way that, in order to survive, she must lie, cheat and steal her way to freedom. She meets and marries a rustic Scots woodsman who is wanted in England and lives a double life after escaping Scotland following the infamous Battle of Culloden. They start a family in the rustic community near Boston that will become Lexington and are respected citizens, although they live in constant fear of being discovered.

Resolute’s apprenticeship as a weaver helps her and her children survive to become a force when the new Americans must take sides against England as revolution looms on the horizon.

Nancy E. Turner is a master storyteller who steeps this page-turning saga in well-researched history of the 18th century. The amalgam of races, religions, bravery and sheer will that makes up the roots of the new Americans is chronicled in this engrossing adventure tale.
